Can a legit scratch golfer with an professional athletic background beat a 50 something retired LPGA pro?

I believe they played the same golf course as the ladies. If that is the case Lowe beat or tied 8 of the top 10 players today with his even par around in cold conditions.

We have our answer.  Solid play by Derrick.  18 was a long hole for an older lady today,

 

Based on this, I assume the 4 capper would have finished 10-15 shots behind for the 4 round total.

The issue isn't living well. People in that situation are competitive and continuing to make money is one of the things that keep them going.

Also, living well is relative. The last few frontiers for that tax bracket are: flying private on charters, versus flying private on your own plane, renting a large boat for family vacations, versus owning the large boat for same. Larger or better location homes, etc.

Can't really apply normal people budgets to world class incomes and talents.

I was lucky to go on a trip to Lake Nona in November. There's a guy landing balls with 0 dispersion, right in front of us, from ~320 yards away. We're all floored, thinking: "holy s***, who is that on the other end of the range? Guy must be pretty good!"

Poulter has 2 houses side-by-side at Nona. One has no furniture in it and is instead full of his Ferrari's. A bit gauche for my taste but...also kind of cool.

Yup. Over a four-round tournament, a solid scratch player will get trounced by the best LPGA players. Lowe did manage to beat or tie 5(?) over four rounds, however.

 

And like I mentioned earlier, his 72 today beat or tied the vast majority of players.

Leaderboards are posted. Anybody can now easily go and see if any of the celebs/ams beat any of the pros at the bottom of the pro leaderboard (based on gross score).

The things that amateurs can't compete with the pros is the mental and experience side of the game. The pros are so conditioned to play under pressure, in front of crowds, tournament conditions, always put good numbers up, etc, etc. It is totally different than playing a leisurely rounds with buddies on home course. There is even a stark difference between players with same handicap in which one plays a lot of tournament golf competitively and one that doesn't.

Well- we now have proof that a legit scratch male can indeed compete with some LPGA players from the same tees. Leaders? Obviously not close- but he beat a handful of pros as a part-time amateur golfer.

Same here. Mine will say a 4 but that's only because some days, everything comes together and I can put up a respectable number.

 

Or all the wheels come off and I play like someone who's never swung a club before. I've shot level par and 90 within 48 hours!

Fun watching on television. I was rooting for Anika but kudos to Derek Lowe for the way he played. He hit a lot of solid shots. Way to go for both.

Not sure what conclusions can be made from this past weekend.  But to be fair....the original thread claimed that a 4 would get smoked by the bottom of the barrel LPGA pros...then it morphed to a scratch vs bottom of the barrel LPGA pro.

It's pretty easy to draw conclusions here if you are specific, I think. Legitimate scratch or slightly below players can, indeed, hang with the ladies on a one round basis. But they ladies are just too skilled and too consistent to be beaten over four rounds with the exception of those that are at the bottom third of a tournament, and then only if the scratch has a good four round stretch.

 

It's not like these are the only examples we have a legitimate scratch players playing against the ladies.
