One other point. People are saying Rickie dropped it before it rolled in the water. He did but it rolled towards the hazard so he ended up placing it which of course makes it more likely to remain static.

 

That is interesting and pretty clever if he's correct about that.

It was a terrible break for sure but he only got screwed out of 1 stroke after all the melodrama. Announcers making it sound like the worst break ever in the history of golf is a bit over the top. I really hope it doesn’t affect the outcome though.

 

Who’s to say he would have got up and down the first time. Might have knifed it through the green for all we know . Might not have cost him anything

Seems if you replace a ball that moves inadvertently it shouldn't matter where it ends up.

 

In what world does penalizing a player for that occurence make sense? Oh, yeah, the rules don't make sense.

 

For a ball in play going into a hazard? Been a sensible part of the rules forever. Ball in play vs. exceptions for outside agency (rub of the green), for example, pretty basic and foundational part of the rules of golf.

 

The rules were modified for a ball in play on the green moving "on it's own". Guess that's different.

I'm pretty sure that he's right. We do it all the time without thinking. Taking a drop pegs down, happy with drop, pegs up and balls in play.

That's a dumb rule. That shouldn't be applicable following a penalty where you have to drop.

 

Good Lord, not dumb and no reason to have an exception - the whole point is his ball went from in play and into a hazard, period, let's not start with the "it wasn't his fault stuff".

Well it is a bit brutal if your relief area happens to be a spot like that where the ball will come to rest but then roll back in the water.

 

So it has nothing to do with him making a shot. What's he supposed to do, make sure he hits it fast enough before it rolls in the water? Seems a little bush league.

 

I'm not saying the wrong ruling was made. I'm saying this is a specific incident where the rules are a little too penalizing.

 

No different than hitting your shot there in the first place, it comes to rest and as you are walking over to hit your next shot it rolls in. Just part of the vagaries of conditions on the course, same if the wind comes up - bad break. Blows your ball to a much better lie or even in the hole, great break. Hit your ball in a tree, and as you are walking it falls out, you don't put it back.

 

But specifically after a penalty drop/place? It's an area in the rules where we could see changes. Just like the rules regarding the ball moving on the green were changed. Because the rules aren't perfect and sometimes what would be the most fair and what gets ruled, are two different things.

 

The tee box is given special rules. The putting green has special rules. There could be special rules for a relief area.

 

If Rickie goes on to lose by 1 shot, one could say it was because his ball rolled back in the water when he was 15 yards away. That's not golf. I'd rather see guys win or lose on the merits of their golf shots. Not getting good or bad flukey [rule] breaks.
