Give me your favorite wedge

Captain Hook11

Recommended Posts

My Vokey SW finally bit the dust this fall and I'm in the market for a new wedge. Quick backstory: I really only like using 1 wedge above the gap wedge. So my bag was PW, GW, and my 54-degree SW.

I'm considering a 56; basically I like using 1 club inside 80 yards, it's worked well for me. Anyone have a favorite wedge (probably 56)? I'll likely buy it used and probably in the 100-120 range. TIA.

My magic wedge is my 48/10 F grind SM8. I guess your loft can be whatever you need it to be, but my random/abstract recommendation is an SM8 with F grind.

Had played a blade style wedge for decades and it’s the strength of my game. Switched to Cleveland CBX Zipcore wedges a year ago and they are hands down the most consistent wedges I’ve ever played. I almost feel like I’m cheating because anywhere near the face and I hit my number almost every time with consistent spin and launch. If I don’t hit my number, it’s my fault.

Throw in another CBX Zipcore recommendation here. I have it in 56°, it just works well for me.

I’ve been a fan of the Callaway Jaws MD5 wedges. I’m sure the newest version is just as good or maybe even a slight improvement.

I’m an average wedge player but I agree with this. Currently in my bag. I love the shape at address more than anything else. Fairly versatile and feel nice. Spin is OK too

Zipcore pisses all over Vokey and MG for me. Much prefer them for absolute every metric but that's just my game. Can deloft a 58 for extra pop or open it up no issue/

I also love the cheapest wedges I ever bought Macgregor VIPs so my opinion should be taken with a pinch of salt.

I also like the lighter standard shafts found in the Callaway’s when compared to those found in other OEM’s wedges.

Just switched from an MG3/Hi-Toe 2 combo in to the Jaws Raw Full Toes.

Feel wise far superior to the Taylormade's and I love the versatility of the grind to open up in the bunkers and utilize the toe benefit.

Looks are fantastic as well as you can barely even tell they are "Hi Toe" wedges.

I'm a 60-degree user for 95% of my greenside shots, sand-excepted, and for pitches out to the 50 yard mark.

I was a long time Eye 2 L wedge user from my early teens into my mid-twenties, then moved onto a 588 RTG, a couple of raw, low bounce Vokeys, and a raw Nike Forged 60-degree, before swapping out my most recent Vokey, a raw L Grind SM5, for an Eye 2 Gorge L wedge last year. I grew up back in an age when every man and his dog had at least one Eye 2 wedge in his bag, and for me they simply look good behind the ball and work. Mine's been butchered to take the bounce off, as that's the way I like a lob wedge, not really using it from sand other than off hard packed stuff or in plugged lies. It hasn't got a nice brown patina like my old one, and I miss the old grooves, but they still feel 'right' in my mitts.

I've gamed Vokeys, Ping, TaylorMade, Cleveland RTX & Zip Cores wedges over the past 2 decades.  For some reason, I keep going back to Cobra.  They have the set up and grind that works perfect for me.  They may not be as soft feel as others and are limited in grind and bounce options, but are under rated in my opinion.  My favorite is the Cobra Snakebite Black wedge.  Gaming 50*, 54* & 58*.

Big fan of the zipcore raw.  Soft feel, pretty forgiving for a bladed wedge, can get custom grinds at a good price.  Big fan of my 56 full grind with a custom leading edge grind and heel relief grind.  Also, the full face 60 I have is so good around the greens.

Like most here, I've played most of the big brands, vokeys, MG.PM and now Jaws Raw, ZipCores and RTXs, Pings from gorge to glides...currently I am playing the Jaws Raw and I have to say they are really performing well for me, a favorite??, not sure how to answer that, it's between Titleist and Callaway for me, preferred one?, my current Jaws Raw 58/08Z, it just worksfor me...

Cleveland RTX Zipcores are on sale right now at the upper end of your price range (brand new), and get my vote.  My RTX SW is my go-to wedge from 100 and in.

The stock spinner wedge is fine, although I replaced mine with an S400 for more stability.

Depending on your Vokey grind, you can match it in the Cleveland with some creative tweaking.  I wanted a higher bounce 54 with something close to a Vokey S grind, so I bent a 52.10 in the MID grind to 54.12.  Very happy with the result.

A 56 MID will be similar to a Vokey S grind

A 54 LOW (bent 2* weak) will be similar to a Vokey M Grind

I went form Mizzy T-22 which were good to the new Jaws Raw and have seen a pretty significant jump in greenside spin and ball flight control.   I have the black finish....but the jury is still out on that until I get more time with them.   Very happy I made the switch.  They are better (for me) imo

The new Z grind for 58-60 is special.  Lots of shot options without the fear of digging.

The Callaway Jaws Raw 🔥 Wedge play has always been a strength of mine, but I’ve never hit as many great shots as I have with the Jaws Raw. For me, it checks all the boxes:

- Flights low on both full and partial shots (probably due to weighting with tungsten) for more control and consistent distance.

- generates plenty of spin and quick stopping power!

- small leading edge chamfer just below the leading edge pretty well eliminates digging.

This all means you can be aggressive with the wedge and take dead aim at the flag without the worry of chunking it. It’s the total package!

I'm still using Ram wedges, Tom Watson Scoring System.  Still awesome.

Plenty of them for relatively cheap on ebay.  🙂

I’ve played Vokey, Ping Glide, Callaway forged, Maltby forged, Nike forged and others I can’t recall at the moment.  None have been better than the PXG Sugar Daddy II wedges I have now.

The feel/touch if these wedges is sublime and perfect spin wise.

That said, I wouldn’t have paid the full retail price to get them.  Glad I was able to include them in my full bag deal.

T22 wedges all last year and loved them. 54/12 and a 58/08. Most shots were with the 54degree from 115 and in. It was my work horse.

That said trying out a Ping glide 4.0 - 54/12s this season to match the i230’s but the T22 58degree will remain.
Still might put the 54 T22 back in got to see how the glide holds up in court
