Rory working with Pete Cowen

So back to Rory, I'll bet "strokes gained" hasn't been looked at or any part of his discussions with Pete!

Just put some washing machines out on the range at various distances and have Rory hit wedges into the tubs.

High efficiency washer or an old style with the agitator?

Bryson’s putting is not impressive?

Half way through the season and he is 38th sg putting gaining .435 strokes per round(almost 2 strokes per event) putting. For the full 2020 season he was 10th at .635 Sg putting.

More simply put Bryson is one of the best putters in a tour full of wonderful putters.

Its decent this yeat but not impressive.....and when you see his stats on sunday...its not even middle of the road.....making putts on a Thursday...much different....on Sundays he is 92nd.....booooooo...putting from 5 feet away?? 152nd!!!

It’s doesnt.  I’ll try to ignore it either way.  For everytime I mention it , I manage to not mention it 100 times.  I loathe it.  😂

But seriously.  Some folks are stat people and some are not.  I’m extremely -not.  In my opinion it’s the squasher of all things artistic. Of all things good about the game.  Or life in general.  I think some folks need them as security blankets and  some of us actually play worse with them in our heads. Neither mental illness is wrong or right.  Just different ends of the spectrum.

Id love to know why it riles so many up when I mention it ?    It’s not as if it’s a pillar of the game.   And lastly.  I’ve had these convos privately.  I’m not the only one. I’m just the only one who will say it out loud.

The issue is you say you understand it, then you use anecdotes and hypotheticals in an attempt to show unfounded inconsistencies with it. Like when you say "well the player still has to make the putt". Yes, they still have to execute, but that doesn't invalidate the statistics in any way. The guy with the most SG total wins the tournament, the sub categories just tell you exactly how he did it.  If you don't like the method and you don't like stats/data, why not just skip the conversation completely?

Statistics and analytics are used in all aspects of commerce in order to increase revenue. These guys are playing for millions of dollars every single week, it's a full time job where everything they do revolves around improving their game. Being able to diagnose their performance relative to their competitors is absolutely fundamental for many of the players. It's not like you are thinking of the statistics as you are playing or over the ball, but its just a tool to shape how you practice and the strategies you employ on the course. The "art" you speak of is not lost, the player still has to execute, they are simply executing the highest probability shot vs relying on dated falsehoods and myths.

Think of it like texas hold em, the best players in the world are using statistics on every single hand, yet there is still plenty of "art" in judging what the other guy is doing and/or masking what you are doing. Yes there are cases where they may make a choice that is against the odds and win, but if they consistently do that over time they will eventually lose their Word not allowed. It's not any different for golf, it's a calculated game with a one clear objective, take less strokes than everyone else. The SG method just gives players insight on how to achieve that

Sample size from a given length for a given partial year is just way too small. Bryson is a fantastic putter.

I don't know anything about Rory's upbringing, mainly his education or maybe the lack of it. But from my perspective somewhere along the line he either started reading some philosophical crap or somebody got into his head because when I listen to him in an interview he seems to want to converse in a more educated and sophisticated manner both in style and content but he is saying nothing. He seems to be one of these people that are searching for the meaning of life, and its got his mind so twisted that he has lost focus on what used to come naturally to him...just my .02

Yeah, I don't agree that he is "saying nothing", but he does strive for intellectualism and like philosophy-lite when that really isn't and doesn't need to be his bag. Agree he seems to be searching for meaning, and maybe he's found it with a wife and kid - clearly he had some kind of adverse reaction to such fame and success at such a young age. His way of coping with being crowned Tiger 2 was to try and make golf secondary in as many ways as he could, and find meaning elsewhere. It's made him a bit of a head case, but it's also made him probably the most interesting interview subject in major sports. Still, there's a reason the greatest greats don't give away everything they're thinking in their pressers.

It's also funny because the books he reads that the media praises him for aren't even academically serious or historically important works but like those pop-philosophy books with curse words in their title. Somebody in his team should hand him Plato's Republic and some Kant and see if that fixes him.

Sounds like he's trying too hard for self improvement.

He'd be better off reading Dickens's Great Expectations.

There was some article about him I read in I think Golf Digest a couple months ago where the author namedrops “How to Stop Giving a F*ck” or something like that.

Unless this guy is a putting guru, not sure what the point is.

Its crazy how Rory’s putting stats can fluctuate year to year

Look at 2019 (3 wins and PoY) compared to 2020

2019

2020

Stats can be misleading and have to look at the whole picture. McIlroy's putting stats are poor because his ball striking is not great. Proximity to the hole, he ranks 158th and driving accuracy, he ranks 142nd. So, he has much longer putts and definitely has an affect on putting stats. If he was just stripping the ball and stuffing it all the time, his putting stats would be better. Right now his ball striking is the issue.

Makes sense Rory would be toiling in the philosophical world now that he's married and has a baby girl (probably even a bit before that, seeing as he is pushing 7 years without a Major).

“The support of my parents has been incredible – even growing up and doing everything, the sacrifices they made for me,” Rory told the Belfast Telegraph. “Even to this day, they’re the two people in this world that I can talk to about anything; I couldn’t ask to have two better parents. They’re there for me at the worst of times, like this time last year after missing the cut, or the best of times, walking off as the champion golfer of the year. I can’t speak highly enough of my parents. They’re the best people in the world.”

I would imagine he is questioning his own place in his new family's life.  He doesn't really need golf anymore to lead a lifestyle of his choosing, so unless he desires the hunger again, he's most likely done as the phenom to challenge Jack's throne.

Price and Faldo.  There's 8.  But they were also 30 years ago.  And his track record has a lot more derailments than success for someone of his "reputation."

Again, though, Leadbetter seems a lot more like a "you will learn my swing" instructor, as opposed to a swing that works for the individual.

That SG putting stat measures his putting compared to the entire field...from the exact same distances.

Its a totally pure comparison of how Rory putts vs the rest of the tour.
