Callaway UW

Good Morning everyone.

Has anyone had a chance to hit the Callaway UW? (apologies if already a thread, did a quick forum search and found nothing)

From pictures this club looks like it would be great as a 5 wood, and i've been searching for something compact to swap out with my DI.

Supposed to be for the High Skilled player. Like a 2H is really difficult to play for most of us, this would be a slightly larger one, but on a longer shaft, so will require some skill to hit. I am going to PGA SS to try it out, but I don't have confidence going in that I will be a candidate. (13 Handicap)

I like the way it looks but the price tag plus upcharge for custom shaft is off putting.

I took mine out for the first time yesterday! I have it shafted with an Atmos Blue 8x. I have a 21 degree to go up against my 7 wood. I really like it so far, its much easier to work and flight the ball then my 7 wood. Also should mention that ive never gotten along with hybrids. I would equate it to fairway woods that i played as a junior (early 2000's). Also I think its for everyone really, My friend who is a 18 handicap hit it a few time and really loved it. So much that he picked up a 17 degree on his way home to replace his 4 wood.

I’ve seen it in person and it’s a very simple and good looking head. Great shape, not big, just a small fairway wood shape. Good face depth but not too deep. HZRDUS Rdx 70 stock shaft. I didn’t get a chance to hit it but it looks very easy to hit. Definitely a cross between hybrid and fairway wood, but the did a great job on the shape.

Got Mine!  Looks fantastic!  Easy to hit, centered every one and feels hot and solid (off the mat).  I settled for the Project X as I didn't want to wait, but seemed decent at the shop.

From address it reminds me a lot of my Nickent 3DX Utility DC which was exactly this; a cross between their fairway and hybrid.  Beyond that it's miles different.

Mats and launch monitors are meaningless to me, can't wait to get it out on the course!  I will say it sets up open, launches low and definitely seems anti left; exactly what I'm looking for.

I haven’t hit it, or seen it, but it seems like it’s just a HyWay  with a bunch of good marketing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It wouldn’t be the first time Callaway took inspiration from a Maltby design. The TS1 and Apex Pro irons bear a strong resemblance to one another. The TS1 was our first.

I would be interested in a comparison to the new Epic Super Hybrid, which lists for $100 more at $399.

Nothing for either on head cc size?

Got some range time with it Tuesday and played my first round with it Thursday.

I am coming from an Epic Speed 5 wood.

The UW lines up really nice and square, no draw bias feeling or over-exaggerated offset.

Performance wise I would say it leans towards hybrid which I like as I can keep it lower off the tee compared to the 5W. I also feel like I have more control over flight off the ground, and I think that's due to the shorter shaft length.

Distance wise at a 19* UW, I haven't lost much, maybe 5 yards. This is a solid 203-206 yard club in the air for me so it seems and that's fine since my 5W left a bit of a big gap to my 4i.

Looking forward to some more time with it this weekend!

I have to admit, she's a beauty.  Is that the stock RDX black in there?  I only ask because I doubt a 70 gram shaft would work for you knowing how hard you swing.

I have and I hit it in the 19* offering. Launch was about that of my 5 wood but the spin was significantly improved. If you have trouble with spin on a 5 wood, I'd recommend it.

It’s a stock Rdx 70 x flex. If was going to play it I would put a ventus red 9x tipped one inch in it in 19 degree.

This is one I’ve been wanting to test as well — it has some noticeable offset but seems to sit square. Unfortunately lefty demo versions haven’t been around locally so I haven’t hit it yet. Wonder if the King Forged Tec also is large enough that it falls into this category? Cobra’s hybrids tend to be a little longer than average.

I found it to play very neutral and is one of the easiest clubs I've ever hit.  I hit it better than my 4 hybrid.  I don't know what they did, but it pulls together all the best aspects of a FW and hybrid and even with a lighter shaft, you feel you can go after it.

Ok now that head looks really nice from the address position.  I was thinking it was going to be larger but it’s a nice blend between a hybrid and fw.  Wasn’t on the radar but the more and more I see photos and hear people talk about, it has gotten my attention.

Just out of curiosity, why is the Epic Super Hybrid less playable?  Spins too much?  I’ve got the current Super hybrid in the bag and have the Epic Super hybrid coming as a 16*.  Was looking to replace my 3 wood as I’m just having trouble hitting the 3 wood off the deck.  It’s always hit of miss for me to hit FW’s off the deck but have never had a problem with hybrids off the deck.  Current Super Hybrid is at 19* but I have it playing at 41.5.  The new 16* is supposed to be 41.75 I believe and if so I might cut down the 19* to 40.75 and get rid of both the 3 and 5 wood all together.  However this new UW looks like a great cross between the 2.

I'm looking forward to getting one of these and tinkering with it a little.  I have played a 7 wood for the last 4-5 years and it's easily my most versatile club.  Only issue is if I'm playing in windy conditions, it's really hard to flight the ball down and it goes nowhere in the wind.  I hit the 19* with the stock RDX shaft (Only loft available to demo at the PGA store) and the distance was pretty comparable to my 7 wood but more rollout and lower ball flight.  Seemed really easy to hit. Trying to decide if a 17* with a longer shaft might be a 3 wood replacement or if I should look more into a 21* to fill the gap between my 7 wood and my 5 iron.  I have never been able to hit hybrids.

Also, how does it compare to the Epic Speed 7 wood (144cc).  The UW is high launch and both are bonded.

Must be even smaller than the 7 wood.

My SIM2 5 wood is 140cc and is adjustable from 19*.

Seems like alot of duplication in the UW, Super Hybrid, 7 wood sizes.

For me the super hybrid Spins less and launches lower. The UW hits the window I like perfectly. The super hybrid produces very fast ball speeds, it’s amazing at that. But I don’t need that. For me the uw would be a number club. It gets up in the air and then lands softer because of higher spin numbers. I would play the UW at 19.
