If your are a 5 hcp looking for new irons, what do you buy?

Not sure I’m ready to take the plung, but I’m a 5 hcp thinking about new irons. What do you like and why?

Ping Blueprints or G410s. Ping has the best irons. Either step it up or keep the hacker clubs.

Edit: what type of irons do you play now?

ping i25 or ie1 are solid and can be found cheap

Get fit. Find what works... I never thought I’d be playing mizuno irons, but love my single hot metal pro.

Titleist AP2’s - best combination of playability and forgiveness

Mizuno 919 Tour - Another great Mizuno forging.

Ping Blueprint - hit these today. Only wish I were good enough to game these Great feeling forging.

I always thought I’d buy a set of Mizunos after my Bridgestones but I tried the new Apex Pro and they are sweet.

At a 5 hc, or any other hc, play what you want.

Its your money, its your game, you should have a good idea what works and what you would play best with.

Pretty much my top picks in order unless you're specifically looking for an extreme players or extreme game improvement iron. That's pretty much the list of my favorite middle of the road clubs that have looks but some help to appeal to better players.

I'm a mid to high single digit and I played P790s last year and have the CF19 Apex for this year.

PXG Gen 2 0311P, very forgiving and great feel. Not to mention best looking iron out there, to ME.

What do you currently play? That might help answer the question.....

I’m a 2.5, and just switched from traditional players cavity backs which I have always played, to the new Callaway apex 19’s. I hit my irons very low with in insane amount of spin (don’t ask me how that’s even possibly, I have no clue). The new apex’s fixed all that and gave me almost 2 full clubs gained in distance. They are also very compact looking for what they are.

I play Mizuno MX200’s now, but I have always thought they were a tad big. That said, maybe that’s why I score okay for a weekend golfer. I thinking about the Srixon 785’s, the 919f or the AP2’s. I’m scheduled for a fitting in a few days. It will be fun to see what I like, what the data says, and what the fitter thinks.

Just about any of Mizuno's forged player CB's. Currently, I'd choose JPX 919 Tours if I wanted a new set, but am plenty happy with my MP-62s I've played for over 10 years now.

Srixon Z785. I've had many sets of irons in the past decade - like 100. Seriously. These are All Stars. No weakness that I can discern.

There is a lot of love for apex pro 19, and rightfully so. However, the top 3 that I thought performed really well and felt great were x forged, z785 and ap2. It all comes down to looks, shaft options and preferred feel. 718 ap2 are probably the best version of them to date. X forged and z785 I thought felt the best and also have great shaft options. Just my 2 pennies worth...

Another vote for the Srixon Z785s! They feel amazing and distance control is on point. You could even combo with the Z forged blades. Definitely try the PING blueprints too, best looking irons on the market rn imo. Wish I was good enough to play them!

My Mizuno JPX 919 Tours are my favorite irons I have ever owned. Can hit them high or low, draw or fade, easier to flight than most and the feel of Mizuno forged irons is second to no one.

Whatever suits your eye and game.

If I had to get a new set of irons and my lottery numbers haven't come up to get me a set of P7-TW's, I'd be looking at a set of 718 MB, maybe blended with 718 CB in the long irons if I wasn't feeling up to the full bag of blades.

The Apex '19 are pretty impressive. Long, high and very forgiving. I switched from the Apex Pros and am quite surprised at how good the Apex are. They really make my off-center hits very playable, finding the green on swings that wouldn't have done so with my Apex Pros.

Play the most forgiving iron that you can stand the look of.

I've played just about every iron in Titleist's lineup. Ap1, Ap2, MB, CB... and all are great, but this year I switched to Mizuno JPX 919 Tours and picked up at least an extra club of distance and improved accuracy over my Titleist CB's. Couldn't be happier with this purchase.

I bought a new set of Mizuno MP-54s over the winter for next to nothing compared to newer iron prices. The difference between this set that's roughly 5 years old technology-wise and the current equipment is next to nothing as far as performance for me.

being a 5, you should have a decent, repeatable swing, so go get fit, try anything that suits your eye, no one 'best' iron for everyone

I'm basically in the same boat as you, I'm about a 4.5 right now but I'm considering getting a new set at some point in the near future. As someone who has never been fitted for clubs before, that will 100% be my first move. Trying to find someone reputable around my area now and I'm going to schedule a fitting. I'm kind of hesitant to try out a Golf Tec or Golf Galaxy fitting, but if they're the best around that's probably what I would go with.
