Been playing the MTB Black for most of this season and I simply love it. Then last week on Sundays 4ball, I happened to find a ball near my ball off the fairway and it was a MTB X (red numbers).  No one was around in any direction so someone seemed to have left it. I cleaned it up and proceeded to hit two of the longest drives of the year for me on back to back holes.

Anyway, ordered 5 doz and will not look back. Great spin off my irons and wedges, feels a touch firmer off the putter which is still nice feeling, but the driver performance...man! Thanks to Snell for these bad boys and also they arrived in like three days to my door step in AZ.

Ahhh. He switched! MTB-X is LONG off the tee. Let me know more how you like it around the green. Only reason I switched from it was for more green side spin. Look fwd to your feedback after more rounds.

Chance encounter is paying off. Will do and so far so good. I noticed a little more spin on the mid short irons and a touch higher launch window with similar one hop and stop action green side. Still similar to the MTB Black. The biggest getting used to feel is off the putter so far with the X feeling a touch firmer. Not “clicky” by any means just a touch firmer which seems to be feel and audible with no change required for speed on putts. I need another round with them. Tomorrow we are playing Sterling Grove CC in Surprise, so should be a good test.

@Snell Golf With the spring buy 3 get 1 free deals coming in the next week or so from some of the major manufacturers, just wondering if there were any spring promos in the works for all of us Snell players!? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Confirmed MTBX is really good off the irons and driver...probably my best driving of the year this past Sunday.

Around the green, I think the Black is better for my feel wedge checkers and the putter.

I have to play a few more rounds with the X to make sure it wasn’t the brand new greens at Sterling Grove (course has only been open for about a month) that made me miss my MTB Black green side. Playing Raven tomorrow and I know those greens very well. Will be a great test for the X. So far impressed top of bag...love the Black as well. Maybe a ball called the XB comes out some day right in between the two. So we get MTB X firm, XB medium, and Black soft.

Confirmed X is the ball. Had a lot of choice high spin checkers off my T20 56 and was impressed with the green side control of the X. For me either is great but these windy cooler than normal conditions for AZ currently love the X. If you need a premium ball that’s long off the tee, nice spin off the irons and offers a nice feel around the green it’s perfect.

I am a little confused. Looking at the USGA conforming ball list, the MTB Black in yellow and white look like different balls.  Construction is listed as 1c and 2c.  The spin is L-H and L-M.

Pole 1: Snell Seam 1:   MTB Black yellow   3P-1c   L-H 360

Pole 1: Snell Seam 1:   MTB Black white    3P-2c   L-M 360

I like yellow balls but not sure what to think of the difference.

They all have the same basic construction (appears that the submission form was filled out differently). Ultimately the USGA construction code options are poor given that it leaves mantle classification open to interpretation thus makes cross OEM comparisons difficult (some view it as another cover others not).

I played MTB-X last year and it is a great ball....but I’m trying out the Black this year. I know I’ll lose a touch of distance off the tee but I’m absolutely loving how it feels putting and I think that’s more important. MGS did their big ball test last year and the Black was about 2 mph less off the driver in ball speed on their “high swing speed” driver test and about 1 mph in their “low swing speed” test. I’m somewhere in between those two so I figure I’m theoretically losing about 3 yards. The 7 iron speed difference was less than .5 mph.

My swing is still coming together (only played one round) and it was only 55 degrees but irons seemed basically the same and the driver/woods were maybe a touch shorter.

I’m lucky to be long enough that I’m OK with losing a bit of distance off the tee if my confidence putting is higher.

Maybe it’s dumb - I shot my best score ever last year with the X after all. I guess I’ll see how long the 2 dozen Blacks last and figure it out from there.

I totally agree. However, ball tests are not typically done across a variety of temperatures. Most anecdotal evidence suggests that softer balls are better in cold temperatures.

TXG found that colder balls were actually faster than room temperature balls. I think all balls are shorter when cold due to air density and wood faces being less elastic.

I got the 5 doz before winter hit and am happy to report I haven't lost a ball yet!

If I didn't have 6 dozen ProV1 X, 1 Dozen CSX LS, 1 Dozen ProV1 and a handful of RZN balls to get rid of, I'd be grabbing Yellow MTBX upon release. I am hoping, by the time I need new balls, they're more readily available and in yellow and, maybe, a new version.

Call me crazy but, I am concerned that the next batch that comes in have as high of standards to prior Covid world. Not that I think there is anything to be concerned about.

I have been hesitant to put in play the MTB Blacks that I picked up around the Holidays as I want to give them a fair test. It has been cold and damp all year so far and it wouldn't give a true indication of performance. For example, it was in the upper 30's when we teed off yesterday with a cold North breeze. However, it now looks like the weather is finally going to break next week with temps around 60° or more at tee time with highs in the 80s. So I figure this will be a good time to finally put them in play!

I had the test pack of the Blacks and the X.

I also had a dozen OnCore Elixr and I like the Elixr but in no way was it close the the Snell

The Snell was at least 10yds longer off the tee (Black)

The Snell Black had more spin but the Elixr did perform well.  It is a good ball, but I cant get over the distance I get with the Snell off the tee.

Next test with the Snell will be against the Z-Stars( last yr model) I bought when they went on sale

So far the Black and the RX are my 2 favorite balls

The Snells get the nod on price and they feel softer off of the putter.

The last two seasons, I've experimented with other balls (Srixon, Bridgestone) but keep coming back to the X.  The Bridgestone went a long way and stopped when I wanted it to but was really affected by the wind.  Like, they were blown 10-15 yards offline.  We consistently play in wind here so that was definitely a negative.  The X has been solid and cuts through the wind very well and still does everything I need a ball to do.

Have to agree with everyone here about the MTB-X's wind performance. Into the wind the ball cuts through better than any ball I've ever played. When playing in a side wind the ball tends to hold up against it rather than ride it which is exactly what I want.

Two other features that I'd like to point out is that the shade of Optic Yellow is by far the most visible ball on the market. The second is that the cover material actually feels similar to the White offering. This isn't the case for Titleist, Srixon, Bridgestone yellow balls which are a duller shade of yellow but also have clickier covers than their white counterparts.

Just jumping in. Not going to go through 183 pages of thread to find a simple question.

Performing a search as you suggest will narrow it down a little but it brings up every reply that contains tp5 or prov1 including those that contain tp5x and prov1.

There's not a direct translation with the MTB Black and MTB-X, it's a bit of mix and match.

The MTB X is firmer like the TP5x, but per Dean Snell spins more on the short irons like a TP5.  MTB Black is softer like the TP5, but spins a bit less on the short irons, though maybe not quite to the TP5x level.  Short game, the two balls should be roughly equivalent.

If you look at the Today's Golfer Ball Test, it can give you an idea.  It was robot testing, at three different swingspeeds with driver.  Should give you a decent idea of how they compare.

I'll try paste the chart results, and here's the link if you'd like to see it all yourself:  https://Not allowed Per Todaysgolfer's UK request/features/equipment-features/2019/september/robot-tested-which-golf-bal-suits-my-game/
