I will never understand all the love that the first hole at Sheep Ranch gets. Sure, it’s got pretty views of the ocean in the background, but the hole is absolutely and completely devoid of any strategy whatsoever. Ocean views are nice, but far more important to me is how interesting a golf hole plays.

Most of Sheep Ranch is devoid of any strategy, so maybe it fits.  I think it’s a decent opening hole, certainly enhanced by the ocean as you walk over that crest.

Strategically probably weaker than other opening holes on property, but Sheep is an optics course at this point, over half the people are playing it for the views.

Need some travel advice, American changed my flight for April and it kinda screwed everything up.  Looking at rebooking, do you guys think I could make a 5:40 pm flight out of Eugene if I play a 8am tee time on Pacific?

Absolutely, shouldn’t be an issue at all.

My group a guy out of Eugene around 3:00, and we narrowly made that, so 5:40 will be safe with some wiggle room.

100% no issues. I've said it before but I think Eugene is almost the perfect airport to fly into. Big enough for real jets, small enough that you can get from your gate to your car in ten minutes....if you slow walk it. You could get there at 5p and be more than comfortable making it.

Our obsession with ranking experiences can easily get out of hand.

I get that where several courses share the same property there's going to be a tendency to compare them this way. At the same time, you'd hope anyone playing Sheep Ranch or Bandon Trails is also comparing those courses to the rest of their personal golf experience or the courses they play back home.

To say a course that is ranked in the top fifty courses you can play is wholly inferior to a "top five you can play" on the same property seems like looking a gift horse in the mouth. It's still just golf!

Would it be better if there were still only three courses there, forcing people to book 4-5 years in advance instead of 1-2? Likely not.

I agree with you on the rankings.  I have played alot of nice courses in my day including Whistling Straits, Sand Valley, Mammouth Dunes, Streamsong, Erin Hills,  Arcadia Bluffs, Forest Dunes and the list goes on and on.

The 5 courses at Bandon are the 5 best courses I have ever played....they are simply that good.  But to be honest....when I go again I prob will leave off Old Mac as the other 4 were far superior in my opinion.  Ill prob play the ocean courses and sprinkle in trails and old mac but hard not to be on the ocean after all the travel hassle and cost

Its why peoples rankings amuse me more than anything, I dont give one rip what people think of my "rankings" but yes, some people take it personally - which I dont get. I loved SR, its my number one easily. Some people hated it - but wtf do I care if someone doesnt like it. In fact, I hope more people start to hate it because it will make it that much easier for me to get a tee time next time I go LOL. But god forbid you dont love playing OM...

No matter which course we talk about, just because some magazine thinks a course is good doesnt beholden someone to love it.

Am I the only one that thinks #1 at OM is sneaky good? It’s your first tee shot of the day if you play it in the morning so you want to hit a full driver. However by doing so I left myself a handsy 40 yard pitch off a hard pan lie over a gaping bunker to a double plateau green. The opening 2 holes at OM when it’s chilly in the morning are nervy for me.

I enjoy Old Mac # 1...Its a nice starter hole with alot of options in terms of how you want to play it.  Old Mac is a solid course I and Love the feeling playing it when its cloudy, hazy, etc....just has a great feel with ghost tree and fog and haze....pretty stinking cool

Random Question....what do you think Bandon Dunes is worth today as it sits.  I know Keiser would never sell it but at $350-$400 a round in peak season I am curious to what the actually value of the resort is

Not to mention the revenue from lodging and a captive drinking/eating audience.  I bet Mr. Keiser owns that entire property free and clear.  Other than property taxes and upkeep.

I thought in the book it mentioned his preference to pay all cash for properties, no? Maybe some of that changed as it expanded but I thought it read that the property for BD and Pacific was a cash deal.

Absolute disaster for travel out of PDX/Eug today, so I ended up getting stuck until (hopefully) tomorrow.  Will ultimately miss Christmas with my side of the family, but gave me a chance to play a little extra golf.

However, primary point of this post is a shoutout to Bandon Fish Market.  The halibut fish & chips is perfect, worth a trek from the resort.

I wish there was another casual dining option outside of McKees.  I generally have a favorable view of McKees, but maybe I am just bored of it.  It's fairly small and get's quite busy.  It feels like the resort could handle another large "sports bar" of sorts.

A couple weeks back one of the shuttle drivers said he's overheard the new restaurant (in construction behind OM 18) will be The Forge and the current spot of Forge (at the Lodge) will be redesigned into a full sports bar with TV's, pool tables, bar food, etc..

I've also heard separately the spot behind OM 18 will be a pizza spot - good news is regardless of what's true, more dining options.

Enough to say that Father Time remains undefeated in more than just human terms (looking at you, TW...), so I'll resist the temptation to make further snarky comments of an existential/afterlife nature.

But curious if anyone has ever hit that tree with their tee shot on #3?

I've come close a few times, but never actually plunked it.  Can't imagine no one has, tho.

I have seen it once out of  about 100 tees shots I have seen. Talked the starter about that one time and he says he saw it at least once a week. The best shot I find is about 5 yards right of it with a bit of draw. Given this is what I try to hit I have come close to it a few times.

First trip there and my buddy, who hits the ball really low, hits a low line drive that hits the tree square on the trunk.  I nearly fell over laughing. It was so loud, the rest of the trip I joked it may fall over soon.  Sad to see it may finally happen.
