What happened on Casey's 3rd shot? Was he in greenside bunker?

< edit >

PGA shot tracker must have messed up. It looked like hit 2nd into the bunker, and 4th onto the green, yet he birdied the hole.

No. He was on a sprinkler. Got a free drop and was able to putt.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

Anyone else pretty sure Fate is on Phils side this year at Pebble after hearing that ? It’s this time or no time. If it’s meant to be , it will be this year.

With the old mini driver from 2013... I think he has a chance.

Unseen, in the background, Fate was quietly slipping the lead into the boxing-glove.  P.G. Wodehouse

I take my bagger comment back, the FedEx guy and Casey were also solid last year ... 2 in a row is a sign of shenanigans

That was a great finish. Phil dominates on Sunday/Monday and Casey scraps his way to a solo second.

Casey wanting to stop was absolutely the right call. With Piercy three putting 18 like that, we saw first hand what putting in the dark can do to the wallet.

With solo second Casey helped his cause by a few hundred grand, correct?

So Casey, by waiting until this morning, gives himself a better chance of making another birdie and finishing solo second.

He did the right thing.

Happy for Phil.

Big difference in prize money, OWGR points, FedEx Cup points etc. it was the only "professional" decision.

Classy comment by Phil about Paul and protecting the field. Who knows if genuine but classy to say regardless.

I agree with comments above, and even Phil said it - AT&T pro am and US Open are two completely different things. I don't think FIGJAM will ever get any US Opens.

Paul Casey has had three 54 hole leads on the PGA Tour in his career.

He failed to win all of them.

His record now stands at 2 wins and 9 seconds.

I thought his record was 1 win 3 losses? He won the 2009 Shell Houston starting the final round tied with the lead shot 72 and won in a playoff with JB.

Fantastic and very convincing win by Phil. Putter is hot, approach play is off the charts, and swinging out of his shoes!

No. US Opens have become young man games due to length and i think also the physical grind of the summer heat. If a fourty something is going to win a US Open it's likely to be at Pebble because it's a shorter US Open course and the bay area weather isn't likely to be a factor. That said Mickelson is going to have the weight of the world on him, especially if he gets into contention. If he already had an Open I'd really like his shot but not a 49 year old with basically his last chance at it.

Hope I'm wrong; it would be my favorite sports story of all time.

The pressure would be insane if he got in contention.

Well. I said if.

But things tend to work when all the sprockets line up. Will be fun to watch. I just see a lot of the markers for a “ unreal event “ lining up. One things for sure. Length isn’t an issue. Besides. Us opens lately are a putting contest anyway. And he knows poa greens.

Paul seems like it's more important to him to be a nice guy and goofy acting than to have any killer instinct whatsoever. He kind of gets this dazed look on his face whenever he gets in contention and you can see he knows it's not going to happen.

Brilliant decision by Phil to skip Torrey Pines a few weeks back. Comes in Fresh(er) and pulls on #5 at PB!! Hope the trend to skip courses that don't his game continues.
