Most expensive equipment mistake!

craz-e

Recommended Posts

I have a set of PXG 0311XF Gen 1 Irons that I love. I had my second round in the 70's ever with them, my first hole in one ever and more birdies and eagles than ever before in my high handicap(14+) life. So, suffice to say, I love them and are real happy with them. Soooooo,, for some reason, I go and order another set of PXG's ( 0211's) and a bunch of wedges and 2 PXG putters event though I am putting great with my Scotty Futura 6M. Brilliant!!

The moral of the story... Stay off the internet and off golf equipment websites late at night after the second glass of whisky.

Where to begin?

Had a set of MP-32's - 3-pw, with gw, sw, lw all with Aldila MLTI Pro shafts. LOVED those irons. Got in my head that I didn't play enough anymore and had to get something more forgiving. Traded in the MP-32s and wedges for a set of R7 TP's and TM wedges that I got fit for at a top 100 fitting facility. Lost 2 clubs of distance with the R7's. Went from hitting an 8 iron 150 to hitting it 125. I had a set of Graphite Design G.A.T. shafts in the closet I had been holding onto for a dream build (cost $600ish). Had my fitting pro put the G.A.T. shafts into the R7's to try and get back some distance (for a nominal fee plus the cost of grips). I got a little distance back, but nowhere near where I was with the MP's. Sold the R7's on eBay a few months later for a total combined loss of close to $1,500 and bought a set of Cobra Pro CB's off eBay based solely on looks. I hit the Cobras 100x better than I hit the R7's. I had the Cobras for 4 years before I got in my head that I needed a lower ball flight...so back to the fitter for a new set of irons. I ended up with the MP-59's. Played the MP-59's for a year and a half before buying a set of Nike VR Pro Blades that were on the wall of a big box retailer on final clearance for $200 (apparently not many lefties want blades). Hit the blades as well as my MP-59's but the blades looked cooler so I sold the MP-59's on eBay for a significant loss.

Got fit for a TaylorMade Aeroburner at Club Champion for a mere $900. YES, an AEROBURNER. $900. See if you can guess how this story ends. I'll give you a hint - traded it in towards a Titleist 915D3 and got about $73 for it.

I laugh and shake my head every time I read that people need to get custom fit in order to get the best performing clubs. Fitting is important, but in my opinion only if you're outside and watch the ball flight and don't just go by numbers projected on a screen. Also, if you ever hear that voice in your head whispering to buy a new set of clubs in order to remedy some perceived issue, tell it to shut the heck up and use the money you would've spent on clubs to buy your significant other something nice. You'll get way more mileage out of that.

Have not heard this about the P770s: what shafts? I have gamed mine since they were introduced with FLT 120s . I have two P790's that 'feel' a bit lighter in the set now but never actually weighed them out.

Some folks are far more in tune with those changes then others: I can tell differences back to back but once I start playing I tend to just make it work: feel off the face is more important to my golf OCD.

Anytime you buy a new set and it ends up not working out is frustrating for sure: I spent several weeks demoing all sorts of clubs before saying yes I like these P770s but you don't always have that opportunity. One fitting session isn't enough for some folks for example.

I combat this by only buying a new set every 20 years and even when I did that...TM introduced the P790 2 weeks after I paid full retail on the 770s. :D Have picked up a few odd woods on a great price and they were reviewed well only to find them meh but I think we all have stories about that...

Yeah, the answer to most questions here is to "Get Fit". And then you have this thread with all the horror stories of being custom fit.

The variable seems to be CC. After reading so many threads about them, and usually defending them a bit, I've come to the conclusion that they are just a higher priced GG. Your fitter is mega hit and miss. We also don't know what the intention of the player is going into this. I just can't for the life of me believe that you can go from hitting something decently, to being fit for something that performs and feels great, to outside it looks, performs, and feels so horrendous that you miss every shot with it. I'm sure it does happen, it just seems like a very high % of that happening here on this forum, which makes me think some of truth stretching is going on to some degree. Maybe not here, but certainly in other threads the comments can sometimes get downright unbelieveable.

I went to Club Champion. I was impressed with the fitting but a full bag fitting for me was too much for a one day fitting. It should have been done over two days. I believe I got the best clubs for me but I would not recommend them because of the pressure to purchase the "very" high end shafts. You can take their recommendations to other places and get the same or slightly different for $$ much less.

As an avid ‘recreational’ golfer, hearing these horror stories from folks who hired the services of club fitters, I am floored by the amount of money spent on equipments that did not fit.

Yep, I have read “Get fit” heaps of times here and now the horror stories are coming out.

I still remember when I got fit for a Odyssey Dart because face balanced and alignment lines were “the best” for me. Wrong, wrong... in these days I use a Bullseye type putter without any marks and it works perfectly. I got fit for an expensive Nike Covert driver that was 20m shorter than my Cleveland DST driver, wrong again... Lucky me I found another Cleveland driver in the bargain barrel for $100 and happy days again.

Unless you are a consistent ball striker, maybe a low single digit (0-5) or plus hcp, I would highly recommend several fittings over different days. Let's be honest, most of us are not consistent enough day to day. Some days we can't miss and other days we seem to never hit the middle. Also, hit the clubs outdoor on real turf. Turf interaction matters, cannot be duplicated on artificial mats.

Yeah, I am amazed to see so many horror stories and even though it seems CC is the common denominator, regular fittings seem to be very costly as well... I was fit for a Ping G driver that would have cost me upwards of $1000 if I bought it... for minimal gains. How many people are dropping coin because fitters tell them they should? Many don't but some do. Crazy.

I buy a lot of my stuff through my local Roger Dunn which has a 90 day return policy so I dont often lose much, thankfully. Really too bad people are getting fit then seeing poor results on the course...

Others have said it...as much good intel as you get from an LM and a good honest fitter INSIDE, nothing beats hitting the ball off the turf outside. I’d also recommend testing a club multiple times, if possible, on course. Although the shaft may not fit just right, you can at least get a feel on if you wanna continue the process or if you’ve seen enough to know it’s no good for you. Just my hacker humble opinion.

I won’t ever get fit hitting off of mats, indoors or out.

Nothing too bad for me but was fit for an Accra RPG two years ago that I hated pretty much as soon as I got it and took a hit on the resale.

Back in the day I bought a tour issue R11 that I hit great until the face cracked with no warranty. That sucked.

Getting fit indoors is the big no no in my opinion. If you can find a fitter that will do it on a grass range with the same inventory, go for it. You can see where balls will actually fly to, and allows you to aim at different targets as well, not like indoors where everything is lined up perfectly for you. I know a lot of people now that have been fit, good and bad players, and the gear never lasts.

The list is long (not all expensive)

-Callaway FT-IQ holy wow this club was short especially when compared to the FT9. The only good thing was I had the IMIX so the changes were easy

-Callaway Diablo tour drive, I though because I loved the FT9 why not get the diablo but the tour version, the shaft was horrible and all I did was hit sky high cuts and slices

-The Nunchuk shaft, this thing was horrible, it was definitely straight but I lost 20 yards at least and the feeling was non existent.

-Aeroburner Driver, to be fair I got his thing stupid cheap due to a store error. They had it on sale and then included it in the half price event. It was stupid long but a hook machine no matter what I did. I was able to sell it for more than I paid

-Nike Vapor driver, similar to the Aeroburner the price was so good I couldnt say no. For me this club was shorting than my R9 supertri. I was able to flip it for a little more than I paid

-Taylormade Redline Daytona Putter, I wanted to try a putter with a fat grip and I got this with an employee discount. The feeling is non existent and eventually I flipped back to my scotty

-RSI 1 irons, I actually think these irons are fine but the feeling is not there. it doesn't helped I came from some forged x hot pro irons. After 3 season they got the boot for another set of forged irons
