How could anyone be a fan of Patrick Reed?

I must admit, I am genuinely surprised at the support that Patrick Reed has.

The guy is a complete sociopath but I am sure that the me (or should I say us - shout out to Justine) vs the World is part of his raison d’etre. Not sure that he would be half the player if was if it weren’t for the chip that he has on his shoulder.

If he’s not an outright cheater, he’s at least a dude who completely skirts the rules to benefit.  It’s gone way beyond a mistake or two. I don’t understand how anyone could root for this guy. Just the absolute worst kind of pro there is, in my opinion. He’s embarrassing. The “plugged lie” in The Farmers just proves once again that he’s a cheat. I can’t imagine what his fellow competitors really think about him

So did Mcllroy also cheat on the 18th?  I'm not a fan and when I looked at the footage the way he looked at the ball made me think he had another agenda, but in this instance he did not do anything wrong.  Past incidents just made people assume he had done something wrong

I took Rory and Rory doing it as them saying. If its ok for Rewd then I'll do the same.

Like if I let one of my kids get away with eating a whole bag of Haribo. If the other kid then did the same, I'm in no position to punish the second one as I'd be a hypocrite.

I think there are a lot of hangers-on too. Think about it, with topics like this, how could you indeed root for him. You will be different and that's just what Patrick Reed was his whole life. Try to be no different to others, otherwise you're weird.

From the beginning, since people are randomly and most of all anonymously mocking Reed, I'm beginning to like this guy. For his thick skin (no pun hehe). Oh and also, every post of the PGA or so about Reed on the social media gets a lot of childish comments, just throwing in some 'popular' joke/rand about him for the likes. Pathetic.

I don't particularly care for the guy.

But he takes every advantage to win.  Maybe gets a bit over the edge but so what.

I'm sure you all watch or have played American Football.  I bet there is at least one foul committed on every play.

I'm Canadian and I played hockey.  We all know how to hook or interfere to gain an edge.

The trick is not to get caught.

So why not for golf too.

What I do admire about him is 1) his ability to cheat just enough to not get caught or 2) if he does get caught (sand incident) he doesn't give a crap.   He is by far the most professional cheater in golf today and you have to admire him for that.

I am sick of everyone that seems to think golfers are so angelic and how honorable the game is ..... I don't believe it for a moment.

Joe Montana: If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying,

We wont be having a game anytime soon

He's a great player who's prone to the odd lie improvement. The fact that he has no conscience about it points towards a hint of sociopathy and a lack of thought or respect for his fellow competitors....probably the signs of a fierce competitor and winner. Difficult to warm to...but hey, Patrick's not bothered.

People like him because 'Merica'. Wear that red, white and blue outfit on a Sunday and the blind faithful will root for anyone.

If say, Hatton or Rahm had the same history they would be getting crucified on here.

Have you been on the Farmers Insurance thread? He is only short of being burned at the stake over there and on Social Media too.

Reed wouldn't be a guy that I'd probably like to hang with, but I admire the hell out of his mental toughness and the game he has. He doesn't care if he's likeable. Golf is a business and he's not out there to make friends.

While he did nothing wrong per the official, moving the ball appears shady to the casual viewer, especially given his past lie “enhancements”, and could be interpreted as nefarious.

On a positive note, PR is highly entertaining to watch, has a fantastic approach/short game, and is essentially the Lex Luther of golf. He also has an IDGAF attitude about him, and continues that mantra by doing things like wearing red on Sunday.

He seems to lack the ability to pick and choose his battles. Nobody that high up on tour needs the money to survive. You don’t need to skirt the rules so closely just to win the damn Farmers Insurance open ....  by 5 shots.

If he’s playing golf for money, he doesn’t seem to realise brand image is worth more $$$ than any number of ordinary tournament wins. If he’s playing golf to get all time win records and cement his place in history, that ship has almost certainly sailed.

I've been a big fan of Patrick Reed since Day 1. It's pretty obvious that Messrs. Nance, Lerner, Chamblee, Schauflele, et. al. are not.  No need to explain why.  To each his own.

On another note, when CBS got all of their talking heads on air to reminisce about "back in the day" and how they handled rules issues, I didn't know if the conversation said more about the changing culture on tour or their out-of-touch-ness with today's player.  Probably a little of both.  There definitely appears to be a more permissive attitude about touching the ball first and asking questions later among today's tour pros.  I don't know how you get that genie back into the bottle.

Finally, I don't know what they're paying Ken Tackett, but they need to double it. Or at least give a him a bottle of scotch at the end of each tournament.

Certainly better than the wannabe District Attorneys on here who are trying to twist the answer of "No, I didn't see it bounce" by the marshal to prove something else, what exactly, I'm not sure. Just stop.

There's getting to be more guys on tour that don't want a club deal. Reed is a club Ho and likes the freedom to play what he likes. Nothing wrong with that.

I hear you, equipment free agents have done well, and we love them on the WRX.

I think there's a subtle difference between 1) Don't want or need a club deal and 2) Can't get a club/apparrel deal.  If you take a look at what Reed's wife said when he was "ditched" by Nike that will give you a bit of an insight.  Added to that, the Callaway guys threw a two day party when he got canned by them.  Reed then went on to use an independent club builder who has his truck on tour (SEG Golf) but I don't think that ended well either.

If I dare start the conversation......

I think a lot of the things you list are attractive in a way.  Not passing the interview at several private clubs is something that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.  Let’s call it Rodney Dangerfield syndrome.  There will always be misfits and snooty places that don’t allow them access.

same for apparel deals. I said this with the JT incident. I believe it to be healthier to not have a deal and be allowed to exercise freedom of speech.  Even if it’s a word you shouldn’t use.  I personally don’t like the idea of having to be on a leash for $.  Which is probably why I’ve always worked for myself in a field where I’m alone a lot.  And I don’t consider myself a bad person for feeling that way.

100% there is something in that, be your own man, and to hell with whatever everyone else thinks.  I admire some people who go the lone wolf route, without doubt.

For professional athletes who operate in the tours/leagues I think there is a whole other world and when faced with banking really good $$$ they will tow the party line and play nice.

The point I was making is that each of us will make our own mind up on Reed based on what we see and what we hear.  Some will like him and some will hate him, he's polarising.  But the thing I've found interesting is that he's been largely cast out by the main stream golf companies (again, that might make him appealing to you) but for me it tells me something extra, it tells me they don't want their brand associated to that player, and they will have good reasons behind that.  Very good reasons in fact because he's top ten in the world, is a hell of a player and wins regularly on the biggest of stages.  He can do all of these things and still remain a villain.

Correct.  He couldn't see it.  He asked the marshall standing right there. She says it didn't bounce.  He has no way of knowing.  Rules say he can mark and pick it up, but not clean it.

Cbs is just looking to grind an axe and make a story.

Sure looked like Rory's caddie cleaned his ball....

Yep. I see what you’re saying.  And certainly some truth to it.

as far as the guy himself. I’d love to know the truth for myself.  30 minutes alone and I’d know.  But I haven’t had the chance.  But a couple here have.  And they give glowing accounts ( forgedforever) and one other semi famous athlete I won’t name since he asked me not to a while back.  That doesn’t make my mind up. But it certainly makes me not jump on the torches and pitch fork bandwagon that flames away here.  Lol.  Especially in this incident where they watched Rory do the same exact thing , and are willing to give him a complete pass for it.

at any rate.  Let’s think about the microscope he’s been under.  All that attention and scrutiny and the best they’ve found lately is him following the rules.  Lol. So now they are griping about what the rules allow.  It’s nuts.
