My bag is NOT set for 2020 - silly season of buying and testing

Well, here we are again. Deep into another silly season with new equipment releases, and less golf for those in colder climates. What improvements or changes are you planning for your bag in the off season? Please note, I am expecting @Dan Drake to post his "My bag is set" thread separately. This is not that thread...
I have two main bags in different locations. I am staying with Srixon 565's in both for consistency. That leaves me with 4 drivers to narrow down to 2 (910 D2, Epic, Fusion, and Original One). Also will work on a gap wedge test. Finally, I will work on finding the most consistent club and gaps for my less played bag. This is evaluating (2) 5 woods, a 19* hybrid, and a 7 wood. Hopefully a few range sessions will help to narrow down these options quickly. I love buying, and tinkering with older equipment.
2018/2019 silly season - driver, putter carousel, and building the 2nd set of 565's
2017/2018 silly season - driver, 4 & 5 woods, and wedges
It is exciting to see improvements that I have made in fitting and building clubs with research on this forum.

Replaced my wedges to Clevelands and I'm tinkering with replacing my M4 with a F9, but my first hits in the bay with it did not even get close to where I am with the M4.

Β

Wife has put an absolute stop to any more new clubs as I replaced my entire bag this calendar year.

I'm with you. Conditions have started to get sketchy following some good rains here in CA, so there's not much point in trying to lay down good scores. So, I'm doing some "handicap maintenance" (a-la the CPG ;-), trying out a couple of new sets to see if anything can boot the PXGs. Definitely on the putter carousel, as well. Hoping to get everything resolved by the end of Feb/middle of March.

You know, since I stopped tinkering religously, I'm much happier in general. A lot less "but what if I try this!!" to try and solve whatever made up problem I think I have. Less anxiety around my game.

My plans are to get a fitting for my wedges and putter at the end of this month and just buy whatever I'm fit into... no 2nd guessing, no "experimenting" afterwards (unless the build feels reallllyyy off come spring). I plan to kee my driver, 3w, hybrid and irons exactly how they are right now. Nothing come out for equipment will be game changing, despite what OEMs say. I plan to spend almost all my "golf money" on lessons and playing a couple really nice courses before my baby is born in July. No real sense of tinkering too much when I'm about to probably go from playing and practicing daily to almost never.

That is what I have been trending towards as well. I have become comfortable with certain clubs, and then I stop looking at other options. Trying to make each club a perfect club like Howard suggests is my goal. I am starting a family as well, so "times will be a changin'"!

I am waiting for the Nippon GOST to be available to try it in my Cobra 3U.

Depending on how that goes I may replace it with a TM UDI.

Even though I don't need it, I might end up with a Cobra SZ.

I think the bag is set. Waiting to see what Cameron comes out with to put one in the bag next season. Other than that, unless PING can figure out how to put the hydropearl finish on a stealth Glide 3.0.

Jury's still out on the 19Β° TS2 hybrid I've been gaming for a bit. I really, really liked the Titleist U500 but I HAVE been hitting the hybrid right nice. This is the only thing I'm kinda considering at the moment.

This is, of course, subject to change.

Right now, the only thing that is set is the following:

3 Wood - King Cobra F7 Baffler BLUE

Utility - Cobra One Length in 2 Iron Loft ( 19*)

Cobra Tour Forged One Length (4-PW) - Not set on the shafts yet. Still want to go back to C-Tapers or X-100s.

50 and 54 SM7

60 Hi-toe but will probably try and find a new head as my grooves are pretty beat

Β

I'm up in the air on the following:

Driver - Currently M6 with Evenflow White 65 X-Stiff - Big fan of this club. I don't know if I can state that enough but, there is always room for a re-fit and improvement.

Putter - Currently have TEI3 from '98 with a Psychedelic Matador Grip. Has a lot of rolls on it and a lot of love invested in it but, I'm down to experiment.

Β

Ball: We will see what comes up and is released this year. Currently play BXS from Bridgestone and am a HUGE fan. I don't think this counts on a bag set thing.

Heading out at lunchtime today for a fitting with the T100’s...once that I am good to go...well perhaps after a new sand wedge is considered, oh and possibly a change of loft on the chief as well.

I was pretty good in terms of equiptment changes this year, but I feel Silly Season taking it's hold on me. I just picked up a set of S55's and then had a dream last night that John Daly had a Kiosk at the mall selling a new line of JD forged blades and I stopped by to talk to him about my new set of irons I was getting ready to build........

Amen. Especially for me... most of loss of strokes come from around the green and putting anyway so it's not like getting in a new 3w shaft is going to make one ounce of difference to my scores long term. All I need to do is dial in the right wedge combo and putter and I should be set for a long while. I think this will make improving a lot better because I Can stop trying to focus on what clubs I have and focus more on form.

Like you, I like to tinker. However, I am going to put together a backup bag ... not necessarily because I need it... I just want it. The purpose is two-fold. One, it allows me to do on-course comparisons, and second, if one stops working, I can go to the other as I see fit.

I currently have one bag and there are a couple of replacements in line for next season.

Driver - currently playing the Rogue Draw. It seems to work most of the time, but it does seem to be inconsistent for me. Will do a fitting at Club Champion and see if I can find something that might deliver a few more yards and a little more consistency.

3w - currently Epic Flash and it is really my "trouble" club. Just doesn't seem to work for me so I'm pulling it from the bag.

4h - currently Rogue X. Works pretty good but will upgrade to the new Super Hybrid from Callaway. Probably both a 4h and 5h.

5i - PW - currently Apex CF19's. I like them most of the time, but the long irons can be inconsistent. Probably remove the 5i and use the 5h mentioned previously.

48* and 54* - currently Callaway MD5. Solid clubs and real performers for me.

Putter - Stroke Lab One. I have sunk more 1-putts with the club than any other. Seldom do I have a 3-putt so there will be no changes to this club other than a new grip.

Β

2nd bag:

Driver - probably move the Rogue Draw to this bag when I get a replacement driver.

Woods - 5w but no idea which one yet.

Hybrids - 4h and 5h... again no idea yet.

Irons - Srixon 565 or Honma XP-1 (I've had some practice swings with these and they feel great.)

Wedges - 50 & 56 but again no idea which ones

Putter - Probably another Stroke Lab One

It's going to be a busy off season trying to fill in the gaps and make adjustments, but it's a fun time for me. I have a Skytrak at home that will allow me to find suitable replacements.

I’ve got absolutely nothing figured out. The one thing I’m confident in is that I’m moving away from the jpx 900 t’s in 2020.

I have ordered Mizuno hmb/mmc/t20 5-p from GGE with S+ $-tapers, so I will put those head to head with the p760’s to determine starter vs. bullpen set. It looks like I will for sure play a u85 4 iron. Just bought sm7 50* and 54* so I’ll likely play those with a glide 3 61*.

Driver- z785, g400lst, m5, original one. I have all four so maybe one will work or will I be sucked in for a new one?

Β

3w- i hit both g410 and m5 terribly this year. Why do I even bother?

putter- whatever. I can’t putt for beans.

As you can see from my discussion about High Handicap bag set up that's still active I am not set for next year. Driver and 5-PW and putter are staying the same. I'm currently trying to sell my 3 wood and hybrids with plans of replacing them with a 4 hybrid that fits me better and a 5 would in the 18-19 degree range. I think my 52 will remain the same for now but I am toying with the idea or switching it out for a 50 for more even gapping. If so I'll keep my 56. If not I'm going to replace my 56 with a 58. Once I decide on those things I will keep it that way for the year and re-evaluate the following year. When I can fit some lessons into my schedule that may change I want to do depending on whatever I can improve upon.

We're going on a Minimalist Adventure who knows were we'll end up:

"Full" 10-Club Bag currently looks like this:

Taylormade Sim Max 7w Mitsubishi Diamana F Limited 75S

@jjfcpa , for your main bag you might try a 4W instead of a 3W. The average golfer can hit a 4W more reliably - and sometimes longer - than a 3W. A little extra loft improves launch, and a shorter shaft helps control.
Or, you may find a 5W works better for both bags. The pro I work with uses this for his FW: a 5W head on a 4-wood length shaft.

Spot on. I got fit for my irons and second guessed it. Didn’t think a full set of blades was a good idea but the fitter was adamant that this is what I should do. Only tinker now it picking up a 3i. Probably T-MB. I’ve had great success armlocking in the past but since tinkering again I think my Scotty is β€œthe” putter for me. I wish there was a version of the 5.5M without the insert. May try to find an X5 with milled face. Only other thing is I may grab a higher bounce SW for spring. It’s so soft up here in Canada the M grind takes pelts. Otherwise I’m committing to my bag for the coming season.
