SIM Drivers: Can only hit cuts and can't close the face!

this is me currently 100%... I had the m5 last year and it was as close to automatic as any club ive ever had. By far the best driver ive played. I dunno what it is but with both SIM models ive hit more fades/push fades that ever. Im living on the heel currently with the SIM Max

I had 2 awesome back to back simulator sessions that made me trade in the m5 for the SIM Max and its been awful for me ever since. The 8 - 10 times on the range ive had maybe 2 good driving days, the rest I start right and go farther right. Only 2 rounds on course so far and ive hit way under 50% of fairways so far. im lucky the trees are still dead on the right side so Im not losing my ball through the leaves

In my testing on course

SIM - Two way miss, not good, bias? no idea, can't make it work

SIM MAX - Very consistent, low spin, slight fade bias, best TM driver to date.

This thread is comical.

Ton of people based their fade-biased on launch monitor results.

If I had done the same, I never would have ended up in SIM. Tested the 9*, the 10.5* Max and 10.5* SIM. I couldn’t turn over either of the 9* heads but as soon as I had more loft I was just hitting high draws, with no moving the weight track.

On-course testing as well produced a high draw, which I haven’t hit for years, and paired with an Accra TZ5 I get stability and low spin.

I know, I know, to each is own, but this head for some reason reacts differently to shafts vs any other head I’ve tested.

Hzrdus Smoke Green hands down was the stock winner, with the weight moved towards the heel about 3-5mm.

I think if you’re having trouble with either head, don’t be afraid to try the 10.5 head and move the ball a bit back in your stance. I’ve played a fade for 4 years even when I was testing the TZ5 with the TS2 and G400 Max, and now without even moving the weights I was getting draws.

In fairness though, the stock lie is 56* which is quite flat. TS3 for instance is 58.5 stock. You can either go straight up to 60* without manipulating the face or if you need anything in between you either need to open or close the face which isn't the most ideal. It is something that hopefully all good fitters would be taking into account. It is also very odd that the stock off the shelf offering is 56* lie when most hacks are slicers of the ball. Moreover, almost all tour issue heads that you see are 59* +/- half a degree. Pros tend to fight a left miss yet most of the heads are more upright than stock.

Just played my first round with. I was hitting 5 yard Low spin cuts all day. Nirvana. Love my 9 degree sim. I didn’t like the 10.5 head as it did draw on me. I for one like the flatter lie angle. And yes the Hzrdus green shaft is legit. Now to figure out a matching fairway wood shaft that feels similar with slightly higher launch. The guys at true temper recommended the hzrdus black. Not the smoke.

i haven’t hit the SIM but I had the exact same proble, with the M5 and I tried various shafts and flexes. I’ve had so many wild right misses that I don’t get with the M1, M2, G400, G410, and TS3. Needless to say but no more TM drivers for me and I’ve always been a TM guy.

Decided its time to move on from the SIM Max and go with the Mizuno ST200G....the day I was hitting them head to head I actually preferred the Mizuno in about every aspect. But since ive always played TM, I had 4 aftermarket shafts with TM tips already plus the 150% trade in value so I went with the SIM

Ive played exclusively TM drivers ( 8 different ones over the last 16 years ) and this is the first TM driver I couldn't make work for me. I know simulators and monitors aren't the best to base decisions off of, especially since out on the course and range ive been awful with this, but indoor monitors the SIM Max has given me the best ball speeds and distance ive ever had over the last 5 years of drivers ive tried

Partially explains why I love my SIM Max 10.5. I got it and tried setting the loft "lower", but that just opened the face and I was missing a lot of shots right. I moved it back to standard and I've missed 2 FW's in my past 2 rounds of golf and they were small misses. This thing is great.

Out of curiosity, how far to the heel are some of you moving the weight? A buddy of mine who has played some mini tour events loves to hit a draw, and he was having the same issues. He moved his weight almost all the way to the heel, and his normal draw ball flight returned. His currently using the Hzrdus Green 6.5 70g in a 9* head, and it's a high flat ball flight that's quite a bit longer than his PING G410 LST. I almost hit it as far as he did with his G410, and not I'm not even close to him distance wise with his SIM.

I'm actually, gladly, getting the opposite. Coming from a M6 D-Type with Atmos Black, I was hitting "power fades". With the SiM Max with Ventus with Velcore, I'm actually hitting baby draws...and I welcome it! It's strange. I'm not sure its the driver, the shaft, me, of combination of the three but I like this new shot shape and I'm hitting more fairways with a bit more distance. Sad that I won't be able to play for a while to increase the sample size since all the courses in the LA area have been closed because of the Corona thing.

I have only played 3 rounds with SIM but have had no issues moving the ball in either direction. Mine is set at STD with weight in the middle. If I miss it is a small miss.

Had a couple big misses left (lefty) in my last few rounds playing at 1 notch higher to close the face so I went to the standard upright setting as I was hitting it too high before and had my best driving round today. There was a couple swings that I instantly thought oh boy it’s going left and it was dead straight or a 5 yard cut.

Just a thought they may help it plays 45.75” at d5 with green shaft if you cut half inch off it plays at d2. much better results

While I haven’t fully tested the SIM I did order a Mavrik SZ and I’m having the same issue of a right miss. Just can’t get the club face closed. Put the same shaft in it that I had in my Flash SZ which I had in the most fade biased setting because my miss with it was hard left. Even on my great swings where I feel like I square the face, it still falls off to the right about 10 yards. It’s just completely eliminated the left side of the course. It’s taken some adjustment to the new ball flight because my aim points are different and having to adjust to aim left after aiming right of the target for a long time. Just really want to eliminate the hard right miss.

  • 2 weeks later...

Im starting to fight the rights now and I mean the next hole fairway right. Originally I had it set to 2 clicks down and in the upright. So I turned it back to std loft and it was slightly better. However, now I'm launching it too high. I think I might have to go to a 9* SIM and turn it 1 click up to close the face and then swap out the Ventus for a pro 2.0 I have sitting around. Now the honeymoon phase is over, I cant seem to get it dialed in. Either it launches too high with 1.8k spin or it launches perfectly but spin drops below 1.5k. With the ventus my spins were below 2k.
