How Brooke Henderson solved her driver conundrum after 48-inch ban

By Jason Daniels

Today sees the start of the first women’s major of the year, and one of the most consistent players has had to adjust in an attempt to better a tied-second in 2020.

Brooke Henderson comes to the Chevron Championship in fine form, with four top six finishes in five starts – 11th in the other – and a similar event record, a joint runner-up the best of seven cuts from seven starts.

However, for a player that relies heavily on the big stick, the new ruling on the length of a driver has deprived her of being able to use the club she feels most comfortable with.

Back on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course, the 24-year-old will attempt to keep her great course form running with a 46-inch driver rather than the usual 48.

The one-time major champion isn’t pessimistic about the change though:

“Gripping it at the end, which is also another big adjustment. It’s been good. I’m looking forward to hopefully hitting it well this week and putting myself back in contention. It’s definitely been a big process starting last year when the announcement kind of came out that there was going to be the rule change.”

She continued:

“I went through a lot of different shafts and weights, etcetera, etcetera, but was able to, I guess early January late December, to pick one that I have in the bag this week that I felt was going to be the right club. I definitely miss my 48 driver, but this one, it’s good. I think as I get used to the timing and the rhythm of it, I’ll be able to gain back some of the distance that I lost. It’s just a little bit of an adjustment now, but moving forward I think it’ll be good.”

The Canadian has had assistance from her club manufacturer, Ping, who have added more weight in the grip to help her feel as if, “I was choking up on the 48.”

Brooke has long been known for her ability to find plenty of greens in regulation, mainly through distance off the tee. She ranked ninth for driving distance in 2021 leading to a ranking of fourth in GIR, whilst in the current year she is 10th and ninth for the same.

Once fully used to the new club, expect even better.

Like Jerry I can't really give a grade on the driver, she couldn't hit a fairway on the front 9 then almost hit them all on the back (missed on hole 1&2).  Which I'll be honest, she would do regularly enough with 48" lol.  I'll say her consistency and ability hit it flush isn't quite where she would want I think.  Statistically Lydia was hitting it further then Brooke and even at the start of the broadcast Lydia was out driving Brooke the first few hole we saw.  But on 6-7, Brooke caught her drives and drove it 25 yards past Lydia, so I think the timing and sync are still a work in progress.  I actually think being forced to make the changes could be better in the long run and I would recommend making the change throughout the bag next week to grip all her clubs conventionally, if she does it now, it should be comfortable enough to workout for the US open and the KPMG

I think is royally sucks they're moving this event. When I heard it a couple weeks ago on Sirius I was like "WHAT". Couldn't believe such an iconic location and one so memorable in the history of LPGA golf was moving. It's a bloody shame.

So what if the course isn't as challenging as some think it should be. They could always make changes, grow rough, lengthen, etc. Such a rich tradition shouldn't be tossed aside like this one. It's probably the first ever LPGA event I watched many years ago.

That said the top of the leaderboard looks GREAT. Love seeing those names up there. Looking forward to the rest of the tourney. I'll watch more of it than Valero.

Perhaps, but considering they needed a Japanese airline to sponsor the event for the last how many years, exactly who was going to pony up to keep the event there?  We can clutch pearls all we want, but if no one is ponying up to keep it there, those who do have the right to have it moved closer to their locale.

And before anyone tries to go down that road, the fact the airline is Japanese only matters in the fact they are much more likely to want to keep sponsoring something in their homeland, as opposed to an ocean away, if a time comes when decisions need to be made.  From an event's point of view,  a more local sponsor is more likely to be a longer term partner.

Rest assured, you want more money in the professional game.  That's what grows the pool of potential players.  There's only one golf course that might be able to do that, and Mission Hills isn't it.

And the pond thing jumped the shark when they built a purpose-built tank and a bunch of people go jumping in.  A prime example of marketers taking something, and deciding to wreck it by running it to the max and killing any charm.

Isn't there lift and place on several holes?

Maybe they should cut that out and play proper golf, that might allow the course to play tougher (or as it should).

Well Chevron is HQ'd in California but Asian companies from outside want it where Chevron is from, strange lol  Or is simply foreshadowing the realistic trend of everyone from Cali moving to Texas, someone check and see if Chevron rented some moving trucks lol

It honestly has very little (see nothing) to do with the course. It’s the location. Chevron has a huge work force in the Houston area. So they moved their new toy to where they can, in their opinion, best take advantage of it. Which is their right since they are flipping the bill. But still a total shame IMO nonetheless.

I'm shocked their HQ is in California.  What on earth are they thinking?  Thanks for clarifying.  But I am certain the presence in Cali, c-suite or not, pales in comparison to Houston.

Those Asian companies had their opportunity to pony up though, and they didn't.

Like I said yesterday. I’m a 5 minute drive from their HQ. I’ll definitely know if they are headed East and will report 😉 Also, while I’m there (going today) complaining about moving the tournament, I’ll ask for @golfortennis”what on earth they were thinking” being here in the first place!
