Rickie Fowler is a cautionary tale in overexposing a superstar

You know he was heading straight to Studio 54 after the game.

No no wasn't open when that was taken.  he went to Bachelors 3 which he owned with 2 other players. Rozelle made him shut it down cuz gamblers etc. liked to hang out with Joe.  Joe quit on account of Rozelle's action for a short time, then sold the joint.

Rickie just doesn't have that killer instinct/win at all cost take no casualty attitude. He isn't the only one and Finau seems to be there too. It is ok though. Both are filthy rich and live a great life. That is the whole point of playing pro golf. It is a business. Rickie said in his subpar pod his goal was to make it to tour and win and he has done that.

Brandle had a concise evaluation of RF last year before his instructor change. Basically he was good at everything but not fantastic at anything. But his flatter swing plane really hurts his ability to control shots from the rough.  I see RF a little like Spieth but Spieth had the hot putter in majors for awhile and better out of the rough. The reality is most of the guys on tour are hot only a short time during the year.  If someone else gets hotter they are not going to win.  I am sure RF wants to win more but if he can get paid by sponsors take it while you can.
look at Justin Rose , taylormade did not want to pay him and he was no. 1 in the world. So he went to Honma.

I think this is big factor. More muscle mass might help here.

My frustration with him has been in his game management. He can be stupid aggressive which looks amazing when he's on but in a major can force an implosion and take him out of contention fast.

Comments such as these are hilarious.. Rumors were that Rickie, tore through the talent while at the Olympics..  You laugh at the mans stature but perhaps you didn't realize that he's a legend..  aka: "Big" Rick...

I’ve heard stories that a big part of logistical planning for any Olympic Games is being able to have enough condoms available to the athletes staying in the village.

The marketing thing is kind of interesting too in regards to Rickie. Whether or not his play "lived up" to his marketing image, i might argue at least from an optics perspective, he has been the second best "marketer" of golf products of the past 20 years. Obviously Tiger would be #1 in that he literally helped start a new brand and gained them widespread usage and a following, even if they eventually stopped making equipment.

But Rickie's impact on golf clothes, hats, even the color orange. You see it everywhere. He was and still is incredibly popular with young golfers. I would also argue he was instrumental in helping with Cobra make a bit of a comeback. Before Rickie i feel like they were kind of middling

It's hard to think of someone other than Tiger, who has been a better brand ambassador than Rickie.

Maybe that's why he was "overexposed". It was working!

Jeff, I think that's very well said.  I think it was you that said about the article, that a lot of times it's the editor that comes up with a title (for sensationalism etc) not the author.  The article could have just as easily been entitled; "Rickie Fowler, an illuminating tale of how being a nice guy can help make you a superstar." 🙂

Athletes competing in the Winter Olympics have been handed 110,000 condoms - a record number for the games.

It works out at roughly 38 condoms each and gives competitors enough opportunity to heat up what could be the coldest winter games in 20 years.

I second what Jeff said.

It's somewhat symbiotic for the PGA tour in a way; you have guys like Rickie who more kids probably lean towards, then other guys who "win", like a DJ/Rory, who probably is less marketable. Kind of like a Billy Bean thing in a way, "if we can't find one guy to equal Tiger...who says we can't have two guys equal Tiger." Almost if you split Tiger in two you'd have Rory and Rickie, to a lesser extent (also funny they were on the same video game title).

also kind of "come for the X, stay for the Y" type deal

Winning alone does often not translate to an athletes viability for sponsors marketing goals.

I mean, look at Broadway Joe. Won one championship and 50 years later, he’s on TV...like 5000 times a day! 😂

Great example.

Ricky ever wins a major, this whole conversation is different.

Oddly, Broadway Joe lives in Jupiter probably not far from Ricky.

He's already won the Players.  Oh, wait.  Only the Tour players consider it a Major.

The funny thing about this topic is the 99.9% of the guys who have ever played on the pro tour have only two goals in mind; 1. Get on the Tour, and, 2. Stay on the Tour.

Meanwhile, on WRX, if Rickie doesn’t win 30 Tour events, 6 WGC events and 4 majors he qualifies as an underachiever

Is Rickie now outside of top 50 OWGR? According to the author if he's not top 50 by year end he won't be going to Augusta.  That would be a shame. His % missed cuts for 2020 is the highest it's been in the last 10 years by a lot. I know 2020 is a totally screwed year and this years performance may not mean a lot, but I hope he makes it to The Masters.

I'm sure some of you have already seen this but many not.  It supports my hypothesis that earning lots of endorsement money can occupy too much time and be a disincentive to working as hard as possible on the craft that got you there.

I'm a Fowler fan so I hope he can be more competitive.

I think u meant Jordan Speith?

Big d Rick is very talented, but I don’t see greatness in him, at least to this point. His work ethic and competitiveness aren’t an issue either. He regularly made the Ryders and Presidents cup, so he must be doing something right.

Tho I agree that money can be a huge distraction for young players, big d Rick is no longer young in golf age. He’s mature in his lifestyle and gameplay. It sucks to think that he doesn’t have it in him to be great. He might be the Garcia of his generation, always lurking in the shadow of his peers...

How bout just 1 major? Underachiever is in relation to hype.

True. The difference with Ricky is he never hyped himself. Sergio is an arrogant %$#@ who never won a major but he had a big mouth and hyped himself. There's a few others I can mention. If he's 'underachieved', its because of name and face recognition and dopey folks in golf who use his name to act like they know what they're talking about.

In other news, Ricky Fowler almost ran over my son with a rented Cadillac CTS in Seattle Bright NJ...but that's a story for another time.
