$300 putters

Was browsing the GG web site and noticed there are MANY $300 putters. Seems a bit pricey. Do you make more putts or they just feel and look good?

I think they're worth it, and I think we're seeing the same thing in Driver prices, fairways, and shoot even hybrids.

I also think there are a ton of putters that are way less that work great too

I buy in CAD so it's hard to find much under 300$ these days , unless you are getting an anser style head without a lot of insert tech or that isn't milled. I've used these in the past and did OK with them

I actually don't mind spending for a putter, i tend to keep them a long time (4-5 seasons, that's long for me) and you use them 30 times a round so you get your money's worth. So their value for the money is way higher than a driver for example

I like big heavy putters, often long shafted counterbalanced ones. Unfortunately those are never cheap unless you buy used

I’m no expert but there is never going to be a formula that comes out where a $300 putter makes so many more putts than a $100 putter that it is worth it only because of that. Doesn’t mean they are not worth it though. Confidence is everything. And enjoying equipment is part of the hobby for many of us. I’m currently using a spider tour that I paid like $100 for and really like it. But if I lose confidence or want to try something different, maybe the next one will cost $300ish. Maybe not. So the answer to your question about “is it worth it?”. That answer is so personal that it is impossible to answer. It won’t turn a bad putter into a good putter, or make a good putter make everything they see. Hard to quantify exactly how many strokes it will save you (if any). But if you can afford it, and it brings you enjoyment, then it is well worth it...

I paid $300 for my Scotty in 1996. (Actually $275)

It was a lot of money back then, and I tried every putter in the store before bringing it home. It's still in my bag today.

Not to get into the business weeds, but it’s not what it costs to make, it’s what people are willing to pay...

there is a decently competitive “value” putter market, Tommy armour and Wilson both make well regarded, less expensive putters.

im more willing to spend the money on the “right” putter as they don’t wear out and I rarely replace them.

at the end of the day the market has settled on $300 as the cost of a premium putter... if you want 80% of putter options on the table, you might have to spend that to get your best fit.

if cost is your #1 priority, there are still good options... if the best fit is your goal, be prepared to spend the money.

Putters to me are more like cars. They're only as good as the person using it. You can get to point A to point B in the lap of luxury or in the most Spartan of conditions.

That's why I buy used. I picked up my Bettinardi for a little over $200 and it's mint.

My current #1 is a Cobra model 88, $10.00

my current #2 Maxfli Tad Moore TM-7, $15.00

both are sexy af, both are milled. I pushed new deep V lamkins on them and have a bunch of cash in my pocket.

I like old putters though. I also like not playing the same thing everyone else does.

i’ve never made more long putts than with the Cobra. It just works, for me.

If you’re buying “art” or “boutique” putters, well, if you can afford it rock on.

no you are not going to make putts just because it is pricey. they could engineer the same balancing with cheaper material and results would be the same... using better materials and perfect balancing of the putter is where the expense comes...not to mention the buyer....willing to pay 100s of dollars for the sweet feel.

Putter pricing is based on what the market decides.

 

I will say that i don't mind their pricing. Better made putters should cost more. Gob look at the finish or weight on a $50 putter at Walmart or target and then look at the finish on a $400 bettinardi or scotty. The weight on cheap putters are all over the map. They cheap putters may not even be milled. They may be made from some cheap pot metal. Their feel will suffer because of this.

Does that mean you make more putts? Honestly, it helps.

I've owned a 300 dollar scotty for 20 years so it was worth the investment. Found a putter that I loved the look and feel of and haven't changed.

My anser 2 is the vault line and it was around that. Feels great. I think what it was for me is I liked the feel, the fitting showed it was right for my stroke and I like the way it looks.

As far as performance? Yeah, I'm a bit better but it was the fitting IMO not the putter. I paid for the feel and the look, not the performance.

A few things: Expensive putters, especially when you get up to the 400+ range, are not just clubs but pieces of fine craftsmanship and art. People don’t mind paying for the type of quality and time that goes into a Byron, Scotty, Betti, Lajosi, etc.

The other thing, is putters that are well taken care of will last a lifetime. There’s a reason it’s the oldest club in all of these pros bags. Paying 500$ for a club you love, make putts with, and will have in the bag for 15 years is a much better investment than going and dropping that on the newest driver that you will be replacing in a year or two

If price is a concern on a putter or any club for that matter....go to the golf shop and try out everything you are interested in until you find one that stands out to you. Then look for a used one of that model (or a similiar previous model) in the future.

It's funny, 5 years ago when it was pretty much just SC and a few others at this price point people thought it was absurd and ripped him and those that used them for it. Now that everybody else is at that level as well it's acceptable.

I do feel the difference as putters are so subjective. Put I dont tend to change them every few months like I do a driver.

More of less this. You can find tons of putters that offer way better value for less than $300. We have a smaller market up here in Canada, and you can still find many Ping putters that were $359ish now for less than half and basically new. TM pumps out just as many putters that have virtually nothing new (shocking I know) than previous generations. I picked up a SC Mil-Spec in great shape for $240. Just don't buy into the hype and marketing, just like everything else in golf, especially putters...

Once you get a good putter, you may use it for 10 years. I have been using a putter i bought in 2013. Regardless, you don't have to buy an expensive one. I love my wife's smart sqaure putter from Cleveland (which I paid just $60 for new).

I don't particularly get it. I mean, I understand the whole "people pay whatever they think something is worth" deal. I also understand that having a putter you love and think is great will go a long ways to more confident putting.

 

But I see three putters. All copies of a Ping Anser, all milled out the same material. One is 150, one is 250 and another is 450. To me the only difference is the hype around the name.

Used Scotty for years. Plunged into the stroke lab for a short time and found them to be “cheap” feeling, went back to a bettinardi inovai 6 and could not be happier

I just bought a new Spider Tour X Chalk recently for $270 and I’ve sunk some lengthy putts in the two rounds I’ve played it, made almost all putts within 3 feet so it’s been worth it for me. We’ll see if it holds up or should I say if my putting stroke holds up.
