PGA Tour implementing lucrative new bonus structure to reward the "needle movers"

The 10 beneficiaries will be determined based on their “Impact Score,” a number generated from six separate metrics that are designed to quantify that individual’s added value. According to a document the PGA Tour distributed to players, the contents of which were shared with Golfweek, the metrics on which players will be ranked against their peers include:

(1) Their position on the season-ending FedEx Cup points list.

(2) Their popularity in Google Search.

(3) Their Nielsen Brand Exposure rating, which places a value on the exposure a player delivers to sponsors though the minutes they are featured on broadcasts.

(4) Their Q Rating, which measures the familiarity and appeal of a player’s brand.

(5) Their MVP Index rating, which calibrates the value of the engagement a player drives across social and digital channels.

(6) Their Meltwater Mentions, or the frequency with which a player generates coverage across a range of media platforms.

 

 

whatever ... this reeks of something ... i guess desperation, though i don't know what of/for ... so fowler gets a $5 million bonus without having to win a tournament?

Surprises me the PGL was viewed as that much of a real threat. Clearly it was but a very curious solution.

Seems like the fed ex cup pretty much does this already. The needle movers are the elite players for the most part. Guess it just will incentivize people doing more social media stuff and drumming up interest.

The PGA Tour should setup the course such that every green has a regular hole and one of those "soccer golf" holes. If your FedEx Cup ranking is below 125, you get to shoot for the "soccer golf" hole that week.

While i think that having likable and social athletes is actually necessary to having a popular sport....Something this forced seems just as likely to backfire. 

 

They might as well just let them cut promos , have entrance music and do interviews with "mean gene" in between holes.

Rickie Fowler must be ecstatic about removing the golf from golf. More commercials inbound

The bigger question is whether this is coming from their coffers or from a sponsor.

 

It seemed to go under the radar, but it wasn't a good look for Comcast to take the axe to GC like they did, only to turn around and sponsor a $10 million prize pool on tour.  Or should I say TOUR.  

 

If they got a sponsor to pony up for this, my thoughts would be as follows:

• Whoever signed off on that deal for the sponsor needs to be outed, and fired, terribly unwise use of a company's cash, IMHO.
• Whoever got a sponsor to sign on for this has an ability to BS that is out of this world.
• Why not just flat out pay the money to the guys for whom this is targeted?  Clearly this is designed to get Woods a boat load of cash, probably Fowler, and a couple of other guyswhose on course performance will either be non-existant(Woods) or not as lucrative as it once was(Fowler et al.).

Just read on Shackelford's site, apparently one of the metrics being used is the MVP Index, which is generated by a company founded by Jordan Spieth's pops.  

 

I know we're not supposed to talk politics here, but it almost seems as though some of the more corrupt entities could take a lesson or two on how to funnel money.  10 guys splitting $40 million.  Wow.

I see this as a direct response to the PGL and a host of top players (Brooks, Rory, Tiger, etc...) suggesting that they are underpaid for what they bring to the Tour.  Put another way, if the PGL didn't pop up last year or the year before last (the whole world pre-covid is a blur), then I don't think this bonus plan would have come about - at least yet.

I think they're shooting themselves in the foot with this garbage.  More and more sports fans are losing interest and being completely turned off by where pro sports is going.  Many don't want to be bombarded with the politics, propaganda, and the "national enquirer" vibe.

 

My interest keeps moving back to amateur sports
