Has your opinion on music on the course changed?

Recommended Posts

I’ve relented. When this all started I was a hard NO, never, absolutely not, under any circumstances.

I’ve realized there is no way to un-ring the bell on this issue. Music on the course is here to stay. Many newer golf carts have speakers built in to stream your jams. So I’ve played a few rounds, never during prime time, where I’ve put on some Dead & Company. Enjoyed the round just as much as I did in silence.

All the common sense politeness issues (will not rehash all of them here) have not, and will not get any better. We all know that how people handle music on here is NOT what happens out there.

Think i skew younger than most on here (in my 20s), but I've never really minded it.

That said, I play with some combo of the same 6-8 guys and know I'll generally like what they put it on and know we're not blasting it for the whole course to hear

I play solo most of the time and listen to music, but I wear earbuds.  I don't need to subject everyone else to my music tastes.

I tend to block it out, so it doesn't bother me when I'm playing a shot.

But the concept, no, never did like it and never will.

Why is your music OK, let me pick your playlist. Sometimes I feel I should set up a punk rock play list on my phone and blast it loud during the whole round to drown out the crappy music I hear out there all the time that they call "modern country".  For God's sakes, if you are going to play country music, at least play good country music.....  I feel like I every time a new song comes on I should go over and do this bit

When people first started listening to music on the course, I didn't really mind, while the purists obviously found this an affront to the game. It was something different, delivered a different vibe and, while I still enjoyed rounds without music, it was fine.

Now that this trend has been going on for the last 8-10 years, it just irritates the piss out of me.  Playing with a lot of the same guys it's just the same stupid playlists - mostly country songs - over and over again.

I just want to go back to rounds only filled with the sounds of golf shots, nature, and conversation!

/rant

This reminded me of something....

Got roped into playing a 2-man scramble recently and the other twosome had bro country going all 18 holes. I swear every single song sounded the same.

So at one point on the back nine my p!aying partner says " WTH bud, Shania Twain and Carrie Underwood not cool enough for you ?" lol

Yes.

I did hate the idea.

Now i expect anyone playing music on a course to not only be annoying but a douchebag as well.  This based on an interaction last week where riding to my ball a guy from the adjacent hole is standing next to my ball with a club in his hand.  As we get within about 15 yards he says 'oh are you playing a callaway?'.  Um yes.  Hard to hear him over the awful mumble rap he's playing on a speaker stuck to the cart.  My partner looks at him with disgust and says 'what the hell are you listening to?'.  Guy is like huh?  oh it's my buddies playlist.

So then this guy hops in his cart and moves 30 yards up the fairway to my buddies ball.  Gets out of the cart, grabs a club and stands by it.  My buddy rolls up after dropping me and i s*** you not this clown says 'oh are you playing a Titleist?'.

Arse-hole.

I don’t have a preference. If I’m solo I’ll usually play some but never loud enough to hear unless you’re right up on the cart and I don’t carry a speaker so blaring music isn’t an option. When I play with randoms and they want to play something I don’t mind. I play a pretty busy course and it’s probably 50/50 the groups that play music vs the ones that don’t. I’ve never noticed it being a problem or thought that someone had it up too loud.

I probably hear music on the course in person ( like, outside of LIV events) maybe 1-2 times a year at most. It's not a major issue to me

If i heard it all the time and it was same music i didn't enjoy, it would probably bother me

I do not blast music ever in a group.  I do play it when I walk.  Feels nice to have it on while walking the fairways.   But, I absolutely do not want to listen to your garbage modern pop country lol.  IF you're going to play music, at least think about the people you are playing with.  Even go, "Hey is this ok with you guys"

I play with fellow seniors in a 55+ community.  You’d be surprised how many of them have music playing in their carts.  And we are required to ride 2 to a cart for less wear on the course.

No one blasts it, though.  And some guys definitely don’t like to hear it while they are playing in the group.  In these circumstances, I’ve been okay with it.

Music I’ll listen to on the course:

Dead & Co., Grateful Dead, Allman Bros., etc.

Bob (any song that’s not on “Legend”), Peter Tosh, Burning Spear

King George, Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash, Randy Travis, etc.

Tribe Called Quest, De la Soul, Rakim, etc.

I never play it during prime time and never bring it up unless I’m playing solo or playing with people I already know well who share the same tastes.

To each his own, but don't make me listen to your music if I am not in your group.  In my own group, one speaker kept low enough so that you can't hear it 20 yards away or around other groups.  Dueling speakers are the worst.

Someone in this thread will say that they can hear every speaker on property.  There are those of us that are considerate.  Yes we are playing music, and no, you can't hear it.

Pretty much how I feel. At first I was against it but did it a few times and it's not bad especially solo rounds.

At first I was against it. I learned to tolerate it especially in our Saturday Shootouts which is more or less a social party atmosphere.

Now I started our Men's League in April this year. Some guys like it and some do not. Most of the guys are like me and my age and play 60s 70s 80s rock. We do have only one speaker per group and do not blast it. We do have a couple of sour pusses who do not like it so they sorta stay in their little bubble. But yes everyone is considerate really a good group of guys. When I first started guys asked if the music bothered me? Naah I told them play on. After all I told them all of us are old farts and are not going to try to play on the PGA tour or even enter serious stipulated Am events and are having fun and I feel it is a part of the fun in course with consideration and moderation

I don't normally like music on the course, but any A Tribe Called Quest/De la Soul or modern jazzy downtempo groups like Bonobo/Nightmares on Wax are fine by me. The music has a way of receding into the background; it's the same reason I can listen to it working/studying.

Unlike some annoying "Modern Country" crap which is bland and whiny.  It's also the types of people who listen to that crap: they tend to be "bro golfers" and often not good partners.

I love having music while golfing, and always have since Bluetooth became a thing, classic rock usually.

For our men’s beer league, it’s a no brainer to play some tunes and have fun, I usually am the guy with the speaker and I ask our opponents what they want to hear and find a playlist to match it.

Paired up with a random twosome on a weekend I’ll wait for a few holes and feel them out, if they are not a couple sticks in the mud I’ll ask if they mind some low volume music, 9 out of 10 are fine with it.

A charity scramble, tunes are on in the parking lot, anyone in the foursome can connect if they want to mix it up.

it comes down to reading the room.
