If Citi wanted to show how inclusive they were, they would be telling us more, much more than they are. What is a meaningful amount? How are they going to go about creating this “change” that they speak of? How does Justin go about showing his “sincerity in working towards that goal”?

 

This is simply an attempt by Citi to milk the whole thing into some positivity for them. News Flash Citi - you are an international investment bank. Everyone knows that ethics and you have only a passing relationship.

 

Where is my apology from Citi for having to read this utter, shambolic nonsense? Will Citi be deducting $5 from the account of everyone who uttered an unfortunate remark?

I’m surprised JT has not come out publicly with a plan for what $$ he is planning to give.  I’m not surprised that the golfing community in general does not really care about what he said.  The golf community is just not an inclusive, open minded community (obviously just my opinion but the comments in this thread reinforce my view).  Golfers in general do not seem concerned with LGBTQ issues and I also hear plenty of anti Black Lives Matter sort of sentiments on the course.  I know people will disagree with that, but it’s what I’ve witnessed.

My opinion on these matters has greatly evolved over the last few years.  I’m 42 and grew up saying many things that I would not say today.  Not that long ago I could easily see myself saying exactly what JT said.  I would have laughed at someone saying I had upset them by calling myself something.  But after getting to know some members of the LGBTQ community at work I see that these comments have a real effect on them.  They struggle mightily with how the world perceives them and these sort of incidents confirm their greatest fear, that people look at them as less and they are not accepted.  I know many in the golf world would agree that they are less and should not be accepted and they are entitled to their opinion.  But to think that large sponsors should be ok with this sort of language makes no sense...

I know that this is an unpopular view on this forum but just thought I’d add another perspective.  One that as a kinda red-neckish middle aged white man took me most of my life to wrap my mind around.  I’m still a JT fan and don’t think this is a hanging offense or anything.  Despite taking a kinda hard line here I’m really not that sensitive.  But a very rich young man having, what amounts to a very small financial consequence, is not that big a deal either and would show a little contrition in my opinion.

I’d edit this one pretty quickly.  No politics.  You can’t bait the field and think it’s ok.  If we can’t discuss it. It’s out of bounds to mention it. That’s two of the larger political lobby’s on the planet.

CITI have as much right to take a moral stance as JL, who will presumably stop manufacturing their clothes in homophobic countries until such time as those countries change their attitudes.

If we're going to hot-mic golfers like JT and potentially ruin his career for a slur he's apologized for, perhaps we should also hot-mic the Citi boardroom and Congressional bathrooms just in case. JT has already paid a social and monetary price for his actions and seems contrite enough for me. Perhaps he should dump Citi and look for sponsors that will care more about his golf and less about his word slip that will dominate Wikipedia.

Don't disagree that human rights are important however I fail to see what JT did remotely hurt or violated human rights.  He used an obsolete, inappropriate, adolescent playground term toward himself and no one else. He gave a heart felt apology. If he'd said "JT you dumb mother f....r"  Would mothers have taken that as a slam against them?  Of course not.   

 

Honestly are gay rights groups outraged by JT or is this just a bunch of corporate hypocrites acting out?  Seriously no one was hurt or died because of JT's words, but these same corporations manufacture products and exploit cheap labor in countries that will beat you or kill you for being gay.  This is a level of HYPOCRISY that infuriates me!

As i mentioned in the other thread, sponsorships are not a right and they are essentially, a reflection/mirroring of society. Companies endorse you because you are marketable and associated with good things. If you want to keep earning that money, you have to play by those rules. Companies don't want to associate with someone in the news for these reasons. If you don't think that's fair than don't take the money. No one is asking MtlJeff to endorse products for millions of dollars, if you're in the public eye this comes with it

 

This does not mean i endorse our obsession with being outraged at things, or that i even think people are outraged here. This all feels very "part of the machine". I doubt people are really outraged , it's manufactured outrage followed by manufactured caring. There is a gray area where people should be allowed to make mistakes while we are in the process of bettering ourselves and our society. 

 

And AGAIN, as was pointed out in the other thread. Ralph Lauren makes their clothes in notorious anti LGBT-Q countries (so spare me their corporate crap about caring), and CITI was involved in the 2008 financial crisis and took bailouts. I am sure they really care about people too. I am sure the LGBT-Q community's hearts are warmed that big banks are on their side

I wonder what the contact langue is ?  I’m sure if he quietly doesn’t bow to their demands they can’t donate for him in lieu of payment to him. .  And if they did and didn’t pay me , I’d then sue for breach of contract and non payment.

The problem here isn’t a donation.  It’s that it’s a PR power move by citi.    They are taking credit for any donation preemptively by bullying JT into making one. 
 

I’m a firm believer that I’ll give you the shirt off my back if you ASK for it.  But if you come to TAKE  it. You better be ready for a days work.  
 

this is them publicly taking it. Not privately asking him to do so.

The fact that he used the word as an insult--even against himself--shows that being gay, or LGBTQ (isn't there a + or ? symbol as well?) is sort of wrong. That's why it's become an issue.

That said, there's a lot of BS going on here. As as been pointed out, CITI are certainly not paragons of virtue. I am pretty sure that the bank's decision was driven more by financial concerns than ethical concerns. 

However, as to the point you raised in your first paragraph...the word he used is offensive to people who are mostly equal in the eyes of the law. As to the others you mentioned in your example, the mother***ers, while certain websites might beg to differ, I don't think they enjoy the same protections or approbation from society.

I would assume the decision to donate was something that Citi and JTs side probably agreed upon.  Coming out to the open with the news as a chance to portray advocacy, is nothing shocking.
