The problem with the matchplay is… the matchplay! Few people find day 3 of Ryder Cup boring, in matchplay tournaments its the other way around. The first days are exciting, you got shots really meaning something all the time. The final… just following one pairing with potentionally lackluster players. Don’t really know how to get the best of both worlds. Matchplay - as a format - is far from uninteresting. But to set it up to get a good total package is not easy.

I actually like the idea a lot, and IMHO a 32-player match play tournament seeded by points standings would be a lot better than the staggered scoring model. 

 

That said, the only downside I see to it is that players who have spent basically the entire season being evaluated and earning FedEx points based on stroke play, now get a different format when it matters most. Given that there can be different pressures and strategies utilized in match play, I'm not sure I love the idea of changing it for the end of the season Tour Championship.

As they get further along in the tournament, there's less golf being played. It's just the nature of the progression. In stroke play other guys are still playing. At the beginning of the week there are 64 guys. On Sunday, the final match and the consolation match are the only sources of coverage.

The first day of the matchplay is one of the best opening days of golf on Tour I think, with 32 matches on the course. Shame they haven't found a way to make it more compelling at the tail end. I don't think it's a problem with the format.
