Nike dropping golf equipment (merged)

Reading the Nike 2017 thread... everyone who was so sure about next clubs, rumors about orange being the new accent color, saying how the Vapor Fly discounting was genius...

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1338928-nike-2017/

:pimp:

These weren't rumors. The clubs are in production. They could launch but will be scrapped now. And orange was the new color.

Maybe Nike will donate them to North Korea!

Kim Jong Il only needs 2 sticks glued together to shoot a 38

I heard he did that with a hammer driver and warrior irons and wedges

How many days before Rory is back playing his titleist clubs and winning again. He has never been the same since he put the Nike clubs in his hand. I bet his confidence level goes through he roof again once he is back with titleist!

That or p*ssing his britches to fill that 10mm yr revenue stream

Hasn't Tiger been playing Miura blades disguised as Nikes? I know he has in the past so maybe he'll go with a mixed bag. Miura irons/wedges, Cameron putter and whatever woods suit his eye. Titleist ball. Keep Nike apparel and he's got a separate bag deal. Doesn't need a club deal. But would be cool to see him go back to where he started with all Titleist.

You mean with Mizuno blades and a Cobra driver. That's how he started.

Kinda funny, they did the same thing in the snowboard industry (my other obsession) from 2008ish-2015. They entered the game and got a TON of slack from all the "core" brands. But at the end of the day, they made some of the best soft goods in the industry. Not to mention signing some of the biggest names in snowboarding.

I've ridden their pants and jackets over the years, and I am still using a pair of boots from 2012. Being the true ho that I am, I just bought another pair of brand new boots from last season at a HUGE discount because they are dunzo in the snowboarding world.

The only time "Rory" "p*ssing his britches" and "revenue stream" go together in a sentence is:

"Rory went to see his financial adviser the other day and when shown his revenue stream he laughed so hard he nearly p*ssed his britches."

Besides, Nike's going to keep paying him for wearing the swoosh. Exactly how much is anyone's guess, but I'm not going out on a limb when I say that I'm pretty sure Rory will be okay revenue stream-wise.

equipment as a whole is going to get more expensive.

I'm not sure this will do it, as Nike was never a major player and there's still plenty of competition.

IMO it would take one of Callaway/TM/Ping/Titleist or a couple more of the 2nd tier guys to throw in the towel before that happens.

And given the results of the last quarter for clubs overall, a price hike would only make sense if OEMs went back to 2 year cycles. And that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

The US market is flat for golf, as is the European market. I suspect more trimming by OEM's. Nike is just getting ahead of the curve. The world

of golf is about to get an adjustment. Less people playing.

The irony in all of this is that Nike is getting absolutely killed in golf apparel by Under Armour and Adidas and losing in footwear to newcomers Skechers and Under Armour. They used to dominate the golf apparel segment.

Their equipment has gotten better over the years and, while significantly smaller than the big four (TM, Callaway, Titelist, and PING), is not falling off the cliff like their apparel business.

Part of the problem is we have Muni's charging higher rates than ever before and the game isn't growing at the rate that it did 10-15 years ago. I can't believe how much it costs to have to play 18 now compared to 07. Literally seems like a 15-20% increase across the board.

Haha, okay man. Why post if you're just gonna blabber nonsense?

And to the people dancing on the grave of Nike golf, you do realize this is BAD on the whole for the regular golfer, right? Less brands, less competition, less innovation.

Nike One Tour D's were an example of what they got right. That was a terrific ball.

The Nike Covert Tour was the worst driver I have ever owned, and it's not even close. The VRII Pro's were the worst feeling forged iron I've ever hit, and that's not close either.

The price of golf is highly location dependent. In my area green fees at public courses are no higher than they were 10-15 years ago and only modestly higher than in 1990. But around here there are way too many golf courses chasing after fewer and fewer golfers. Any place raising their prices right now would see their tee sheet go from half-empty to empty overnight.

Your picture reminds me of something.....

Now that they are all going to become classics, someone needs to do a chart of all the NIke Blades of the last 15 years.

Misunderstood.

They made some fantastic clubs, but their legacy will always be defined by obnoxious contracts, square drivers, cavity back woods, and garish color schemes, instead of their successes like the Pro Combos, Covert Forged irons, VR Pro woods, and support of college programs.

History never looks kindly on the loser.
