Greatest under and over performers at the Ryder Cup?

Wormkiller

Recommended Posts

Tiger, Jim Furyk, Curtis Strange and Stricker were all terrible in the Ryder Cup as a rule. Weird how we make them all captains (I’m sure Tiger will be soon).

European over performers tend to be 1 or 2 year guys like David Howell, Pieters, Phil Walton or whoever that make a team, beat a US heavyweight in a pivotal match. Although Poulter might be a career RC over performer.

Tiger Woods’ incredible career and celebrity basically forced the Captain to play him in 4 or 5 matches in every Cup. Even if he wasn’t playing well. (It’s a mystery why he didn’t perform better in the RC.) Watson sat Phil down and this was a factor which led to the Task Force. As you know, Tiger and Phil are both out, and the US now has 8 guys which have been at the top or very near the top of the rankings. This fact should enable Stricker to be more flexible in determining who plays and who does not on day 2 - without much criticism from fans and media. Can you imagine sitting Tiger Woods?

It would be like replacing Babe Ruth in a WS. But hey, he is in a mini slump! (No chance! You keep him in and hope he breaks out.)

Only played once, but Peter Baker played out of his skin in 1993 winning three out of his four matches, including a 6&5 fourball thrashing of Couples & Azinger and a singles win over Corey Pavin.

Made about 4 miles of putts if I remember right, perfect example.

I think it has a greater positive impact on players' legacies rather than negative. Everybody knows how good Poulter is in this event, but Tiger gets a pass for his abysmal record, because it wasn't always fully on him. Reed likely wouldn't have what little fandom he does if not for his heroics the past few events.

Mickelson for once has to be thankful that Tiger gets all the attention on this, as he has a horrible record considering his status in the game the last 25 years. And that was after a blistering start at Oak Hill in 95. He had big singles losses in tight Cups in 02 and 2012. If Tiger is exhibit A of underachiever, Phil is right behind him IMO. Corey Pavin was something of an over performer in the RC, just a straight gamer.

I think we can all agree that the underperformer is Tiger.

Overperformer based on the OWGR is Poulter imho.

Tiger underperformed or his teammates can't perform?

Larry Nelson had a superb RC record. And three majors yet hardly gets a mention.

He should have been a Captain long ago.

Is there a way to look up single matches records?

I wonder how under/over performance still holds with single match records. I'm sure Ian Poulter is probably still awesome on single matches.

Here's a link for all US Ryder Cup players and their records in all formats. I haven't searched for a Euro link, but I'd assume there's a matching list for them somewhere.

Thanks!

USA: https://www.rydercup.com/news-media/all-time-usa-player-records

Europe: https://www.rydercup.com/news-media/all-time-european-player-records

I just eyeballed both tables. Tiger's single match records is 4-2-2 (W-L-T), which is probably the best among his U.S. contemporary peers. Take his single match record to the Europe side, it is still up there (although it wouldn't be the top).

We can draw some more nuanced data points. Maybe Tiger did not under perform per se, maybe he just did not enhance his playing partners in team matches.

I mean Phil has played in the most matches and also holds the most losses (which you'd kinda expect) so I'd think he's probably underperformed.

I think everyone agrees with Poulter being an over performer, but I'd also think Sergio to some capacity.

Came here to say that, that was the biggest shock in singles ever?

Price was a journeyman European Tour pro, only 3 wins over 15-20 years, only one top 10 ever in a major, only even qualified for the Masters once and couldn't keep his PGA Tour card when he got one.

Yet beats one of the best players of his generation.

That 2002 Ryder Cup was one of the best European wins, probably the biggest overperformance by a team because it wasn't a particularly strong one. Very weak in depth and way out of form players after it was delayed.

Now there was a young fellow who one expected to be one of the really greats. Saw him playing live,  was the kind of most promising englishman at the time. What made his career go down?
