I’ve tried it using a conventional 5w (e.g., 42” long, small head, 18 deg loft).  Didn’t like it.  Good for hitting the ball (relatively) high and far from good fairway lie but not optimum from tee and not the best from rough, sketchy fairway lies, etc.

I’m now playing what amounts to a 4-1/2 wood and a 7w.  My 4w is at 16.5 degrees loft with a 5w length shaft.  Slightly larger head makes it more comfortable from tee but still small enough to work nicely from fairway and the shorter shaft helps with both delivery AoA and contact consistency.  The 21 deg 7w is better in every way than a 5w (for me…) given my swing speed and spin characteristics of modern balls.

Regrading conventional 3w, those days are gone for me.  Don’t need the extra 5 yds carry or 10 yds total I might gain over my current set-up  when hit from a peg and can’t hit it high enough from even an excellent lie from turf.

Anyone not carry a 3 wood? Like 5 wood is your longest non driver club?

That is my standard setup.  Driver, 5w (set at 16.5°), 3h or 4h, then irons/hybrids to suit the course.  Been doing it for years.  I have a 3w that I carry on longer courses where my driver distance just isn't enough.

I would if I hit driver less than 270...I think almost everyone in this boat should go 4w/5w as their next club. Guarantee as I age this will be my bag setup.

I do this. I don't feel like I'm giving up too much off the tee and my 5w is great into par 5s, plenty of grab. Gap between that and my irons is fine also, 15 yards.

For half a season I played an 18* Alpha 815, delofted to 17 as my only fairway.... basically a 4W.

Now I've gone back to my standard for the last eleven seasons, 4W + 7W.

Golf research shows that most golfers can  hit a 4W more reliably - and sometime longer - than a 3W. A little extra loft helps launch, and a slightly shorter shaft helps accuracy.

A couple of the OEMs feed the idea "everyone wants to hit a tough-guy 3W."

  • Callaway Rogue ST D (draw) has a 16* 3W.
  • Tour Edge E722 fairways: a 15* and a 16.5* 3W (16.5* is a 4w in most kingdoms)
  • And of course, TM never leaves home without its 3W/HL.

Yeah. Started that with a Launcher 17* that was awesome, then a bad experiment with a Sonartec. Not a 5 wood per se now but I go 16.5* then 19* hybrid up a click to 20* then 4 iron - did this with 915f2/816h1 and now TS2/TS2. Better consistent flight for me than 15* (and I kill worms with a 13.5*)

Yes, my longest club besides the driver is a Ping 410 5 wood (17.5 degree) with KBS TD 60 category 3 graphite shaft.  I occasionally wish I carried a 3 wood, but I would rarely need it.  My 5 wood is used on tight driving holes with high success of finding the fairway.  I’m 61 years old, 5 help, driver is Titleist TSI3 with TENSEI RAW white 65g Stiff.   I also have a Ping G410 7 wood with same KBS TD 60 cat3 shaft as the 5 wood. Irons are Srixon Z785 4-AW Nippon NSPRO Modus 120 stiff.  Driver average = 250 yds, 5 wood goes 205-220 yds, 7 wood goes 190-200 yds.

5 and 7 wood is dramatically straighter than 3 wood for me.  I’d carry the 3 wood if they’d change the rules to allow 15 clubs LOL.
I also use a Fourteen RM-4 S grind 56 degree SW and Ping Glide 4.0 60 degree E grind 8 degree bounce D4

You're getting 235 out of a 5 wood consistently ... and you don't have the swing speed for a 3 wood? Have you watched the LPGA?

I mean that’s at altitude so probably 220ish at sea level. And no not really lol. Maybe it’s not a swing speed issue but I’ve hit a lot of 3wds where maybe 2/5 are solid and the other three are just super low and go no where. Not worth it to carry one

Now that I can relate to (not the 235 yard 5 woods) ... I just chalked it up to not finding the right shaft - and gave up.

I could probably do this but my 5W goes high for me so if I’m into the wind 3W is so much easier to pierce it. Haven’t practiced a steep 5W enough to take 3W out of the bag.

And that would describe me perfectly.  Driver distance is in the 235-245 range on a warm day.  Plus I'm older than dirt.

I have a mini driver (two actually) at the top of my bag, and the higher lofted one can be used off the deck in a pinch. But for the most part my longest fairway club is my 5-wood. I have a TSi3, which is small but very powerful, and I'm experimenting with a TSi2 to see if it gives me any added consistency. I then go either 4-utility or 7-wood depending on the wind.
