Mito had a 1-shot lead on a 490yd uphill par 4. His swing didn't look great but hitting driver is very defensible.

Van De Velda’s shot doesn’t hit the pin high post he wins. Mito’s was just a hard hole.

I agree his second shot was probably the unluckiest break in the history of golf. But I just mean he could have played that hole 100 different ways.

If his tee shot had not got lucky I would agree it was a bit of a choke.  Then those other ways of playing the hole come into play.  He did what he needed to do with the second and got hosed (as you stated).

I’m going Phil.  Phil was doing Phil things, but he has no self control/awareness at times.  I thought Van De Velde was harder to watch.

Van de Velde, he could have played the hole with just a 7 iron and won. I think someone did it with a putter and walked off with a 1 stroke lead.

Van De Velde made par with just a putter a few years after as part of a promotional video. Say what you want about Van De Velde, but he handled his defeat very graciously

At least he didn't win the tournament, then sign for a wrong number and then lose.

 

Seemed to rush up there and hit it.  And the caddy should have handed him a 3wd and walked away.  Two unforced errors on the same shot.  It's gonna take a lot of Tequila to wash that away.

Mito lost this tournament, but I wouldn’t put his choke on the level of Phil and Van de Velde.  For my money, the Van de Velde was the all-time greatest choke job.  I still remember everything about that to this day.  At least we all knew Phil would earn other chances.

Given the circumstances Phil's was the worst IMO. Phil was going for 3 straight majors. Imagine the hype going into the 2006 Open Championship if Phil somehow pulled that off. Jean still had a chance to win in the playoff btw

Actually a 6 on his 3rd attempt, but close enough.  And yes, very gracious.

I think the biggest failure with Mito was his chip!   He just needed to get up and down to go into the playoff!
