What Golf Habit Do You Find Most Annoying?

Recommended Posts

Reading putts from 3 sides , setting the ball down , lining it up with the shaft , adjusting the ball again , lining it up with the shaft again.  Stepping back reading it for a 4th time - then missing the hole and doing it all over again on the 3 footer coming back.  This isn't the masters my guy - hit the putt jesus christ.

Players who take 4 practice swings then back off and look at there target only to get back in their swing again only to take two more practice swings before actually hitting the ball.

Most annoying thing on a golf course? The golf swing. 🤣

Seriously, now and then you come across a player who's swing is just gruesome to watch.

The guy who finishes with his weight so far on the back foot he almost topples over. (Never stand anywhere behind this person.)

The guy with a stance so wide he looks like he's a Sumo wrestler setting his feet, or like he's about to take a crap (or is a Congressman what would be arrested in a public bathroom stall).

The ex baseball player who's swing looks like he's going after a low and outside sinking curve ball on every shot.

The poser that holds the "finish pose" for five seconds after every shot as though a Golf Digest photographer might be secretly watching in the bushes (even if he just seriously topped the ball and it went all of four yards).

The quick swinging epileptic who's stroke looks so chaotic you're wondering if he's having a seizure of some kind.

The dude who just signed on with "Coach YouTube", clearly watched about 27 instructional videos that morning alone (from multiple instructors giving completely contradictory advice), stands over the ball for about a full minute, his head so full of swing thoughts they are almost visibly oozing out if his ears, before finally producing a swing that would horrify all 27 instructors.

Mr. "over-corrector", with a bizarrely outside-in swing, who clearly has completely given up on fixing it, and just lines up pointing 45* left on every tee box (assuming his wicked slice will make it back somewhere approximately close to the fairway). Humorously enough, usually once or twice a round he'll accidentally actually swing correctly, putting the people on the adjoining fairway at serious risk.

There's a bunch more, but really, when you think about it, the golf swing is a kind of weird thing to look at even when the best in the world do it. And it only goes downhill from there.

(Sometimes you just gotta laugh. I've probably been all of those guys at some point or another in the last 50 years.)

Post round "woulda coulda shouldas". Fine to briefly mention, but beyond brief mention I cannot stand droning on about how you should have finished 5 shots better

I do this after every round ... but in my mind, not out loud. Because like you said, nobody else really cares to hear about it!

I have never been one to pay much attention to the idiosyncrasies of others.  Generally, I am calm and even tempered, seldom raise my voice yet fully aware of my surrounding.

What amazes me is all the little things that others get their panties in a wad over, yet they have NO control over said things.  The only behavior that gets my attention is when someone infringes on my surroundings with anger, throwing clubs, or hollering, over his stinky game.  I won't say much, just "you need to chill."  Golf is a game, and your behavior impacts others.

I let it go until it scares people around me; then my demeanor changes to not nice.  What happens then depends on the azz wipe...

99.9% of the above.

People that park their power cart in front of the green when they get off to chip and putt, then, when finished the hole, have to walk back to their cart and carefully replace their clubs in their bags before driving past where they should have parked the cart in the first place - on the path (4 wheels on) beside the green on the way to the next tee.

Luckily I haven't really had to deal with the disgusting stuff like sunflower seeds or spit that some have mentioned. Someone mentioned guy obsessed about slow play, then plays slowly. Had that happen to me earlier this year, had a 2some barge in front of my foursome even though there was no room, they then proceeded to play very nonchalantly. Yeah, they were waiting on every hole too, it's just that they barged ahead, then played the way they did.

I can't generally disagree with the initial list. It's got the usual suspects covered.

But, my personal one is any golfer who feels the need to constantly have a towel. Particularly the guy who has the dish towel hanging out of the back pocket or off their belt.

It seems a rough equivalent of wearing a t-shirt that says: "Hi, I'm a giant douchebag and it's gonna be a long afternoon."

Maybe I’m that guy but it seems crazy to putt without wiping your ball off.  It is so sandy where I play that it just makes sense…first time I’ve read one of these lists and found myself on it lol

Some like to follow the handicapping rules.

Agreed, but not when putting for a nine, or don’t even carry a handicap, or it’s match play and it’s been given, or when liberties have been taken all over the course like foot wedge, rolling the ball out of divots , retaking a shot and not counting it, the list goes on…..

yeah, especially with the max strokes allowed on a hole for handicapping purposes. I'm all about finishing the hole, but when you're lying 6 in a bunker on a Par 4, PICK IT UP, and come tend the flag.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Would agree most of the time, however I've played courses, and more specifically, certain holes, where the closest place to the green (while following cart signage, etc) is in front of the green, and it wouldn't make sense to have a player drive all the way over to the path then walk back, rather than just get out and finish the hole.

How about when a guy takes a practice swing directly at you?  I would never swing in someone's direction from a few feet away but there's a lot who don't even think about it.

Ah ha. A couple buddies and I got hooked up with current Padres player long ago. I won’t name any names but the ballplayer was a super cool guy. One of my buddies took a practice swing and peppered the poor pro with dirt and grass. My buddy felt like a  d’bag, but the pro was totally cool about it.

As to the op, I usually fix 3-5 ball marks per hole every round. I play fast so that not a big deal but it’s annoying to see greens so f’ed up.

My biggest golf cringe is the hats off handshake after the round. Hat off, fine. Handshake, welcome and appreciated. Wipe the top of your sweaty head with your right hand just before your offer the shake? Come on man!
