Putter face milling

For you guys out there that are big putter guys. What is your preference for milling. Style, depth, etc. An why?

I like a variety, it is the spice of life after all. But I don't like extremely clicky and I don't like overly soft, but that just means it leaves a lot of options for me. If you look at my collection it's all over the place.

My taste also evolves. I had many deep milled putters when it was all the rage 5-10 years ago. My newer putters are lightly milled.

Byron morgan tuna milling is the best feeling face to me.   I have a few of his lighter mill depth variations that I enjoy as well.

I've had a couple with deep milling and have now moved to a medium milling.  The deep ones almost felt too soft.  I would go light to medium if I was having another putter built now.  The type of shaft you choose can also have an affect on it too.

Fine milling has the best feel for me.

I've had a lot of milled putters in the last 14 years. I've decided I don't like deep milling--too soft and unresponsive.

 

My favorite is a fine milling. Distinct in appearance but not overly soft. I like to know where on the face I've made impact.

 

Here is my Cameron Studio Stainless Newport 2. This is my all time favorite milling.

I prefer a hard/firm feel off the putter and ball (play tp5x, prov1x). I love my 2012 select but have seen some say it is deep milled, I would say more medium and it has a nice firm feel with a X ball. It is certainly deeper than the studio stainless above. Deep in my mind would be the original huntington beach (not soft tech) from cleveland.

Bettinardi BB style fly face milling works really well for me.

So in terms of Scottys that's a deeper milling. Now medium and deep milling vary on putter maker to putter maker. Also other factors lead to sound as well so just be aware of that.

Very light mill, basically flat. More visual effect than function. Scotty Studio Stainless is perfect.

I have tried a lot of different types of face milling from my time owning a putter company.  However attached is my favorite so far.

Here is an example of medium milling.  Some may thing it’s deep, but it’s marketed as medium from the maker.  It still has that solid, thud “pop” at impact without being overly soft.  Very very nice feel.

Smooth, used to prefer deep but after a couple smooth it is my favorite now! Just personal preference though

Thanks I’ll be interested to see how the feel changes with the UST frequency filtered shaft that’s on its way.   I almost bought a piretti goat when I ordered the Kingston.

Where did you find the UST frequency shaft? I had one in an old circa and loved it and never could find them again!

I bought my first Bettinardi last year and I was pleasantly surprised with the honeycomb milling. Much softer than I was expecting, but still plenty of feedback.

Smooth for me as well.  I find it works much better on putts from inside 15-feet.  I can take a shorter stroke and still easily get the ball to the hole at the optimal speed.
