It’s time for Phil to move on from Andrew Gettson and try another putter. Needs to change it up.

Hot take. I’ll bite. Phil needs to be a little more obsessed with proximity to the hole and a little less with watching his bombs sail into no man’s land. I like Phil. He gets credit for slimming down and having the confidence to wear aviators while missing cuts. Yes, putting needs improvement.

Average, crooked driving and can’t putt. Needs to rewind the clock at Augusta!

Here are some (unpleasant) Phil Facts:

I have to agree.  He needs to focus on getting into play more.  Didn’t Butch try to shorten his backswing?  Maybe he should go with that?

I also agree his putting looks awkward.  When you watch his old tuition video (and I must watch it once a month!) he looked so much more comfortable over putts.  Might even be worth going to a larger putter head?

It's not the putter. No one wins against father time, including Phil.

I concur with this. Caught the last few holes of the Tucson event last night and could not figure out why he’s trying to do extraordinary things when ordinary is more than sufficient. Tee shot on 17 was a wild swing for no reason, and the approach into 18 gave me a headache. 149, flat fairway lie, good angle to a pin dead center of green yet he set up for a big sweeping hook with a 9 iron. Just hit a stock 9, no need to try to show off for no reason. I think he needs a better caddie as much as anything to get him into the right shot the 3 or 4 times a round that he wants to hit unnecessarily complex shots.

Phil will never fire his full time caddy/brother, Tim Mickelson.  I agree with your post about how Phil shouldn't over complicate things, but I do like that he always stays true to himself out on the course.

I reckon Mickelson is treating playing tour events as more of a hobby rather than a job.

He is probably not bothered by his results.

Ya, he just go out like most people play casual rounds, have fun. and make side bets. But he do it on tour! Talk about his coffee company and annoy everybody 😂

Having said that, STOP WITH THE OBSESSION WITH DISTANCE! Stricker, Furyk, Zach et al give up 25 yards and are still competitive

I’ll go contrarian here and say he should step up his distance game. He should go train with Bryson and get his swing speed up as high as possible. 130+ is in the tank for Phil since he’s probably about 125 right now. On the course throttle it back to hit more fairways but still carry it 330.

I agree he's probably not bothered, and uses any purses won as tip money.

Having said that, STOP WITH THE OBSESSION WITH DISTANCE! Stricker, Furyk, Zach et al give up 25 yards and are still competitive. Phil's 80% swing is plenty long to compete on any tour. Plus, his "bombs" aren't that long anymore. He is putting pressure on his iron game and putting, and it shows.

Relax, re-introduce yourself to the fairway, and play...gasp...controlled golf. Fun? Maybe not. Exciting? Nope. But capable of winning, especially at Augusta? Absolutely!

PS - Phil, you're over 50. Some of my best golf was/is being played when I was over 50. Accept it, revel in it, and good things will happen.

Carried one drive 342 at the recent Champions tour event.. I’d say the guy can bomb it..

He is 50 years old in the HOF has about 400-500 million I think that swing and putter has done him well

No doubt about it.  And if he enjoys it and doesn’t care about putting well anymore, then it’s none of my concern.  That said, he started using that putter with an entirely different grip and stroke.  It made sense in a way to use something with so much toe hang at that point.  But using that putter with the claw just makes no sense to me.  I’m sure he has a lot of comfort with it after all these years, but if winning and putting well is a priority (and if it is not then I understand and am fine with that) I would think a change would serve him well.  There is a reason that no one uses anything similar anymore, especially with a claw grip.

I would think most players go to teachers, and tell them what they need. So, Phil tells his teacher that he wants to hit bombs, and the teacher gets the heat because his game falls off. I really doubt a teacher would approach one of the best players in the world, and tell him he could make him better. Mabye Phil would be better served with a different teacher, but he also would be better served to work on something else.

I totally disagree. I had some of the best putting years ever using the same putter with the claw grip. I'm pretty sure Phil and Pelz figured out what works best for him. What DOES effect putting though is almost 51 year old nerves.

I dont know what Phil needs but it isn't advice on how to play golf at a high level from an internet forum.

QFT.

Rather than advice I’ll just say this - I’m not sure what he’s really trying to accomplish.

He got in better shape (kudos), started wearing chromed out sunglasses, long ago went to putting with a grip that isn’t usually utilized with his style putter and has an unusually large interest in distance for a guy who has as much seasoning as he does.   He’s marketable so he’s killing it there so to me I kind of think he’s just having fun.

To be clear, I’m not saying he doesn’t still want to win.  I am saying that, outside looking in, It looks a lot less like a guy who is truly driven to win and a lot more like a guy who has already put in tens of thousands of hours practicing/grinding/competing and now he’s just kind of enjoying the fruits of that labor.

Cant say I blame him - he gets fly around to play the game he loves, doesn’t matter if he wins or not and he’s still gettin’ paid nicely.  Not so bad for part time gig.

Mickelson is not 125, more like 116 - 117
