I am a fan a great music

I am a fan of great art

I am a fan a great scientific achievement

I am a fan of great Athletic achievement

I am a fan of great golf

If I limited my enjoyment of great achievements to those people I felt worthy of whatever high standards I might have on morals, ethics, lifestyle, etc.   I would miss out on a lot.

I'm pretty indifferent to Patrick Reed but when hes in contention and I see the hate he gets I can't help but root for him a bit.

Reed obviously has had a few brushes with the rules officials and now gets singled out for it because from what i saw there wasn't a lot of difference between what he did and what Rory did.

Have to add that even as European i do love Reed in the Ryder Cup!

Not a fan of Reed either.  I dunno, but when your peers don't have kind words for you(Harris English, college team mate among others) that says quite a bit.  Not going to comment about Saturday's incident or any of his past questionable on course choices regarding the rules but I will congratulate him for the win yesterday in brutal conditions.   It takes a lot more than skirting the rules to shoot 14 under for the tourney.

I'm not a psychologist with the FBI or anything but he just comes across as a street wise guilty man trying to act innocent.  He does the things that, in my experience, liars and cheats do.  He projects a poor image.  He does seem to take a lot of delight in being a heel and winning.

Only one person truly knows if that ball was embedded and he's cashing a check for $1.4M.

Reed's reputation precedes him.  That fact gives those who don't like him an opportunity to unload.

Next caller, you're on the air.

In fairness, there is good reason. He has blatantly cheated on air quite a few times. Multiple reports of him cheating in college as well as stealing money from teammates. I play with guys who do stuff like this all the time and it really can make a big difference in the outcome. Trying an iron a few times behind the ball before switching to a wood out of the rough? I lost a match to this kind of crap last year and it cost me the club match play championship. I didn’t have enough evidence at the time to bring it up but a guy we play with in the group told me after the fact that he say the guy improve his lie multiple times during the match. He also had an “embedded” ball that I watched him push on and then pick up. It’s pretty easy to make an indent if it’s even remotely soft.

Try to tell me Reed wasn’t trying to finger that hole like a teenager on prom night. Think about it. Nobody else was near it. You look at that ball and there is no way it was plugged. He palmed it so easily could have given it a press before picking it up, and he also put it aside and was fingering around in there for like 10 seconds before anyone saw. Rory’s has a rep for being beyond reproach and has earned the benefit of the doubt. Reed has not.

When you have very obviously cheated multiple times in competition, people are going to call you out and suspect you. I agree that he was incredible mental fortitude to give everyone more of that finger and win. I respect that big time. I just think that he’s good enough at golf that he should stop pulling this kind of crap and just keep winning. As the “awful” CBS crew said, if he just keeps winning and stops all this people will stop caring after a few years.

The guy is a dirt bag.  A very talented dirt bag, but a dirt bag none the less.  Its not the fact that he got a ruling and a drop for a ball that we all know was not embedded,  it's what he did around the ball... that we all know was not embedded.  The drop/ruling did not win him the tournament.  It just further shows the kind of a person he is.

Except, Rory did not ask a rules official. He just told his partners what he was going to do. If anything, Reed did more to make sure he was within the rules.

while this is true, i am quite certain reed also follows the adage "the bigger the lie, the more that believe it" ... going to those lengths works as cover for his forthcoming lie, ala Sharon Stone ...

Very simple here.  He asked the spotter/volunteer if it bounced, the volunteer either said no or I didn't see it bounce( I cannot remember which).  The course was pretty wet in some of the rough areas.  He is allowed to check it to see if it is embedded.  This is all within the rules and asking the volunteer is either being smart or covering his A $ $ or pre-meditation.  Either way WE have no idea which, his track record shows it was probably pre-meditation, but the rules do not care about the track record of a person.

The issue most have with this, is the pulling of the ball, palming it, placing it somewhere else and then monkeying around where it hit in the ground.  NO telling what he was doing.

My thoughts are he knows EXACTLY what the rules will let him get away with and he went right to the edge and called the rules official because he knew the rules official couldn't say differently at that point.  Was it shady?  Absolutely.  Would we think it was shady if Tiger, or Speith, Thomas, or Rickie or countless others did it?  Probably but a much lighter shade.

Because I know people who knew him in college and people who played with people he played with or played with him in college and I have heard everything from there I WILL NEVER pull for him.  I never have pulled for him and never will.

I do know one thing, Xander has moved into my top 5 PGA pros I will pull for after his comments on it though.

Also as far as the Rory thing, he gets a pass when his ball was stepped on he got what he deemed to good of a lie and asked for it to be placed in a worse lie at the 2020 PGA.  The rules may not care about your history, but opinions do, and this is why Rory is getting a pass and Reed is not.

Patrick Reed is Captain America.   He makes many fanbois and CBS heads explode.   He has a good record at the Ryder.   Rory did the same thing.  P Reed beat the rest of the field at Torrey by 5 strokes.  I wanted Hovland but respect Reed for the win.

If the PGA and media jackals like CBS want to go after anyone then go after the PGA and also Rory.   PS: I have been a Rory fan before he even played in the USA.  The PGA needs to  hire more rules officials for tourneys.  They hoard all the billions and get volunteers for free labor.  Spread the wealth around and hire a few more rules people and stop the Jim Nantz moralizing.   He fawns over big business, NCAA and all the powers that be.

The defense of Reed in this thread is laughable. Being a great golfer does not excuse having a complete lack of regard for the rules. I bet most of you Reed defenders also have Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire posters in your bedrooms.

How do you feel about Barry ?  Let’s not leave out the biggest juicer of them all.

At least you can admit that it’s public opinion and not a breach of rules.  That’s a step in the right direction.

I don't think it's overly complicated why some fans like Reed or people similar to him . It is usually 1 of 2 reasons:

1) Guy really isn't that bad and the media coverage tends to snowball/pile on and ends up making the guy seem worse than he is. I always felt this happened to Sergio a bit, who always seemed like he had a softer side even despite his missteps.

2) Guy actually is that bad, but still has fans because of "counter culture" where people will like him specifically because they are told they shouldn't. And it's more about not being told what to do than about the person
