Music or no music? If music, what’s your genre?

I personally go back and fourth depending where I’m playing about having music playing. I always make sure whenever I’m around others to always turn it off or way down. When I do have the tunes on it’s always like oldies or funk which is weird lol. What do you guys and gals like to listen to during your round?

I said oldies and funk is weird because I’m 30 and neither of these are popular generally around my age lol.

I am conscientious about the volume so unless you are in or very close to the cart you can’t hear it, but it’s is a mix of classic rock, 80/90s alternative, some punk, even some disco.

I find while I am waiting it calms the nerves bc I can just listen and forget the next shot, last shot, etc.

Loud music doesn’t work for me.  Def Leppard across the fairway?  No thank you.

The last time I played I had my earbuds in and was listening to the Ukrainian prog-metal band Jinjer

I can't count how many times I've heard pop, rock, country or folk from the 70s or 80s. To me that's pretty boring and unoriginal on the part of the playlister. We've all heard those songs 10,000x, but whatever. I won't complain even though I find it dull and over-played.

My only wish is that people would play more modern stuff. Hell, I'd prefer someone roll up with K-Pop than some played-out Eagles thing that's fresh off the 50-years too old pile.

Bose speaker always accompanies me.  Whether it comes out depends on the course, or game.  Playing private courses, it's seldom  used unless members use one or want it.  It's not used during a serious $$$ game, but on public courses, like tomorrow, classic rock will be playing, very low, so others can't hear it.

Because music can be like cigars, I often take a cart by myself or walk away from others.

Thank you for being aware but unfortunately others aren't always as nice as you!

I guess my advice would be if you think your music might be too loud, it probably is and if you think it might offend then it probably does!

Late in the season (like late October/November) my group sometimes brings speakers to the course and listens during the round. We have a pretty dense tree lined course and it's silly season....

We mostly listen to 80s rock

Honestly, almost everyone asks us to turn it up. We've had instances where we sat and had drinks after our round on the 10th tee and taken requests for when people come through.

Again, this is in silly season in the Northeast

I have a buddy with a little hearing loss and he was in my cart and about 6 holes into round when he asked me if I was playing music, and if I wouldn’t turn it up so he could hear it.

No music while playing golf. Might occasionally drop my phone on the green while practising my putting (and am the only one on the putting green).

off the course i listen to music almost non-stop. Detroit techno, chicago house, jazz, soul, funk, disco, hiphop, brazilian, african, synth pop, new wave and more.

... Just posted this in another thread. If I played on Saturday or Sunday I would prefer no music so I could hear the wind and the wildlife. But I play 5 days a week normally and enjoy music on my JBL hanging from my remote cart just loud enough for me to hear. Occasionally I am joined by some that ask me to turn it up and I oblige to a level they can hear if they are near me. Parking my cart beside a green should be just out of hearing range for everyone but on the tee or walking next to me down the fairway it is audible.

... I was a DJ before becoming an actor and on the radio for the entire 70's and early part of the 80's. Started in Greenville NC and kept moving to bigger cities til I ended up in Chicago playing what is basically Classic Rock today. I did 1 year at a Country station and hope to never hear a country song again LOL. Not a rap fan either. What Mellow Yellow doesn't understand is the emotional connection to music, especially for those growing up in the 70's. It was all about making the world a better place and while naive, it was an admirable goal. While I will certainly never hear the same song twice in 5 hours, hearing the same song for the 10,000x while hitting a wedge for the 10,000x still triggers a pleasant emotional response that is calming on the course.

... FWIW, I have an audiophile system at home and still  listen to entire LP's (CD's) in the dark and rarely listen to classic rock but more eclectic music like TOOL, Little Feat live, Joe Bonomassa, Puscifer, North Mississippi All Stars, Nine Inch Nails, Robert Plant and Leo Kottke since I listen to classic rock on the course and in the car. For some of us, music is a way of life and fits with most everything. That said I am always careful to never let my music infringe on someone else's enjoyment of quiet on the golf course.

I don't usually play music when I am playing.  I really don't mind playing partners playing music as long as it isn't rap, hip hop or death metal.  I'm pretty much open to most anything else.  If I am playing music I tend to side for classic rock, alternative, jazz or instrumentals.

If I'm at my home club there is usually music playing. Usually either classic or indie rock. I've never been a big country or rap fan. That being said, it doesn't bother me if there isn't music playing. It's more or less just white noise to me.

On the other hand, if I'm playing somewhere special (i.e. destination/bucket list course) I don't like music.

Honestly I listen to classic rock and roll away and to and from the course. I go to the golf course not only to play early, but to listen to the sounds around me. Birds chirping and squawking, hawks screeching, turkey's rustling about, deer and other mammals running or strolling along anything but music. Others may enjoy the music which helps them play, for me the quiet and sounds of nature put me in a better frame of mind.

  • 1 month later...

I have a Bushnell Wingman. I bought it to use the speaker to play music anywhere but on the course. I use the distance voice app on the course.

Last week I was playing as a single and I got stuck behind a single stuck behind a foursome. I decided to put music on to help pass the time. I had it on very low barely able to hear it sitting in the cart. What I noticed was the music seemed to carry and sounded louder while I was on the tee or a distance from the cart. I was amazed how the sound was carried.

I have to say if you are someone that plays music on the course and you say you keep it low not to bother anyone. I doubt you are the only one hearing your music.

My group often listens to music in October / November when it's silly season and the course is pretty empty. Classic Rock is usually the choice, tough to go wrong with that

I think there's a time and place with golf. Late October when there's nothing at stake and the season is over is OK in my books

We've had people join us--We always ask them how they feel about it. At that time of year most people are like "crank it!"

I use earbuds and listen to music when practicing.  If I was to use while playing, I would use earbuds as well, people probably wouldn’t want to have to hear my music, just like I probably don’t want to hear there music.

I don’t have a speaker or anything personally, so unless i’m playing with people who do its no music for me. Not to say that i’m against it, the vast majority of my friends play with some sort of tunes playing.

The Def Leppard comment made me chuckle… Years ago i’m playing in an event called the Jake Gittlen at Hershey Country Club. We’re part way through the round on Saturday and some music starts playing to the point where you can hear it all over the golf course. I remember thinking “man, some garage band is really jamming!” Then I start to listen closer and I hear “Hysterical, hysteria, when you get that feeling…” Turns out Def Leppard was doing a concert at Hersheypark stadium that evening and they were doing their warmup set! So that was truly Def Leppard blaring across the fairway. But I guess if you’re going to have music playing on the course, thats not a bad way to hear it!
