Did he pick up speed

I actually think he's swinging TOO fast now.  It's not as smooth as it used to be.

As much as I like RF, I wonder now if he's EVER going to break through.  I know he's changed his swing this year, but he's so up and down.  He's not lost like Jordan Spieth, but he's still knocking on the door after all that promise and talent.

I wonder if he’s gonna end up as this generations Kuchar.  Just makes a ton of money and has a ton of top tens but never quite wins the big one.  This past year has been, I think, his worst on tour while he changes his swing.  If he can get his form again it seems likely he’ll just keep playing for years and years.

Who knows how he’ll end up this week - he’s playing terribly today so far.

Beth page black would easily be tillinghast best course had he finished the greens (a local firm did it when he left the project). Far better course than winged foot who's land was so plain they felt they needed to trick up every green. BPB just needed some of that contouring instead of the pancake flat surfaces out there now.

It was never a Tillinghast course (he was retained as a consultant after the layout had been designed), but agree that it would have been even greater with more interesting greens.

Good read on uncovering the history of Bethpage https://www.golfdigest.com/story/who-designed-bethpage-black

Looks like the cut line went to +3. Pretty amazing given where we started the week with scoring predictions.  I don’t know if it it will go to +4 or not given +4 is T75 - isn’t the wind supposed to pick up this afternoon?

It wouldn't shock me if it went to +5 or maybe +6.  Weather is coming in.  I think it's just going to come down to timing and some luck.

Agreed, I'm thinking at least+5 for the cut. Scores are higher today. Can always pretty much double the Thursday line.

Let's be realistic and objective about him:

- he lacks length off the tee

- he lacks accuracy off the tee

- he's a streaky putter

- his short game is overall is deteriorating, with that chunked chip

- he doesn't attack courses

- he is a good wedge player with both distance and spin control, but that won't be anywhere near enough to compensate for the above

JD, we are on the same page. You’ve been out here even longer than I, back to 2007.

Eveything you just said has been true for many years. Remember when TW had the yips, “chip yips”, every “yip” known to man, couldn’t keep up distance wise, broken back, on drugs, and mentally toast?

Here is my take on being realistic....

If TW is healthy enough and driven enough to practice and play the same regiment he did in 2018,19 again, he can beat anybody at the Masters or Open.

The Masters I would agree. I am not sure about any other major. I think Augusta plays well into his strengths, favors the experienced and is not as penal if you get a bit loose.

So far, at least as of Friday morning, what I'm seeing seems to illustrate that PGA pros can handle anything but firm and fast...that's about the only defense these days.

As for WF, I never got the adulation.  It's set on an incredibly boring piece of land, and every hole looks the same.   Most holes have a big rectangular green that you can run your ball up...great for bogey members, but on TV, visually really dull.    For all the talk about greens and greens complexes, I'm seeing no more than the usual three putts, and people seem to be able to scramble with a decent lie.

The most memorable feature of a course is the stately and very important (and wealthy) looking clubhouse...probably why they continue showing it.

I think these greens are pretty wild. There are 5 foot putts with 3 feet of break...

As I said earlier in this thread - the championship would be far more interesting and entertaining if the green complexes had no rough.

bryson's putter is letting him down, he'd be right up there near the top otherwise. conditions seem like they will get progressively more difficult with more wind effecting shots and drying greens further (yesterday they had no wind)
