no matter what golfer to overcome something like that will be hard. the strongest most positive people would struggle with that. It would have to feel like the world is against you at that point.

That was his own fault forgoing for the green with a 3 shot lead. And his own fault for trying to play it out of 5 foot tall rough on his next shot

Haha. Indeed Van de Velde had one bad break and compounded things. Fowler was unlucky to hit it in the hazard and brutally unlucky to have it roll in the water a second time.

For a ball in play going into a hazard? Been a sensible part of the rules forever. Ball in play vs. exceptions for outside agency (rub of the green), for example, pretty basic and foundational part of the rules of golf.

I just went and tried to read the 2019 rules that were supposed to make things simpler. My brain started hurting after about five minutes, and I had to stop. And I'm a lawyer and read things like this for a living...

The announcing was pretty poor surrounding the Rickie incident. Camera work was on point but the announcers didn’t know what was going on. We miss you Johnny

Roger almost had me convinced, then you probably heard he got Slugger (who probably had no idea of Rickies score at that point) agreeing he was putting for 8 - maybe Roger couldn't make sense of that either and asked Slugger. I'm guessing Rickie would have been checking carefully with Slugger after the hole to make sure he knew his score.

 

I just want to see him get back on track - need some grit!

Hindsight is always 20/20. When a mistake is made we always do that. I remember when Kyle Stanley made a 8 at Torrey pines on 18 because his ball rolled back in the water after laying up. Guys were adamant he was stupid for laying up because going for it took triple out of it.... truthfully both ways of playing the hole the outcome of 8 was probably <1%. He was just the victim of a black swan

 

We do the same with van de Velde. He hit a bar that was like 1 inch wide. If the ball doesn't hit that he's a major champion.

 

It makes us uncomfortable to believe there luck involved in these things, which is why we do this

I miss Johnny, but David Fay would have been all over that!

An interesting point made by Rich Beam. If Rickie leaves the pegs in until just before the shot and it rolls in the water, no penalty, it isn't in play. Just replace it.

 

One other point. People are saying Rickie dropped it before it rolled in the water. He did but it rolled towards the hazard so he ended up placing it which of course makes it more likely to remain static.

Johnny would be having a heyday with RF's lack of clutch play.

 

I'm hoping he can bounce back but hasn't made a good swing in quite a few holes! He REALLY needed those birds early in the round that stayed short on the lip, center of the cup early in the round!
