I hit a blade today and I liked it

Recommended Posts

Quick background... I’ve been away from golf for a hot minute or at least a few years. At my best I was around a 16-18 handicap and I’ve always played the ping G series irons.

i have been back practicing and making great contact with the ball. I’ve always loved the look of blades so I bought a single ping blueprint 7 iron to try out and to practice with. Today I took her out for her maiden voyage.

by the end of my practice session all I could say is wow. You can feel a pure strike, and when you do that feeling was addicting.

am I rushing out to buy a full set, no. But I won’t lie and tell you I don’t want to.. I literally could of spent all day hitting the same shot with how good it felt and the way the ball moved. I now understand what everyone talks about with a forged club

thanks for reading, the dog, kids, and wife didn’t seem to interested when I shared my excitement. So I needed to tell someone

Wait till you see how good a whole set of blades look in your bag, you'll spend the rest of your golfing career convincing yourself that blades really aren't that hard to hit anyway and that everyone else is wrong about them......

If hitting the Ping G's are the equivalent of dating the hottest girl in school, puring a blade is like dating Gal Gadot. Just sayin'

Well you are going to "pure" one way more than the other. So might want to factor that in, especially if you're someone who wants to pure things on the reg

LOL! The OP has been around here long enough to know how this turns out.

All of us have been there at some point. If you didn't grow up playing blades, you think they are some type of magical stick that requires a PGA level swing to get a good result. Then you swing one on a flat range from a perfect lie and realize they are just another club. And they feel pretty darn good too.

And you remember all those comments about modern day blades being so forgiving. And you start kicking around the idea of gaming a set just to see. Then you post something on WRX hoping for some confirmation. You'll be encouraged by those who say 'blades are no big deal', you'll wave off people who have horror stories.

As someone said, it's all about 'you doing you'. They are absolutely really fun to hit. And while they are not mother-in-law unforgiving, they aren't super difficult to play. It's all about what you enjoy and how it impacts YOUR game.

Had the same experience w/ the MP-5 a few years ago. Hit the 6i after a lesson (indoors, GolfTec, 10ish cap) and was dropping one ball on top of the last. Didn't have the rocks to buy a set, though.

Every now and then I'll undress a set on eBay or 2ndSwing, but can't bring myself to make a $500 mistake.

This itch will never get scratched until you buy a set and get it out of your system. They look great in the bag and when you do manage to play well with them, they boost your ego, but when you have a bad round, you'll blame the clubs, not yourself, and they'll be gone...................but you have to go through this yourself.........we can't tell you.

You may not want to fork out for a full set of Ping Blueprints rightaway but go hunt down some cheap second hand blades. I'm sure you could pick up some old classics for about $200. Search your feelings, you know this to be true.

Hitting off mats might mask some things in my opinion: 1) a little fat on a mat is generally ok, but off soft turf conditions can be very penal. 2) uneven ground conditions may make it harder to make pure contact.

I'm in basically in the same boat. I have MP-4s with shafts appropriate for my game (XP105 R300) that I bought late last season. I shot 43,47,48,44,47 with them as the season ended and I normally shoot 45-46. There was very little difference versus "more forgiving" clubs. What I'm worried about though is what happens if I'm in my work league and full blown wheels fall off happens?

I may waffle some more and end up using them this season, but right now I'm planning to go to G15s that I've had for a very long time. I used 716 AP2s for most of last year and ended up flipping them as the DG AMT shafts were too heavy.

Few things with blades/players irons in general is that most are forged; they're softer metals and are built for response. Besides the certain aspects of the game one of the largest differences between your mid-teen handicapper and the single digit handicapper when it comes to iron play is the ability create shots. However, the ability to create shots and work the golf ball is not what a game improvement was intended to do.

Personally, I use to play blade irons, practice daily, played almost every day and wasn't an adult. Now-a-days, I play as much as I can during the weekend but I don't play blades. You can have the feel of a players iron with a little forgiveness by playing a cavity back style iron. Right now, I play the MP59 by Mizuno and I absolutely love them! I believe an iron in that similar of category would give you a little more forgiveness without sacrificing the feel of a blade. (Basically, buy anything that says, "forged.")

Also, do you yourself a favor: get fitted. Shafts are the most important part of the club. The club head with a proper fitting shaft will do wonders for your golf game!
