How soon before Spieth drops out of the top 50

I don't know much but I think most of his issues have been between his ears lately. Couple that with the fact that he set a really high bar back in 15. Tough to match up to.

Now some will celebrate this top 10 and deride other players who do the same as negative “back door” top 10’s.

back door? So are come from behind wins also back door wins? LOL. Hope he does well. Good thing he's made his money already, and maybe that's part of it. I think for sure he has a second half career resurgence in him.

I agree with you. I did not call it a back door....the event is 72 holes and total is what matters. However, over the years many posts have called Sunday charges back door top 10’s as the player was never in contention. As if somehow it is better to collapse and finish 8th than it is to play well Sunday and finish the same.

Yes. Jordan's problem recently has been weekend scoring period, not just sunday. He got off to a good start saturday and stalled out so it was good to see him regroup and have a good final round. Riviera is a great test for anybody's game. Hopefully he keeps making progress.

Yup. Honestly I can't even imagine how much pressure pro's have to score well every single round. It's not just the final round. It's the first round to be in position, second round to move up the leaderboard to be in contention, third round to really make a move up, and 4th round every stroke matters to win. I think it's a good sign for Speith that he back door moved into the top 10. He needs to score low and do it a lot more, and he will start doing it more often again. It's all a process, and not an easy one for him. Good luck YJS.

Don't want to stress the obvious but being in contention and feeling the pressure going in the leader flights on Sunday is very different than being 25th and going on a birdie spree to backdoor a 66 and 9th place finish. Can't believe I have to make these points on a golf forum.

I gave you the top 10 fake out move for last week; that’s all I got for JS. Road gets tougher from here through Augusta.

I have never been much of a JS fan, but I am a realist and my prediction is that one more year of getting it back together on the new swing will be enough and he will be back in the winner circle. Possibly a late win this season, but more likely next season. Not to get too excited as I would not be putting any money on another major in his career unless you are giving me 50-1 or more!

Given the fact that Spieth went through a period where everything he touched seemed to turn to gold, this has been quite a plummet down the rankings. Golf is cyclical though and he's too talented not to regain his form eventually.

I do think a new approach is in order though. I appreciate he's been with Cameron McCormick for a while now, but sometimes you just need a fresh perspective on things. A new coach that can sort out his two-way miss and work on some new feels could make the difference.

I disagree. You need to stay the course. You have to remember how well it worked at one time and try to reset to that. Switching will just further exacerbate the issue IMO.

I don't think switching has help near as many as it has destroyed.

I like JS and hope he can get back to doing well. I know it's been stated plenty, but he has to get out of his own head. I hate to see him cry and moan about every single shot. Always something wrong with the flight, the wind, the lie etc... He needs to get back to hit the ball and go hit it again and quit over analyzing everything.

People can say what they want about Spieth but until he sorts his long game out, big time, he wont be doing anything in tournaments, a top 10 is a good result

Can't be average length off the tee and only hit 50% of fairways, and from what i seen at the Genesis its not as if hes missing by only a foot or 2 either.

It has to be really hard mentally to "fall from grace" and experience it every single week. Not only does he know he's not playing well, but he now goes from event-to-event with almost no gallery, nobody wanting to interview him, no real attention, no TV time, nobody cares. In fact, the only TV time he does get is usually when he hits a terrible shot. Talk about constant reminders of how crappy you're doing. It has to be embarrassing at some point. They just popped him on TV at the WGC event to show him hit it 50y right into the water on a Par 3.

Think about being on top of the golfing world, and now you look over at your peers like Rory, Brooks, JT, etc. who you used to beat quite a lot, and now you feel "less than" compared to them. His entire golfing world is flipped upside down. I imagine that has to really weigh on him.

How long should you continue going down a swing change path without seeing improvement, before you stop or make a turn to a different direction?

Before he hits a shot he does a number of nervous looking waggles. I'm speculating, but I have done that before and it was because I had a bunch of swing thoughts in my head and I had to get them in order before I could pull the trigger.

Ideally, things should be simplified so you only have 1-2 swing thoughts. In my opinion.

Maybe with more practice reps he can get the thoughts/changes ingrained so he no longer has to consciously think about them.

But, maybe he and McCormick are working on the wrong things and over complicating everything.

It's true, moving to a new coach is no guarantee of anything and often fails. Luke Donald is one that springs to mind though there are hundreds of other examples.

That said, there also comes a point where "staying the course" is clearly futile as well and any change would be better than the status quo. Surely Spieth has reached that point?
