The L4V definitely should have made it onto the recent "unicorns" thread. Apparently it was magic paired with an Aldila cinnamon or even a Dynamic Gold if my memory serves.

They limited 4 variables. Pretty crazy stuff. Than the following year they limited 5 of them.

The year after they were like "we're out of variables"

I know this is an old thread, but I just acquired two mint 8 degree heads that I want to try some some shafts out in. I'm looking for something that I can aim down the left side of the fairway and at most have it fade back to center. I don't like to feel a much kick, and I know these heads tend to be a little heavier so I was thinking maybe something like a hzrdus t1100 ( I think that's counterbalanced). I want something I can go all Dechambeau and will still go somewhat straight. For reference I'm usually somewhere in the 120 range depending on how often I'm playing, and it's easier for me to launch higher than lower. I don't really have excessive spin, but low spin shafts tend to work better for me. Driving accuracy has never been my strong point so either go 2-iron for accuracy or I go driver and tee it high and let it fly. So if anybody has any suggestions on shafts I should try with these heads please chime in.

I have a little bit of experience with this. I have paired mine up with a few shafts over the past decade. The best options I have found were the Aldila Protopype 60X, Tour AD GP 7s, and I think I remember really liking the Fujikure Motore Speeder 7.2 VC Tour Spec. (SS is at 103-108) I have had good results with something Tip Stiff. I have a Tour AD IZ 5s and a Tour ad GP 5s on deck to try out. But I am really dying to try out the Tensei range cause it is counterbalanced which was rumored to be like the original shaft. I think that would be a great fit because the headweights are so high (in the 205-210G range).

On a side note, I am looking for a backup to my L4V X if anyone has one. I really need another one but they are becoming harder and harder to find.

I still play my L4VX with a 44 inch Aldila DVS 60X every so often. It's still competitive - long (one of the longest, still), loud, and fun to hit. My TS2 is better as a whole but the L4V is still fun!

This may sound crazy but I've gone back to the L4V.  It's more consistently longer/forgiving than the G400 LST, Mizuno ST-Z, SIM/SIM2/M6/M5 for me.  I don't understand how but the results don't lie!  HAIL L4V!

I've taken mine to the range a few times lately... it's an L4VX with Aldila DVS 60X and an dirty white Iomic grip.

It is such a wonderful club. It sounds terrible compared to most modern drivers but its performance is right up there.

This was THE thread back in the day! I built an L4V with a shaft that never performed for me. Crazy loud driver and a must have back in the day. My 9015D was better for me.

I tried my best with the L4V but the head at about 208 grams was just too heavy for me to do it justice. Even with a light shaft the drop in SS killed any possible gains. I did have one or two drives that were WOW but i couldn't consistently get it to pop. I'm the same with the heavy heads of recent years and fine tune them when possible to the weight i love. I reckon if i got that Cobe down to 200 odd grams the experience would have been very different.

A guy at my course still uses the L4V and you can hear him damn near across the course.  It's an unmistakable sound that's for sure

Been a HOT minute since I've been around this board, but how in the hell is this thread still kicking?! I still got mine, take it out every now and then usually at the beginning or end of the year. Remember contacting Rob via PM and he suggested I build one up with a ProtoPype. I used that thing for a LONG time before replacing it. Sure, sounded like throwing a golf ball at a tin trash can, but it was an amazing driver.

12 hours ago, nitram said:

The L4V was louder than the Sumo and it's not even close. It was also the consistently longest driver head I've ever hit. When I first bought it new I took it to the range and after 3 or 4 balls I remembered something and went to my truck for some ear plugs, as I was already dealing with Tinnitus. This all took place prior to me knowing what hot melt was. I pulled the head and weighed it and after some figuring I realized I had around 30 grams to play with using an OG Whiteboard 73X. So, I took some of that yellow foam in a can that expands to like 10 times its size and weighed 30 grams on a scale. It didn't look like that much when it was wet so I went ahead and added half thru the hosel and half thru a hole I drilled in the sole towards the toe. I went ahead and glued the shaft and epoxied the hole on the sole and called it a night.

The next morning I went to look at it on my way to work and what I saw was amazing to this day. The shaft was separated from the head and lying about 3 ft. away. The epoxy plug held but the two indentions in the crown were let's say half as deep as they were from the factory. And there was exactly 8 grams of foam protruding from the hosel. When I returned home I noticed the foam hadn't expanded any more so I took a drill and removed all of the foam from the hosel, re-prepped the Whiteboard, and glued her in again.

When I opened the door the next morning all appeared "normal". I pulled on the head to see if it was secure, and it was. So blew a grip on and put it on the SW scale and it was D8.5 @ 44.5"! I like heavy clubs but I was thinking if all else fails with this little project, It'll be a helluva warmup club. I took it to the range and before I ever hit a ball I put the ear plugs in again because they were still ringing from the last range session. After swinging this thing about two dozen times to get loose I teed one up, put some face tape on it, and let her rip. The first two were low and heel side and I attributed that to the weight but the balls were lying at the fence line about 300 yards away. So I made a tee height and setup adjustment and fired for effect. The next 7 shots were the most I've ever amazed myself in golf. The balls kept going further past the fence with each shot. And what was even better was the sound. It was definitely muted. The local college golf coach says it sounds like an axe hitting a hardwood tree. I hit close to 50 drives with this thing that day and the furthest was 338 with most being in the 322-325 range. It was addictive.

After around 2 years and over 500 rounds of golf the crown separated from the body. I decided to autopsy the thing to see what it looked like on the inside. In a word, CARNAGE. That foam had filled every micrometer inside the head and devastated anything inside. There (surprisingly) appeared to be two baffles and another small piece of metal that the foam had displaced.

I've never repeated that mistake with the foam and have very fond memories of the L4V. It was a beast on many levels and with the right hot melt applied strategically, it can still compete with and beat anything made today. I really don't know why I don't try one again.

I fancied doing that with a SLDR430 but i'm not so sre now. Great insight.
