He saw I was coming to the Boston clinic and decided making the weekend at the US Open would be easier than fixing my golf swing :-P

Congrats, Monte! Hope I don’t see you next month...

Let’s be real. I have never been more confident in my game than right now...aside from putting , but I don’t play a lot. I probably don’t play more than 90-100 holes in a good month.

The last time I played in an event with any significance was finals of Q school in 2016 and my knee was so smashed, it doesn’t even count because I was out of it after 9 holes. Before that it was a web.com event in 2008 when I had no game.

I am not scared at all, I got game, I can compete, my emotions say I can beat all these has beens.

As an outside observer and fan of the game. If I watched me play golf right now I’d say this....

He hits it farther than anyone in the field and his iron game can compete with anyone right now. Pitching is adequate and sand game might be the best part. If he gets his putting under control and keeps his wits, he has a good chance at making the cut, but he’s going against guys that have been playing events like this for 30 years. Any goals higher than that are delusions of grandeur.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

McCarron was my teammate in college, I can learn from him...so was Kenny T, who just won the pga and is second on the money list. Brandt Jobe was also on that team. McCarron and I were told we weren’t good enough to play there.

There are probably like 10 Bruins in the field.

Jobe

McCarron

Kenny T

Pavin

Perniece

Myself

Maybe Waldorf, Pate, Delsing?

First of all, huge congratulations. This is well earned.

I get that you are tempering your expectations, but I don’t like when someone’s goal is to make the cut. Seems like a recipe for not playing your normal game and attacking the course. You keep a positive attitude, play this course one shot at a time and go in with the attitude of going low, lack of experience means nothing.

If you don’t think any of these guys are better than you, why should dozens of them be ahead of you after the cut?

Here’s to hoping that’s actually how you feel and you’re just being modest :)

Thx for clearing that up for everyone.

Since ThinkingPlus didn’t bother while correcting me I’ll correct my mistake for myself, so let me share the particulars for T10 qualifications:

“One spot for the highest finisher, not already exempt, within the top 10 of the previous week's tournament. Note, however, that a top-10 finish in a regular tournament does not qualify a player for a major. In another quirk, a top-10 finish in a major does not qualify a player for the next tournament on the schedule, even if it is a regular tournament.”

So sorry Monte my bad if you T10 or better other than a check you don’t get squat other than automatic entry into the next US Senior Open.

Technically a T15 will do it. But anyway...good luck Monte!

That’s why I had two hats on in that post. The player in me thinks I can get it right and kick a**.

The golf instructor and fan in me has the realistic analysis of the most likely scenario.

I never tee it up thinking “make the cut”

I tee it up thinking hit this shot well short term and make birdies intermediate.

Congrats to you. I've played a lot of senior amateur events in Colorado and know quite a few of the guys who played the event yesterday including Robin Bradbury who was the other qualifier. Robin is now 62 and is one of those guys that has gotten better as he has gotten older. First time I played with Robin was almost 10 years ago in the medal round of a match play tournament. I beat him by 3 that day. If I played him today he'd take all of my money.

Hope you play great at Warren.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. I have been fortunate to have played with several guys that have played on Tour and Monte can flush it better than most. Plus he has speed.

Monte, I hear you on realistic expectations, but at the same time, you will be longer and hitting shorter irons into every hole, get that putter going and you never know.

Good luck buddy.
