Great wide-brim hat that can be used for golf-suggestions wanted

Recommended Posts

As stated above, I'm looking for a great wide-brim hat that would be suitable for golf. I'll also use it for other activities. I live in an area that has a maximum UV index of 14-15 in the summer, so I need plenty of protection, light weight, and a firm enough fit to stay on in windy conditoins. I had an Aussie Chiller beforehand and liked it; however, I was told it was packable and after doing so on a trip, the brim never recovered to lay flat again.

No dorky golf-logoed hats please. Even if it's a fun style, I don't need an advertisement on there unless I'm getting paid to wear it. I'm not 75 and betting at the hound track in Florida; no need to look like it! Some of the styles that these golf companies come out with look like a cross between Carl Reiner's (RIP) bucket hat in Ocean's 11 and a Vietnamese rice field worker's hat.

I have 2 of these and love them. The cooling does seem to work somehow at least for a few holes.

They have "golf specific" ones, I haven't owned it but tried on The Clubhouse and it was a nice feel.

I’ve worn the “Condor Performance Sun Hat ” on the course everyday for the past year, 8-10 hours a day and this hat just performs.  In case you take it into the water, it floats.  And the “bend” you see will be there for good, no matter what you do to it.
it’s not “wide”, but it covers your head, ears, face and neck.

Unless the weather is cold, just get a Tilley LTM8 in a size that lets it fit well without being too snug in the sweatband.

It's not particularly ugly, not particularly stylish, just a plain looking broad brimmed hat with mesh sides, in a taupe/tan/khaki kind of neutral color. Can be washed on gentle cycle about 100 times (and air dried) before looking any the worse for wear. Can be washed many, many more times if you don't mind it being a bit faded.

It's going to keep the sun off you as well as any hat that doesn't have an enormous, unmanageable brim. It's durable and washable, because it comes in exact sizes it's comfortable and the mesh sides means you will still sweat in hot humid weather but not nearly as much of a head-sauna as heavier, solid-side hats.

If the wind chill is below 45F or so those mesh sides aren't your friend! I keep an old solid-sided Tilley around for those rare occasions I play when it's that cold.

I'd say about half the people I play with in a given week wear either LTM8 of the similar LTM6 nowadays.

P.S. I can only comment on hats that are practical in the Sweet Sunny South during the summer. Heavier, unventilated cloth hats will be a sweaty mess for half the year and straw hats (unless you are willing to wear them after they get nasty) will be sweat stained and awful looking after the first 85+ degree Heat Index day of the year.

Just without camouflage.

You can find them here and there for about $15.

I use the above mention Tilley LTM8 as an everyday, do it all - then I use Coolibar as golf specific = both Matchplay & Fore models - Match play has a very wide brim whereas the Fore has better line of sight.

I wear a Tilley sometimes. I've been wearing Tilley's since the early 2000's, mostly for when I was doing landscape photography. They are waterproof, UV resistant, have a strap when the wind gets up and float!

They are a Canadian company, the only downside is they moved production to China and the quality is not quite as good.

Try Hudson Hats online. I ordered my last one through Amazon and it came from Hudson, a company I have dealt with before.

I'm assuming the max UV index down here is at least 14-15 in the summer.

Just ordered one of these: https://imperial1916.com/product/cc050-the-old-norse-cooling-sun-protection-hat/

Used a boonie hat released by Sugarloaf the past couple years, but the brim is starting to get a little too floppy: https://www.sugarloafsocialclub.com/archives-headwear/ufhm3gl4q228zdyohrh4sh0ex03u15

My 2 cents -

Tilley hats are nice, have 2 including the LTM8 but never wear them for golf. Too warm, even the "lightweight" one.

Straw hats look really cool but can't wash them. They're fine if you like sweat stains. You should see mine!

Mission boonie looks nice and light, but one size only I think and brim doesn't look broad enough

Callaway and Walter Hagen versions of the classic Titleist look pretty nice

Should also look at Imperial watership coolcore - definitely the best for me here in Florida

One thing you gotta watch on most hats like this- if you have or wear 7 3/4 or larger......none of these types will fit......doesn't matter the brand Ping, Titleist,  Mizuno or Callaway- none will fit - at least everyone I've tried on

If you play in wind....you'll need a firm brim as well or it'll flop all over the damn place

Yep, I have a size 8" head and life's too short to spend 4 hours out in the hot sun having my head squeezed by a so-called "XL" size hat that's actually about size 7-1/2 or 7-5/8.

I have debated getting a cowboy hat like a Stetson Bridget, but it just doesn’t work when you Are short and fat. And from the North
