What would the ruling be had the ball been on the green and it rolled on it's own in a penalty area?

It was a terrible break for sure but he only got screwed out of 1 stroke after all the melodrama. Announcers making it sound like the worst break ever in the history of golf is a bit over the top. I really hope it doesn’t affect the outcome though.

This is getting as bad as the NFL. If that happens on the green, he gets to replace it without penalty but because it rolled into a hazard he gets stung. Stupidly unlucky

I'm going to be slightly facetious, but if a fan picked up his ball and threw it in the water, is he still assessed a penalty for going in the hazard...?

 

I'm not a rules expert...more of a novice...

 

I'm going with outside agency and that is out of total ignorance, being the difference. Believe me, somebody who knows will probably chime in with the reason I'm all wet, no pun intended, in a few seconds - and I'll be happy to know the answer to that as well!

Well it is a bit brutal if your relief area happens to be a spot like that where the ball will come to rest but then roll back in the water.

 

So it has nothing to do with him making a shot. What's he supposed to do, make sure he hits it fast enough before it rolls in the water? Seems a little bush league.

 

I'm not saying the wrong ruling was made. I'm saying this is a specific incident where the rules are a little too penalizing.

No different than hitting your shot there in the first place, it comes to rest and as you are walking over to hit your next shot it rolls in. Just part of the vagaries of conditions on the course, same if the wind comes up - bad break. Blows your ball to a much better lie or even in the hole, great break. Hit your ball in a tree, and as you are walking it falls out, you don't put it back.
