Ping i230 irons - 2022 The Open Championship @ St Andrews Old Course

They are less offset than i210, early reports say.  What ping irons were you loyal to? Blueprints?

I grew up playing the Eye 2s up until three years ago. Decided it was time for a long overdue upgrade. I have the i210s 4/5 and Blueprints 6-PW. I think the picture was just at a bad angle, maybe. I bet they look pure in person looking down at them. Looking forward to hitting them!

Legitimate question.  They are replacing arguably the most successful Ping iron since the Eye2.  A club that looks pretty good, allows you to miss from just outside the hosel all the way to the end of the grooves and still have a playable result and  that launches well for non-WRX swingspeed without ballooning for Tour players.

What kind of additional revolutionary tech do they need - to be able to clean your ball and give you a reach around?

I expect the improvements to be modest. But that's the time period we are living in. There's only so much you can do with an iron without giving up feel (i.e. hollow and/or thin made out of super hard materials). They do look great though IMO.

One of the salient features of the recent I-series clubs, leading to their characteristic feel, has been the CTP behind the sweet spot.  The CTP went away with the newer designs, replaced by hosel weights and toe screws to adjust swingweight, though, just like it appears these do.  I wonder if there is something fancy going on with the cavity badge in order to damp vibration?  Without some feature to improve feel, these will play like an old fashion solid body stainless iron.

Recognize you are a proud G-man.  Have you hit the i210?  I owned a set briefly.  Nice clubs - excellent performance - especially in the mid irons.  My only complaint is that in driving toward better sound and feel they muted the feedback too much.  IMO, the replacement would be best served by returning to a smidge more feedback.

Thanks for posting this.  The iron in the diagram is slightly different from this new i230, though.  No toe screw, and the face looks thin, like a spring face iron.  I'm looking forward to Ping releasing more information.

My opinion is same as yours; the feel was almost too muted on center strikes.  Unfortunately, I can't hit the center often enough...thus my draw towards the G. 🤨

We're on different paths to the same destination.  I keep playing "players CBs" in clubs that are short enough or have enough loft that I can reliably find the center and hit them high enough.  Recently switched to G425 hybrids because they go as low as 7 hyb and my 6i and 7i have been served notice they best not misbehave...

As a Ping diehard, I'll say they look really nice.   However, all I see is a basic cavity back style that has already been ran by other mfgs over the years.   They threw a plastic/elastomer insert in the cavity for feel/sound/looks, and a screw that maybe gains a couple of grams to put out on the toe?  I think all of the engineering went into the I59 and the I230 was an afterthought that was quickly put together to please the Ping faithful looking for another product release.  For what they are going to charge for these, I guess was hoping for something a little more revolutionary and outside the norm.  I will for sure give these a test, but, I am not expecting a "wow these are incredible" reaction.  I really hope I am wrong.

Youve basically described every club launch from every oem

- Something that continues to go long off the tee in the fairway
- Something that is a fairway finder when needed and long
- Something that high, consistent and helps with par 5’s
-  Something to help with long par3’s and short par 4’s

-  Something metal, lots of them and go the gaps I need
- Something metal, 2x of them and helps me 120y and in
- Putters - limited rotation because I cannot afford misses

What handicap range would these fit? Pings numbering confuses me lol

I think these would be propriety from about a 23 or lower, well below scratch.

Why did I have to read thru 2 pages of dirt-in-a-screw arguments before getting to people's actual opinions on these?

Cinks WITB does these better justice. Ping always seem to have a touch more offset than similar Mizuno or Titleist, but the WITB doesnt look nearly as bad as the pics in this thread. Guess just have to wait to see in person.

There’re many reasons someone could be a high higher handicap. I wouldn't subject it to a specific number , but rather are you a decent ball striker with your irons now , one that could stand growth with something more demanding if playing game improvement irons.

Thought more about the pros and cons of these after dissecting the pics.

Not sure I like that badge on the back (same goes for the ZX5 I have) and how water and debris can get in there. At least these i230s have a less busy badge compared to the ZX5, but that gap worries me.

As someone else pointed out, it looks like there is no traditional "toaster" CTP. Looks like a full badge to me with no port that goes down low in the back.

What would be interesting is if these actually have a rod that goes in where the toe screw is and runs parallel to the sole.

I can see a time in the not too distant future that this type of tech will feature in most OEM releases...

0-25. You're welcome. 😆

Serious answer, handicap ranges are one of the poorer criteria to classify irons by, and this is especially true for PING a lot of the time. Even their smaller players irons are often quite high MOI and very forgiving. The iBlade for example is more forgiving than a vast majority of other company's irons, including their supposed "game improvement" ones.

Couldn't agree more.  I know a 16 handicap who plays MP-4 blades. And Shane Bertsch on the PGA Tour played G-irons back when I used to play with him.  Now I think he has Hot Metals.
