What worked for you to stop buying stuff all the time?

Honestly, I think just getting to the point that the clubs in your bag are the best fit for you will naturally ease the need to buy new stuff.

I'm very close to that point now (I hope). Have a new 3-Wood on the way, and once that's here I'm planning on keeping my bag the same until the end of the 2022 season. Obviously easier said than done, but that's the plan anyway. 😬

The more time I have to actually play golf (or even just hit the putting green), the less time I spend on here and the less I think about my equipment. I think a big chunk of my equipment junkie-ness and drive to try new things is finding a connection to golf in periods when I am otherwise too busy to carve out time for actually enjoying the game on the course. I've found over the last 6-9 months that devoting equipment cravings into going deep on golf history or course architecture satisfies the same non-play golf craving I get when I go to the course and surfing the classifieds and Ebay and reading new equipment reviews did.

Damn, this one hits close to home! Have little kids at home and am lucky to get away for a round and a range session a week. I think about golf every day so I think one way I stay connected is by browsing BST stuff and researching clubs while at work or in the evenings.

I always bought stuff with a purpose. Naturally I got to where I was happy with my overall bag setup

Until about 2011, I pretty much "bought with purpose."

I played with the same irons (MacGregor MT flatsole blades - 1971 model) from 1974-1994. I added in MT D-3-4 to mix in 1980 (bought used).

From 1994-2008 I played Pro Tour Black (PTB), component irons based off the Ping Eye2 model with Dynalite Gold S300 shafts, high launch cousin of the Dynamic Golds. PTB was a big custom shop seller in Texas and Oklahoma The perimeter weighting improved GIR and backspin. Also switched to metal wood, also PTB D, 3, 5 w/graphite shaft in driver! Circa 2000 I switched to a Air Zevo driver, and Tour Edge Bazooka 3, 5.

Next switch came in my late 50s, needed to go to lighter, R-flex shafts. Played Callaway X20s for two years, then switched to X20 Tours.

Long story short: since 2008 I have had four drivers, switched fairway woods twice, and have had four iron sets. I was trying to be purposeful, but didn't make any real progress until the last couple of years. Basically, life happened - became executor of family estate, on-job turmoil, physical injuries and just plain age.  I didn't go light enough soon enough, and wasted time trying to self fit.

I think things have stabilized for awhile - see WITB.

I follow you on a lot of posts and feel we're similar in a lot of ways. I've tested almost every iron out there this year and the Srixons we both have are hands down the best I've hit and I've got the same 3W you ordered on the way (albeit mine is a 13.5 rocket 3W) to try and fill a need at the top of the bag.

And while this testing and swapping I've been doing for the last 15 months has been a total blast, I'm also getting a little exhausted with selling and hoping stuff sells and just finding out that I'm generally happy with what I've got.

Hopefully 2022 is a year that we BOTH calm down. Lol. Cheers, man!

Lol my collection of fishing gear and rods dwarfs my golf inventory. Not to mention the boat.

I used to have the boat, but then I took up this drug we all call golf and the boat collected dust.  So I sold the boat, but still have all my bass fishing gear.  I have even added to it in recent years with several more rods and reels, not to mention TONS of lures.  All to go fishing just a few times a year when I get a little burned out on golf.  I do absolutely love to fish, so I think I need to go more this year, especially since my dad isn't getting any younger and he DOES have a bass boat.  His mostly collects dust too, but hopefully we can change that this year.

I tried to get back into fishing 2 years ago.  After 4 trips to my local lake, I lost 4 lures and caught zero fish.  Decided to stick with golf.

Yeah, sounds like we've been on a similar insane journey to find the ideal setup for us. All that buying and selling definitely gets exhausting, and even though I've enjoyed the ride also, I probably spent way too much time and money on it in 2021.

Good luck with settling down in 2022 also man...the Stealth Plus Woods and Srixon irons will hopefully make it much easier to stabilize our bags!! 😎

I catch a ton of fish, and love every second of it.  Unfortunately, my golf addiction gets top priority far too often over other things I like to do.

I agree with those that say play more.   It's rare that I hit a shot and think about how much better it would have been if I had that shiny new club.   For me, those thoughts come up more often during range sessions.

The other thing that's helped is that I never buy clubs without a demo where I'm comparing not only to what else is out there, but also to what I have now.

This is obviously a little tongue in cheek, but what has worked for you? Where you went on a rampage buying stuff then actually, successfully cooled off for a good long time?

When my senior in high school was accepted into a private school for college.  That cooled me down quite a bit, that and finally being happy with my bag, well except my 3 wood, but that is a constant problem.

I bought my boat at the beginning of corona, and I used it a lot at first.  I picked up golf again around September of 20 and it soon became my #1 hobby.  I haven’t used my boat much in 21.
It’s not so much I like golf better than fish, it’s more the time. Even for a 5 hour round, I’m looking at 6 total hours.  Fishing would be 1.5 hr drive to the coast, launch then fish. Then when done I’d have about a 2-2.5 hour drive home, clean fish, clean boat, flush engine and put away gear.  Now it’s slightly easier when I went freshwater, but I don’t get that salt air smell! 😀

Dude, if I lived near the coast, I'd be fishing that saltwater all the time!  I've never done it, but I bet it's a blast.  Much bigger fishies!  That also taste really good!

Sold my boat when they began closing  or making private so many boat ramps around here

Add too many no-wake zones and it just became too much of an ordeal to get to the ocean

My final club related purchase (aside from grips) for quite a while was Wednesday. The wife and I had a great conversation last night about finally leaving NY for North Carolina. The move won't have until later this year, but money is getting socked away and extra clubs will be on the BST.

I've never been so excited about not buying stuff!

Ultrasounds can have that effect.

I'm also completely disinterested in new equipment this year. After waiting 5 months for wedges and getting a new 3w there isn't a whole lot to be excited for.

You are definitely moving to a much better state!  You'll no longer be taxed to death, so you'll have plenty of money after the move to buy more clubs!  Congrats!

I think it was a combination of various events that led to the decline to buying clubs. First, taking lessons was a great start. I found more joy in playing good golf than buying clubs as a distractions. I started working with my instructor to find the right clubs to help my game or fill in gaps.  Second, started to realize that the cost of rebuilding clubs and parts was fun, but costs more in the long run. Finally, my son started playing travel baseball. I mean what 10 year old doesn't need 13 bats to have🤦‍♂️ ?One new bat was a shaft, so in comparison it seems like a deal.

I spent way too much over the past 2 years. One thing that I love to do is try new clubs and hit them on Trackman. Often I would hit the new clubs fantastic and make an impulse buy only to realize they weren't right later. Thankfully I stumbled on this video and it just seemed to reinforce what I knew but didn't want to recognize.

No matter how good we are regression to the mean impacts our perception of our performance. Understanding this has helped me resist falling for the initial good performance of a club.
