Gary Player is just the best

Have read on WRX some stories about Gary and some of his actions and how he won the Open Championship. Having read about this I lost respect for him.

Google Gary Player golf cheat, interesting reading.

As stated in this thread, The original FIGJAM.

If you're going back to 1974 to point out one small event in a storied career by one heck of a good golfer then we must consider the invisible man paradox that was also rooted in 1974. People think, wow, cool, neat, it would be great to be invisible but they oversee one very important setback to being invisible - transparent retinas would render you blind.

Being invisible or a pro golfer isn't all it's cracked up to be.

That's today's lesson.

I think the video shows him to be a gentleman and a nice guy who has promoted the game of golf around the world and stressed the importance of good physical fitness.

I'll leave the negative comments to all you glass house dwellers.

Not a day goes by that I don't learn something new here.

For the record, I am a big Gary Player fan & have always found him to be a very inspirational figure. I just could not resist the Prancercise post above.

Nice video. Guy is in amazing shape for an 82 year old. He has also always been a great ambassador for the game of golf.

lost respect even though they are unconfirmed?? seems a bit hasty. the whole "tamping down with a fairway wood" is something every pro player does. Just watch how many walk down the fairway with driver in hand after they miss the fairway. then watch how many do it if they hit the fairway.

Watching him at the Drive, Chip and Putt this year handing out some awards...Gary seems like a creepy old man to be honest.

Tell me how that differentiates from other men his age helping out in junior sports. Was he actually being creepy or just looking so in your books

The guy is a lot of things as been stated. He's been very positive and helpful with junior golf though, in the right ways.

Frankly you got a lot of nerve even implying anything creepy about Player, someone who I've never seen anything said in the vein you're implying.

Especially given the PROVEN creepy not-so-old man you have in your avatar.

PROVEN to be guilty of pretty dishonorable behavior.

  • 2 years later...

he doesn't get enough respect for his 9 majors

it's sad he was near bankruptcy not long ago and was going to sell major trophies and then the tour stepped in

I feel sorry for the second best player in Argentina at the time!

It's hard to quantify best golfer because of the travel factor. Gary Player regrets not being a better father because of his golf career.

I'm sure some bright spark would be able to factor in strength of field, distance from home, support from fans, regularity of play etc. etc. I'm not an expert on the world golf rankings but do they take any of these things into account?

The most amazing thing about Hogan for me was 1 British Open played, 1 British Open won. Proved his point. How many more could he have won?

Some of the reasons I think Americans dominate golf are, large population, sport is accessible for most, most of the money, most of the tournaments, very little travel, familiar with conditions and baseball. Baseball is awesome for teaching someone how to spin on the spot, load an implement and hit a ball as far as possible.

Technically, you could say the same about Canada and hockey. Canada produces some great golfers but certainly not at the clip some other countries do. We also are blessed with several areas of the country that are very weather friendly which is a huge benefit.

Well for starters we are 10% of the population of the USA .. spread over a larger land mass

A big chunk of our country only has a 5-6 month golf season. Not sure what percentage of the US population has a 12 month golf season ?? Anyone?

Plus kids are generally put into hockey and soccer and skiing first. Baseball and US football and basketball (Raptors may change that) are secondary .. golf, swimming, and lacrosse and some others are far down the list

Didn't we have 6+ players on the tour not that long ago at one time? DeLaet, Hadwin, Conners, Sloan, Taylor, Hughes, Silverman, Svensson and Hearn

Seems like a high percentage out of 125 - 150. It hasn't always been that way. It was only smooth George Knudson for a while and then Mikey Weir.
