What do you look for in your wedge shafts?

Recommended Posts

Putting together my bag for the season.  Got fit for some Mizuno Pro 223's 6-AW with Project X 6.5. Most likely I'll go with a Project X 6.5 in my sand wedge and I have no idea what I want to go with in my 60 degree.  I do not hit full shots with the lob wedge.  Basically use it around the greens for chips and flop shots only.  What do you play in your lob wedge and why do you play it?  For that matter even though I will most likely play a Project X 6.5 in my sand wedge what do you play in your sand wedge and why?

Just curious to hear what others do and why.

I play the 6.5 as well in my irons. 5-gw. The gap wedge is the set wedge.

I usually just buy wedges off the rack but I recently ordered a sand wedge with the 6.0 to test out. If that works then I might put it in my 60 as well. I normally don't make full swings with either club so thought a lighter flex with the same profile might be good.

Waiting for snow to melt so don't have any on course results.

I have KBS tour 130 X's in all of my irons/wedges, except the lob wedge. 5-PW are JPX 900 tours, and then 50' and 54' Cleveland RTX fullface.

Lob is a 60' Taylormade high toe raw I had built with a black KBS 120 $-Taper.

I like having that consistency throughout the whole set. The stock wedge shafts just don't hold up to a full swing, and my dispersion and ball flight got tighter / lower with the KBS'

Like you, I also rarely take a full swing with the lob wedge. That's why I went with the $-Taper, which has the same bend profile as the KBS Tour, but generates a little more spin, and allows for a little more feel without being completely different to the rest of my set.

That's interesting with the $-Taper.  I like that idea, maybe find something with a similar profile to the Project X with a little more spin.

It’s a sunny 65* and a few courses are open here in the metro 🤣

The original set of wedges I played with current iron set were DG120 x (same as irons).  Thought I’d like something heavier and tried S400 TI’s but it was too noticeable of a difference.  Went back to 120’s but S300 flex.  Love them now.  I may consider swapping the X into the 50* wedge if the S300 gets wonky on full shots (but I rarely ever ever hit those full anyway and the trajectory and feel is great so far in S300

Ultimately, I ended up with all wedges in same  profile but one flex softer.

Play PX 6.5s in my irons as well.

Have tried PX 6.0 and PX 6.5 in wedges and found both to be entirely playable. Currently using DG X100 and like it better than either of the other two.  It’s both a touch heavier and a touch less stiff, just what I wanted for a wedge.

What do you play in your lob wedge and why do you play it?

For most of my golf years, my Gap/SW 36" had the same PX 6.0 shaft and the rest of my irons (SW-D2/D3), cause it was mostly used for full shots only, and its SW was D7.  However, my LW was set up different as I am a feel player.  My LW had DGS200 shaft (slightly softer tip section) length was 36" cause it's a feel club that's seldom used for full shots.  Swing weight was E0

Today, 5-PW are D1/D2 SW and Gap is 35.75" SW/D4 and LW is 35.75" and D6, same MMT 125s.  All setup to fit my feel style of golf.

PS - for wedges a slightly soft tip section and material that talks to my hands.

I play project x 6.5's in 4-P, and in my 50* and 55* (56* bent one strong).  I use a 6.0 in my 60* and have used 6.5 in the past in the lob wedge.  I can't necessarily feel the 5 grams or whatever it is, and i've seen negligible differences, but I liked them both.  Just more stable to me than the wedge flex that comes in vokeys.

I am in the process of migrating to new iron shafts and new wedges so this is a timely topic.

In my previous set, I used Dynamic Gold S400 TI's all the way through irons and wedges. This worked really well for me on all shots except for partial wedge shots that you want to fly high and land soft. What I am going to start with is this:

Irons and gap wedge: Dynamic Gold X100 120g soft-stepped once (like the lighter weight and DG feel, needed slightly stronger flex)

Sand wedge: Dynamic Gold S400 wedge shaft - I really like this as a wedge shaft for 3/4 swings and up, and also all greenside shots.

Lob wedge: Dynamic Gold S300 8 iron shaft - sort of a Tiger-step in that the shaft is heavier than my iron shafts and has a more active tip than a normal in-family wedge shaft. Different from a Tiger-step because it does not have the stiffer handle of X100. Hopefully this will set me up to hit higher, spinnier partial shots than I could previously.

I use 8i X7 shafts in GW, SW and LW. S400’s in irons; likely going to update to X100’s or maybe X7’s in the future. Really love the spin and heft with X7 in the wedges.

In my wedges I use a softstepped shaft that is the same weight but stiffer flex than what I play in my irons. It’s an old trick I learned 25 years ago. Basically it’s an 8 iron shaft played at wedge length. For me it does the 3 things I want:

1 Better feel, especially on partial shots

2 More spin

3 Lower trajectory

I have 6.0's in my irons including gap wedge and then 5.5's in my sand wedge and lob wedge.  I prefer the slightly softer flex in both clubs working around the greens and out of bunkers.  Feels like i get a bit more spin on certain shots.  My 2 cents...

Heavy feel, softish handle and softer midsection, singular bend, decent snap through release. I actually prefer a stiffer tip for feedback and spin control. Not the DG Spinner vibe though, that is too soft in the handle/mid, feels too loose and no control.

I use a prototype Nippon Modus that is over 130g and a stiffer tip. Its kinda like a KBS Tour but heavier and smoother.

Similar route - play C Taper 130X in 4-PW + 50* + 54* and then went 125 S+ KBS 610 in 58* and have a 62* that I rarely ever use but went KBS Hi-Rev.

Started keeping track of how many strokes I was losing last year on mid range and ripping balls back with full shots w/ stock shafts. Tested out some others and was amazed at differences of lower launch, better control, and not flaring full swings with 15 feet of backspin.

Never really thought much about wedge shafts, I just go with whatever stock is, generally that'd be Dynamic Gold or KBS, which all work fine for me.
