Since we talking about it. What’s the actual purpose? I’ve heard everything from it helps “center the weighting”, Bryson (and others) say it helps the club move through the ruff and others say it’s to make loft/lie adjustments easier. Weird how there is like 3 different answers from what seem like reputable sources??? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Makes the loft and lie adjustments of a cast iron much easier.

So would it also then require more loft/lie checking and adjusting if one practices a lot, especially off mats? Also makes me wonder how every other company manages to do their cast iron adjustments? And 💯 not being a wise guy here. Genuinely wondering.

As stated above, I have been told that is a proprietary thing (obviously) to Ping because of the specific machine that they only use to bend irons.  Some have said that even on their 431 SS which is a pretty soft metal, it is very hard to bend (on a Mitchell machine) because of the Ping neck or hosel is different.  They always want to send them back to Ping for bending because they are afraid of breaking them, unless it is 1 degree or less.  This has been my experience, but some of the Ping experts have already chimed in, and they may know better.

431 isn’t a soft metal, it’s just a softer variant of stainless steel.  Theres a reason iBlades or i210 grooves wear significantly slower than a mizuno forging; stainless is a far superior material for durability than any type of nickel plated carbon steel.

Resistance to changing positions is a part of that material durability which has to be worked around in unconventional ways.

As shown in pictures, PING uses vision-based AOI to measure loft/lie off the bottom groove of the club & “shock” the club into position since hand force is. Mitchell machines are not ideal and usually

put marks/impressions on the finish of ping clubs.

Just to add to this, I was under the impression that it gave them the ability to bend further up and down than a cast iron without the notch.

If I remember correctly it also used to be marketed as less likely to be grabbed by long grass in thick rough than a traditional hosel design.

I suppose anything with less (easily exposed) surfaces will have less friction. Not sure the reduction in forces applied [to the hosel] would deviate enough to change a shot (or more accurately, a mishit)

Even as a huge ping fan, I’d have to see a lot of data to back this one up as a true benefit. I did see Bryson endorse this on YT but also not a really data driven endorsement.

Sorry my point was I actually don’t think they have ever “marketed” that feature as a performance benefit to help sell clubs from the company itself. At least from my knowledge, and I’d guess because its hard to validate (if even possible) the difference. I have heard rumors of course.

Ping usually doesn’t go light on the engineering details for new clubs on websites, in magazines, etc too.

I’ve owned many sets of pings since the eye2. Currently have the i230s. I have bent many sets of Pings on my friends Mitchell machine. I recently gave away my i210 green dots and moved them to 2 degrees flat. No problem at all. Never had any issues. The i210 and i230 move real easy. Almost like a forged club. So do the glide wedges.

The only club that gave me trouble was the the prior generation crossovers. They were a real pain in the a**.

Maybe that's why they went adjustable. 🙂

Saw the new Blueprint S iron in hand today, and also confirmed 100% that the notch is strictly for bending the iron, nothing else.

Ping fans are going to swallow this iron up, regardless of price - definitely S55 vibes but the leading edge work looked so good.

Microslots in the 3-5 iron and a bit more offset vs the mid and short irons.

I heard Marty Jertson on the Ping Proving Grounds POD this week with Taylor Moore who is still playing S55 and Marty said the Blueprint S is going to be so close to that model he givew Moore only a matte of time before he switches!

This was recently confirmed on the Ping Proving Grounds podcast with Taylor Moore as the guest. He plays the S55 irons still and Marty Jertson stated:

"Our Blueprint S is kind of that marriage of the "S" from the S55 with the Blueprint and getting some of those sole design properties of the S55."

They wanted to design an iron that would get all the S55 iron holdouts into the newer equipment.

Ooops!! Sorry didn't read your post before posting basically the same thing.

I might have seen a set....in another cart - sitting by the 12th and we were teeing on 1. Definitely looked the part - THAT player's swing looked the part.....
