Scotty Cameron vs Mizuno Putters

Recommended Posts

I am considering a new putter, and I wonder why the Scottys are $100 more than the Mizunos? Is it just the name brand, or is one significantly better made than the other. I am kind of leaning towards the Mizuno because of the price and the weight kit, but I could be persuaded to go with the Cameron.

either get fitted and go with what fits the best, or whichever one you like the looks of more

You're kinda paying for the name on the Scotty's, not saying they're bad just you know paying for the name on the putter. Now the Mizuno I've heard nothing but good things from them from feel, price and what you get. Honestly can't say which one to buy just on price alone, I'd putt with both in store and see what works better for you in the end.

Another reason for the $100 difference is Scotty Cameron are made in the USA.  It is expensive to manufacture here however doesn't always mean better quality or results.

In looking at your original post you don't appear to be in a hurry nor hung up on bagging a Cameron. So if you have the access, why not try them all until you find one that looks and feels right and more importantly, makes the most putts for you?

The Mizuno is a quality putter as are several other brands, including Cameron. Just spend the time to try and buy what gives you the most confidence in making the next putt.

PS: Back in the day, Scotty and Bob Bettinardi used to make the Mizuno putters.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

I've rolled both - Scotty is definitely a solid, more crisp feel. Mizuno is slightly softer. I personally like the feedback of the Scotty. I also like the look of scotty more. I still believe a scotty is a better putter based on the entire overall package. I wouldn't expect a 10-15 handicap to be able to decipher subtle differences in putters - a putter is a putter to most until money or career is on the line - attention to details matter and scotty is unmatched in that department...

That being said, if you aren't too particular on your putters, save money and get a mizuno - great  putter and will definitely do a great job for you in you're properly fit into one - along with several other brands. I really think Cleveland makes a great putter - extremely soft putters with their last few releases.

I do like a crisper feeling putter. I have been using an Odyssey, and the soft feel kind of takes the feel out of the putter for me. I recently switched back to an old Ping Anser 2, and I have a lot better distance control with it. Might just stick with the Ping for a bit.

Since the Mizuno is out of carbon steel and the SC is stainless I wonder if this can account for the price difference?  Also, will the Mizuno rust over time?

Don

I've never known there to be a price difference between carbon or stainless. Mizuno plates their carbon putters so there is no risk of rust, discoloration etc...

I currently have an m craft I in my putter rotation.  It’s a great putter.  Feels fantastic and super easy to line up.  I put a BGT stability tour shaft in it and it’s been getting most of my rounds lately.

If the Mizuno putters have a shape you like, then that is helpful.  Scotty has more options.  I also really like the fastback from Scotty as well.  Go with what feels right and what shape you like to look at down by the ball that gives you confidence.

Scotty cameron made a massive impact on the custom putters over the past 20 years. he is essentially the tiger woods in the putter industry. cameron has become a status symbol at this point. Fine materials and precision making them. Not all Scottys are great but if you find the ones that fits your eye then take good care of it. you'll be able to keep the value up over the years.

I was just at PGA Superstore rolling both (along with some other putters).  Both of them are top notch putters (sooooo glad that Scotty went away from the inserts).  My distance control was a little better with the Cameron but I didn't dislike the Mizuno.  I also rolled some new Betti's and the new milled SeeMores.  Those SeeMores are pretty sweet, but also pricey.  I LOVE their new triangle-shaped grip.
Best thing to do is roll them all and go with what fits your eye and feel the best (to you).  The Cameron may cost a little more than the Mizuno but it will also hold it's value better.

Seriously?

Any product is priced where it is because the folks who make it think they can get the price. It is and will always be as simple as that. Trying to create a metric of value vis a vis elements like "better made" and so forth is a waste of your time especially when you're discussing companies as established as Mizuno and Titleist.

Have the confidence to buy what you like and go out and make putts with it.

I have and really like both (M Craft 1 and NP2). Both feel great. Like that the Mizuno is a little longer even at the stated 35 inches and like the weight they throw in. I switch back and forth depending on my mood.

I thought that the Mizuno was longer than the stated length because I compared it with a Scotty, but it turns out the Scotty is actually shorter than stated, I wonder if they measure from the heel or the center of the putter.

I actually moved from a Scotty Cameron to a Mizuno M-Craft.  Now, the reason was more due to a change of putting stroke than anything else.  I used to be more disconnected with my arms from my body, and was more straight back and through.  Now, I arc it a little more, and was finding a lot of misses out to the right.  I went from a Futura 5w to a M-Craft II (i.e. face balanced to a slight toe hang).  It helps me to shut the face a little more and release it.

That being said, when I did the change, I tested a ton of other putters (Mizuno, Cameron, TaylorMade, Bettinardi, etc).  I just ended up with the Mizuno because the price was right, and I already have a ton of Mizuno stuff in the bag, so I'm a bit biased maybe?  However, I did notice when tested in the Mizuno vs. the Cameron that my speed control with the Mizuno was better.  Also, the putts came off the face a bit faster, which is good for me, because I have a lazy smoother stroke, so I don't have to swing it so hard on longer lag putts.  It also felt like the Mizuno M-Craft II was "more forgiving" on off center strikes than the Cameron Newport.  That is something that the fitter that I was working with has noticed with SC putters...everything is great, but they are just not the most forgiving putters.

Now, understand that your mileage will vary.  I'm only expressing my opinion, and conveying another one.  Like most have said...get fit and pick what works best for you and not someone else.  Either way, both are good putters.  They both look great, feel great, and ultimately, it's usually the last club to get the darn ball in the hole.

(BTW, I also understand that the putting issues are also in my head and I probably didn't need a new putter.  No judgement 🙂 )

go with whatever works....but the general line of thought is if you're missing to the right a face balanced putter is better. toe hang helps slow down the toe opening in backswing and slows closing in thruswing.

Like I said...It's between my ears.  🙂  I still stand by the fact that the Mizuno M-Craft and Scotty Cameron's are both good putters.

I also have the M Craft 1 and love the weight (i have the 13g weights in it), and the sharp lines of the head shape. The only thing I'm struggling with now is the grip. Are folks using the stock deep etched cord? Coming from a flatso I thought no way can I use the deep etched but I actually like it. What do you all have on yours?

I liked the stock Lamkin cord grip, but I had put the Golf Pride Red Star Pro Only grip on a couple of other putters and wanted to try it on my M-Craft 1 as well.  I kept the original grip, but haven’t felt compelled to put it back on (I really like the Pro Only).  My personal experience has been that I like the feedback better with the Pro Only; that combination has resulted in the best feeling putter I think I have ever used.

One of the Pros at my course is a Mizuno staff guy, and he told me he has seen pictures of three new shapes that were coming after the virtual PGA show. He couldn't tell me a lot, but he said one will be similar to an Odyssey #7. I believe I'll wait until the new ones come out before I get a new putter.

Yeah I work at a golf course and I saw a Mizuno order sheet for 2021 and it had listed an M-Craft 4,5, and 6. Haven't seen pictures yet tho.

He saw some pictures on the rep's phone, but really didn't have any details. He did say that he thought they were mallet style, and wouldn't be available until February.
