PGA Tour implementing lucrative new bonus structure to reward the "needle movers"

The Tour has ridden On Tiger’s back for the last 25 years. Now that there is no Tiger like player, they resort to this kind of thing to stay popular. To me, this is just the Tour recognizing that the Tiger era is over, and there is no dominant player to draw attention.

Interesting take, but the PGA didn't take drastic measures during Tiger's "personal challenges" era circa 2014-2017.

This is less about Tiger and more about the PGA attempting to stay relevant.

I think this is a terrible idea primarily because the bonus system is anchored around the wrong stuff. If the bonuses were geared toward those players who are most involved in charity and growing the game through action then I'd be cool with it. This is primarily driven by one statement "enhancing the tour's value". The tour is a conduit for the players to be involved in more than themselves. This program moves the needle to players being more about themselves.

The guys who devote more time to charitable causes, whether on their own or at every event they play in, the guys who are involved in growing the game though junior programs and other "get involved" outreach programs...those are the guys who should be rewarded.

As has already been mentioned, guys will hire teams to handle their social media. This will be about other people doing the bidding. The program should be centered around ACTUAL effort, personal sacrifice, not outsourced initiatives.

And I haven't even started on the path of where enhanced social media influence will take golf.

Not good.

How about if you get beat up and lie about it?

Exactly. We need a points board for these situations.  How about avoiding federal prosecutors?  Lol. That has to be bonus $1mil right ?

Nothing gets more press in today's media. The PGA tour has a massive image problem in that regard.

Eh.  They just have to realize their core audience, and understand that they dictate the profit ceiling.  There’s a limit and attempting to break that will likely result in severe penalties.  Can’t cater to the news media. Their attention span isn’t long enough to watch golf. Much less play it.

Exactly.  Reaching Teflon status should be part of this.  If tiger comes back snd wins form this I think he gets to Teflon 2 status ....

Agreed.  I like points.   All things need to be considered for pete's sake.

An errant golf ball strikes a person or a house.

A pro fires a caddie on the spot.

Someone blows an air horn as a pro is about to putt, and strange as it may sound, the pro jumps gleefully in the air, apparently in fear.

The same guy cries after every golf tournament.

Harris English actually plays well.

Adam Scott makes yet another attempt at pleated pants in a major.

Curtis Strange claims he likes to warm-up with driver (driv-ah) and pros start warming up with driver.

Justin Leonard adds 12 more charms to his bracelet.

We can all agree these are impactful situations, but how does it affect the money?

Yep, just look at social media in general.  "Instagram models" aren't the best looking, most educated, most virtuous women, etc.  Their "value" lies in the willingness to put themselves on display and in very little else.  Yet there they are, with their thousands/millions of followers...  Someone could discover/invent the cure for cancer and society would hold them in less regard than the fake lips, fake eye lashes, butt/breast implants having "influencers" who, ironically, all look nearly indistinguishable.

Eventually golf will no longer be about who is the best golfer, but rather about who has the biggest brand.  I'll still play, but I definitely won't be watching the PGA Tour.

A post with zero substance, consisting of nothing more than a catch phrase made popular by/on social media, and that fails to articulate any argument/position whatsoever.  That's about what I'd expect from you, sport.  I suppose the irony is lost on you though.

I've always wondered how much value the social media stuff really gives companies.  I know some people who believe that you aren't garnering customers with "likes", etc., you're simply getting people who are looking for free stuff.  I'm thinking that is a pretty good take on the situation.

This is so bizarre and distasteful I don't even know where to start.

So the  PGA Tour is going to have to employ people to track all these social media metrics, which can be manipulated??!!

What kind of silly attention seeking behavior is this going to encourage?

The Tour and advertisers know Tiger is near the end, but still got a massive new TV deal. They’ll be ok.

I think that getting the players more money is a good thing, although this is the same Tour that wouldn't allow caddies to wear sponsored bibs so they could make some extra money to pay for health insurance (they later came to a settlement to get the caddies better health insurance).

The thing that bothers me about this is that the Tour could use this money to actually promote the Tour, the players and the game and instead are providing an incentive for the players (and their sponsors) to just promote themselves.

One look at the NBA, NFL and MLB and you see far greater reaching marketing and advertising campaigns to promote their leagues, their players and their game itself compared to the PGA Tour.  There should have been a hard driving marketing campaign for Matsuyama, the first Japanese player to ever win a major in a time where Asians have been victims of hate crimes.  But nope, we're just on to Harbour Town.  Let Srixon promote him.

I agree, they should be promoting the Tour and maybe be like the other leagues.

However, golf is different than those sports. Think of the NBA, the Bucks or Wizards may not win championships, but more times than not you'll get a good game played out of Giannis or Westbrook; so that's easier to promote. Take the PGA tour, just look at this past Masters, top players didn't make the cut, and one of your most famous players (Fowler) wasn't even in the tournament; that's hard to promote.

I'd imagine the Tour has some stats on this; meaning, I'm sure they have a good idea of the appeal of Matsuyama, and it might not be as high as they want. That's the problem with just basing it on results. The Tour's worst nightmare is probably someone like Martin Kaymer, 2 majors, world #1, Players Champ, guy has trouble getting sponsorships. On the flip side (hate to keep going to the well) is Fowler. But that's how every league is.

At one point, when David Stern ran the NBA they asked him his ideal finals, he said "Lakers vs Lakers". If the Tour had their way, they would probably want winners every week to rotate between Woods, Fowler, and like JT.

Probably most of us on this site are closer to hardcore fans, and understand how much it takes for more "random" guys to win. However, more and more, to draw in casual fans, sports are becoming like the WWE.
