I think it depends on how far you want to go back, and what type of clubs you are talking about. If it is just about all irons

Ping BeNi ISI. More so than the BeCu's IMO.

Yeah, '99 Hogan Apex. MB irons for those that think hitting blades is beyond the realm of possibility.

Wilson FG-17. Don't think I'd label them as a "joy to play" though.

Snake Eyes 600 C & M. A very good forged component head. With a lineage to the '99 Apex.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Ping G25 and Callaway Steelhead X-14 as mentioned above. Titleist AP2 (?712/714 which ever were Speith's clubs), P790s I think deserve a mention.

Agree on the Armour 845s. Gamed a set of Cleveland TA-3's for a bunch of years and it has never occurred to me to really miss them, so surprised they have come up on this thread.

I think you may be referring to the Maxfli MCT-97 blades by Maltby. Really nice looking cast club that I would have liked to try.

Another one I never tried but definitely should be mentioned are the Maxfli Revolutions. Lots of players liked them.

casual musings on some club brands over fifty years...

modern club origin story=hogan precision. theres no mp14 without it. whom did hogan steal it from? probably macgregor? hdk. later..

hogan apex models...they made so many excellent models until they didnt. faves: redlines, pc, apex II. wished tk had no v grind.

any number of macgregors, seriously a monster company back when. dominant. silver scot, tourney. vip.

wilson staff. JP never liked wilsons but they were sort of right there. bullet back? did weiskopf play those?

titleist 680 anyone? admittedly, JP was biased against 690. for titleist it was a big yawn till..last two 716/718 ap2 models and their 700 series mb and cb irons. always loved their cb irons even the very ugly looking dci.

played 2 years w mp32s. a little overrated as a performer. not even the best mp model, they just looked so very very cool. best mp to date? 4 or 68, possibly 20.

bridgestone? is the feels so long ago J series its last iron gasp? senior clubs and a ball company now in US

srixon, z785 was maybe its best iron evah. never hit the 985 but imagines it....yow.

ping eye2. game changer. give it to that karsten guy. when released thought they werent as overtly awful looking as the ist. eye2 were manageable ugliness. always felt too upright.

also mention tommy armour 845 patent pending cb for the guys shopping clubs at Sears or Sams. they were great.

callaway apex forged mb is one of the loveliest recent beauties. like mp68 but maybe more svelte? some of their apex pro series and x forged irons are butter.
