Thought there would be more discussion about this here?   So, they did make a local rule?  Thoughts?    It seems like it's more about keeping the spirit of the course intact and not just because of his power.   Theoretically, couldn't a lot of guys go left of the water and have an easier shot in?

Yes. This was already done by a junior golfer, Jeevan Sihota, last year at an AJGA event. Tried it 3 times. One birdie and two bogeys.

TBH, I'm surprised this kind of thing isn't done more often on a lot of courses where it seems like you could purposely hit into the wrong fairway.

Yes, they made a local rule.  They cited spectator safety as the reason.

I know this will probably get lost in the mix here, but serious questions about Sawgrass.  It seems to get a lot of negative attention, often called "gimmicky", etc.

Is it because it's a Dye design and not a Tillinghast, Ross, or MacKenzie (old school famous)?

Is it the island green 17th?

If so, does 1 hole make an entire course gimmicky?

Is an island green any more gimmicky than coffin bunkers or pot bunkers?

Do the Tour players hate the course, only playing it because of the purse, or do they like it?

Obviously opinions and tastes vary, so I'm genuinely curious.  After watching the detailed hole-by-hole above, it seems like a pretty sweet course.  I don't think it's resort course-y or gimmicky, but that's just me.

Am I a part of the "smart" group?  Please, I really want to be.

I have no reason to think otherwise. But I drew a snarky hateful response anyway. I think I’m done.

Yes, this is the swing that did it.

The "5 Families" that run golf:

USGA - U.S. Open

R&A - British Open

Augusta National - Masters

PGA of America - PGA Championship

PGA Tour - Tour Championship and/or The Players Championship

Why wouldn't one of these be considered a major, especially considering The Players has the highest purse in golf, plenty of history, a field consisting of the Top 50 in the world, and a famous host course?

For the record, it's most definitely a major.  Case closed.  End of discussion.

Why stop at one? Why not declare both of them to be majors then there will be 6 and the PGA Tour can have two. Only right, right?

I'm against it for sure, and they are definitely keeping the spirit of the how the hole was meant to be played in check. They also made a change last week as some guys outside of tournament week at Bay Hill will hit it down #3 fairway as its a much easier hole that way.

They did make the play OB this week

I really like listening to David Duval's synopsis of how to play TPC Sawgrass, also interesting how he acknowledged that on the long Par 4 that players today may be able to hit the green with their approach using maybe as little as a 7 or 8 iron...best analyst in the game right now

Agreed, way better than Brandel Chamblee

Duval is fantastic. Intelligent, knowledgable and insightful but doesn’t feel the need to shove it down your throat. Looking at you Brandel!

Its 'The Open' not British Open.

How so?  Not disagreeing with you necessarily, I'm not a good enough golfer to understand why someone might hold this opinion so genuinely curious.

Faux major - The tour can't stand not being in the rotation of being in control of a major. Drives them nuts. They continually shove this "major" moniker down our throat. If they deem it a major, so be it in their opinion. Majors are developed over time by history and tradition. They can not be created.

Faux course - Just my opinion. First off, I realize Pete Dye is an accomplished course designer and probably one of the top five architects of all time. I simply do not share his philosophy on course design. In my neck of the woods we have two Dye courses. Oak Hollow, in High Point, NC, was probably one of Dye's earliest designs. It's an OK municipal course that has some Dye-esque features (railroad ties in abundance). Then there is the Cardinal, now part of Sedgefield and McConnel golf. Totally unplayable, constantly spongy, and a waste of land. A course should look like it fits the land, and not resemble a prefab house that was stuck on a plot with a lot of snazzy new features.

Some will say its a great course that requires good shot making. Eh, whatever. Again, just my opinion.

The Course looks absolutely superb! Just something about golf courses in the early morning or early evening light.
