How often do PGA caddie's test Green density ? Tucker did every week for Bryson

Is this really a thing ? Bryson sounds like an information Diva, Pair with DJ in foursome at the Ryder Cup, just for kicks ?

 

 

Part of those demands were Tucker’s extensive pre-tournament venue scouting. In the interview, Tucker offered a glimpse into that process, from not just calculating yardages but also factoring in numbers like air density and green density. On Mondays of tournament weeks, Tucker would drop balls on all of the quadrants on the greens, then do the same on the practice putting green to establish a baseline. From there, any subtle density changes in weather or course condition could be monitored and accounted for in the yardages. 

“That to me is one of the most important things we’ve done – green density,” Tucker said. “Understanding I’m hitting a 7-iron with 6200 (rpm) spin landing into a 2% slope, it’s gonna run out four yards on a 6mm green density. That’s important and it’s predictable.”

"...It's gonna run out 4 yards on a 6mm green density" (which is not measured in length), "and 4.1 yards on a green with 10mm density".  Seems Bryson should have been less concerned with these significant digits and more concerned with hitting a par 5 green from 40 yards out a la Bay Hill.

i can see why he'd want to quit ... and not because bryson's doing something horrible ... life of a tour caddie ain't easy ... and there's little control you have over it ... he made some money and decided on a good bet, cruising people to and from bandon ...

At The Open Sky TV introduced a new thing called 'Open mic' where you could listen to the player-caddie discussion on certain shots. On the Sunday it was on Bryson and he and his caddie were discussing the yardage on one of his approach shots. They were at it for over a minute adding a couple of yards for elevation, subtracting a couple more for wind and even factoring in a couple for the air density.

 

After all this deliberation, he pulled a club and hit it to about 30 feet! Said everything about the science to me.

I have seen the USGA using it.  They want to know the exact moment they lose control of the greens.

Thank you.  And what’s the metric for measuring it.  I keep reading the thread expecting a gadget to appear to measure it with.  I know that the USga has one such gadget that they had custom made , but I doubt Bryson had one made. 
 

the USga uses a steel ball the size of a golf ball that they drop on a track , and attached is some sort of a force meter sensor.  So it can measure the rebound or lack thereof.

How the heck do you measure 6mm or 8mm bounce for a total change in distance of .1 yards?  

 

I think it's really cool science but I'm sure the difference is only fractional to your score.  Landing on a slope of the green may effect your shot much more then green density.

I imagine that considering all of these variables is good for Bryon in terms of preparing to hit a shot. He knows that he has it all down.

 

I also wonder that by introducing so many variables, it gives him something else to blame other than himself if he hits a poor shot. Most golfers will think about yardage, wind and verify that with their caddie. Bryson is thinking about all of that but adding in air density, green density and goodness knows what else. An accurate number for Bryson has much more to it than for say Jordan Spieth. If the shot goes wrong, Bryson has so many things to blame other than himself. Psychologically, I wonder if that is actually a positive for him.

Condition of his settlement?

 

Team Bryson will give you x amount of dollars not to air all the grievances that you have against the guy which given he was motivated to quit the night before a tournament started must have been pretty extensive. 

 

Gotta protect the brand.
