Buyer Wants to Return Item

I need some advice please. I have done so many deals here as both buyer and seller. I recently sold a GD Tour AD shaft. Buyer sent me a message saying shaft didn’t work out for him. Wants me to send him a label to return it. I guess I don’t have a problem refunding payment once I receive the shaft back. But isn’t sending him a label same as me paying for shipping back?

 

I’m afraid he might dispute through PayPal and they take his payment back. Again never happened before and don’t know what to do. Is it customary to take returns unless something was damaged or I didn’t disclose something?

maybe they are just new to buying from a private party but in general I believe:

 

1) you can’t return an item for refund unless there was something wrong with it or it was not as described, when it arrived

 

2) seller definitely wouldn’t pay for return shipping in this case

As far as your situation goes, politely tell this guy to pound salt, let them file with PayPal if it comes to that, forward your conversation to PayPal, this should NOT fall under the “not as described” clause, PayPal should close the claim, end of story.

Yeah that is a hard pass. Unless it gets ugly, I am all for keeping this private. They are welcome to try to sell the shaft on BST, I mean that is what most of the merch on there is doing, people trying stuff, not liking it, trying to get out of it for just shipping costs. 😄 

 

If you have PMs that state he just has remorse (nothing is wrong with it), even a PP should be able to recognize there is nothing shady about the transaction.

Buyer wasn’t being ugly or rude about it. I guess it’s more of not him knowing more than anything else.  His username is btran321.

I didn’t think he was being rude about it. But bottom line is if you buy something blind like a lot of us do the risk is on the buyer. Period.
 

If it arrived as it was described and he just didn’t like it or it didn’t fit him it’s on him. He can resell it. Or use it as a tomato stake for that matter.

Lol. Yeah, no.  It'd be one thing for him to ask if he could pay to return it since I guess it never hurts to ask, but for him to tell you he wants to return it and for you to pay for it coming back is either just a lack of knowing how things work or, like another poster said, next level ridiculous.

 

Hope they chime in on their side of it.

Tried it, so there is nothing wrong with it.  He can send it back on HIS dime AND insure it in case anything happens to it in the process.  

 

In most cases there are two sides but it sounds like the buyer tried it and just doesn't like it for whatever reason and now expects a free trial.  You buy it, you try it, it's yours IMO.

I’d take it a step further. You buy it and it arrives in the stated condition it’s yours. This isn’t a retail shop. 
 

No harm in asking the seller. But if he says no, that’s that. 
 

And yea - asking for the return label - which I missed originally - is next level cojones.

Asking for the return label pushes it over the top.  If he sent it back to me then I’d refund him just to avoid the hassle, but no way I’m sending a return label unless there was an issue of some sort.  
To be clear I don’t think you should refund him, just that I probably would, after he sent it back on his dime, just to save myself the hassle of dealing with someone who would try this crap…

You bought it now it's yours. 

All of us have dozens of things that didn't work out and we either resale and lose money or it sits in the garage/basement/ shop.

It would never even cross my mind to ask for a return from an individual seller unless item was not as stated. A retail shop may be a different story depending on the circumstances, but an individual????

I had this exact scenario happen several years back, except on a Circle T. Had a 303 SSS refinished by the Custom Shop. Sold on eBay with COA & full disclosure. Guy bought it, tried it for two months, opened a PP claim, sent me back the putter and the sole was scuffed to hell. Needless to say PP sided with me and I actually came out ahead on the deal. 

 

If you buy it it's yours. IMO don't go down that trail OP. It could create a headache for you, and enables future members to think that's appropriate.

 Many issues here:
1. Retail hardly ever allows returns on anything custom - which shafts quite often are

2. He could have tested the shaft out before buying it. He didn't and that's not the seller

3. If he did want to return it, the shipping should be completely on him and shipping costs originally should not be refunded just like at retail

4. Unless something is wrong with the product like being damaged or listed incorrectly, it's his. If it didn't work out it's on him to sell it to recoup his $
