Payne Stewart and Steve Elkington. Had the pleasure of seeing an talking with Payne in the early 90's at the New England Classic, he was a very nice man with a very classic swing.

There are going to be a lot of wonderful answers to this question. Good answers, featuring some of golf's most beautiful, admirable swings. You see it in the responses already posted.

But with all due respect, I think that anyone on this board now, who is barely old enough to have seen Sam Snead play at a time when he was not yet well into his sixties; that is the one, pure, shining example. If you aren't old enough to have seen that, then sincere congratulations on your youth and more power to you. For anyone old enough (born, say, before 1960; maybe a bit earlier since Sam turned 60 in 1972) I have the feeling that "Sam Snead" is the almost-universal answer to this question, even for folks who were (rightful) admirers of Hogan, Nelson, Gardner Dickinson, Al Geiberger, Tom Weiskopf, and even the great Bobby Jones. Snead is the smoothest, most perfectly rhythmic swing I have ever seen and there's almost no second place.

I'm going to second this. Incredible grace through the bag, and very powerful without any apparent effort.

I second this. I saw Sam Snead in the late 1960's when I was a child and even now I remember how smooth it was. I saw him again hitting balls at an exhibition when he was was into his 80's and it was still very impressive.

Yes, saw him at Westechester, mid 1970s, smooth as the breeze.

I do normally see the Scandinavian European Tour event when it comes to the Stockholm area. This year it does not do that unfortunately, but I have told the guys in the Gothenburg area to go see Raphael Jacquelin if they actually go to the course, he will be on the tournament this year. Jacquelins swing looks smooth on TV, but seeing it live is by far the most enjoyable swing I have seen live. Totally effortless but when you're there you see the power that casual movement produces. A pornographic type of experience to see that guy swing a golf club.

Your experiences of really smooth swings on course?

http://youtu.be/Iq9tvhyPSkY

Repeated driver swings of Raphael Jacquelin.

So smooth!

Holy $hiznit...I need to go clean up. That sound and that swing is so buttery soft and smooooooth. Hankshank you are right...that was a bit pornographic

I would have to say Louis Oostehuize (sp?). He was paired with a guy I grew up with at the Houston Open (Roland Thatcher) many years ago pre Open Championship win and I remember thinking Holy hell this guy has the simplest most rhythmic swing I've seen. beautiful, Hell it was gorgeous when he Hooked it 40 yards into the water off the tee on hole 5

I was lucky to be the "standard bearer" (you carry the sign that says who's winning the match and are inside the ropes) for the David Toms vs. Phil Mickelson match at the 2005 match play championship at La Costa.

Mickelson's swing is obviously nice, but Tom's has that buttery action and he was really on that week:

"I can't explain why I felt like I did all week," Toms said. "I just felt very, very comfortable with myself and the golf that was in front of me. I don't know that I've ever really felt like that."

Toms ended up winning and I wish I remembered more of the round. I only remember bits and pieces but it was a cool experience.
