Please recommend a 16.5* or 17* compact 4 wood that is easy to hit.

I will third this.   Purchased used G400 5w in July.  Intended to play up 1* at 18.5.  Was hitting nearly as far and w/ much better dispersion than TM M2 3w.   Immediately ditched 3w and dialed G400 down to 16.5 and solely play it as a 4w.  Saved me a club in the bag to use elsewhere.

I'll echo other posts here with the Cobra suggestion. I have the F8 and it's awesome. The rails are amazing. I have so much confidence with it and is really long for me.

Rogue 17* Love mine.

I got a slightly used one and I really like it. It launches very well, but doesn't balloon like some I have had.

And as others have said, the Tour Edge Exotics and CBX (faster swing speeds) have several good 4Ws, or FWs that can be adjusted to 16* zone.

In general, 4W is easier to hit than 3W for average golfers. A little extra loft helps launch and shorter shaft helps control. At a demo day a few years back, some of us found we could hit the Exotics 4W longer than the model's 3W.

Caution on TM 3W/HL models: These often have 17* loft, but a shaft as long as a standard 3W (43.5" or so). If you get the 3W/HL you might want to have the shaft butt-trimmed to improve your control.

Anser

+1 on Anser 4w. Best fairway wood I've ever had in the bag.

Also liked Cobra BioCell Plus FW's. Super compact. Get the 5-7W, set it to 17*, and enjoy.

Also surprised noone has mentioned the F6 Baffler yet. It is hard to beat if you're looking for something compact and forgiving.

Ping G25 and call it a day.

Yes indeed!!  I'm sure the G400 deserves all the praise it's received in this post, but the G25 has been so good, I have no need or desire to upgrade.  Longest place holder in the bag right now.

917f2.  The G400 is also very good, even at 14.5* but the 917f2 at 16.5 is an absolute cannon and friendly off the tee or deck.  It is longer than any 15* 3w I have tried, except for the 917f2 15*!  LOL.

TM M5 5W. I set mine to upright and 1 click open. Plays at 42.5" which is just slightly longer than standard. With twist face and 70g weight on the bottom, no issue at all launching it whatsoever.

I am thinking the Tour Edge EXS fairway woods but are there others?  Thanks.

If you're looking for easy to hit, the Cobra F6 Baffler is money.  Compact head, but still puts it out there a good way and super easy to hit.  Can be had, in good condition, for a song now.

You’ll think I’m nuts. But.  Ping g410 SFT is 16 degrees.   Easiest to hit head on earth.  Shallow face launches it quick.  Try one before you laugh.  It’s not draw biased as suggested.  It’s just neutral as a lot of  3 woods sit wide open now

I second that.  I challenge anyone to find a shallower face.    The head overal isn’t large either. It’s just not traditional looking.  But it plays as a traditional small head would.  With a shallow face and easy turf interaction.

Im really getting along well with my Mavrik Sub zero 4wd. Its a cannon off the tee and suprisingly easy to hit off the deck.  Fairway woods have always been my nemesis.  And being left handed, the options for 4 woods was always dodgy at best.  I did go with the UstMamiya Elements Chrome 7F5 and I really like it.  Its a no charge upgrade for the Mavrik line.

The Sub70 pro head comes in 4 wood and fits the bill and is direct to consumer so you save cash. These are the woods Mark Calcavecchia plays.

Also endorse any of the Cobra heads. Even the standard F9 head is pretty compact and the Tour is more so.

Callaway Epic Flash 5 wood with the loft cranked down is another contender. The sub zero version is as long as most 3 woods.

Thanks for the replies, very helpful.  I also just learned of Honma's new TR 21 fairway woods, compact/traditional head and they have a 16.5.

I’m surprised nobody has said this yet.  155 cc is a smaller head.  I play this same setup, added 1/2” to the total length, and really like it.

Agreed! Has to be one of the best options I have found especially for looks. Turning the 5 down to 17 has helped the hooks more than the rest I tried and launches so easily.
